Bought the game because I was interested in the concept of card games that play like arcade fighters. Took about a dozen matches to acclimate to the game, for it to stop feeling arbitrary and start feeling like a real fighting game. The only other game in the genre I've played is Combo Fighter. While an approachable and well-made game, Yomi 2 exceeds Combo Fighter in every respect except, imo, art. Yomi 2's art is not quite distracting (with the exception of my current main, Persephone), but it isn't why I'm playing. Gameplay is wonderful, with enough decisions to make and variables to weigh so as to be engaging but not overwhelming. I especially love the swap feature, where you can swap a basic card from your hand for one in your discard, in full view of the opponent, for better or worse. I've only scratched the surface, but all the characters feel very different to play and are interesting. While the gem system (customizing feature that adds one of many sets of five extra cards to your character's deck) was a little overwhelming at first, it's grown on me and I now find it to be the perfect amount of customization. I've been mostly playing against robots and I find even this fun and satisfying, trying to figure out both the character and the robot's programming. I've played once so far with an irl friend using the play and pass feature. She found the tutorial tedious and too restrictive (I agree, I probably should have taught her myself by talking through matches with robots), but she really took to the game after finishing it and enjoyed playing against me. My friend is not a videogamer and does not have steam, and so I am a little sad, especially for how well suited Yomi 2 is to correspondence play, that it is not available on mobile or browser, but I understand resources are limited. All in all, very fun and engaging game; scratches my itch for card and(!) fighting games. I look forward to introducing it to more of my friends and I will probably be getting the physical version when it releases, if I can get enough people hooked.
Great Game with a depth you would not expect after the first few plays.

It took me a little while to grasp the rules and get the hang of it, but when it all 'clicked', I just got so into this game! It is brilliant, and somehow really captures the feel of a fighting game in turn based card form. I'm actually blown away by how much depth there is to this game: in terms of fighting game mechanics there's card interactions to represent spacing, knock down meaty attacks, punishes, combos, mix ups and super moves. Aside from the fighting game mechanics there's the layer of card game mechanics like knowing your opponent hand size, checking what is in their discard pile and using all the information you can to guess what they will do and more importantly, get that counter play in! Also, the "async" mode is nothing short of genius as it lets me play friends who have relocated to other parts of the world and have busy lives. How it works is that you take a turn, and your opponent has up to 72 hours to respond. You get a notification to the e-mail you signed up with, take a few minutes to take your turn, and pass play back to them. I like to check in over a morning coffee or sometimes after work. It's a brilliant and I wish more games had this. I'd recommend this to anyone who is remotely curious, I've even introduced it to friends who aren't even into fighting games and they enjoy it!
In order to appreciate Yomi 2, you need to have at least a PHD. You see, Yomi is a game made up of layers. In a fictional universe there is a fighting tournament. This exists only on a narrative level. The fictional tournament games exist within an arcade-style videogame in the vein of Street Fighter. However, this videogame is also a fiction. The real game, is actually a card game, representing the videogame, of the fictional martial arts tournament games. This is a real world card tabletop card game which exists independently of steam. However, we're not playing that here on steam, we're playing a videogame representation of that tabletop card game. Within the videogame representation of the tabletop card game, we have a fictional world, where Yomi 2 is a worldwide phenomenon and an esport played by all strata of society, from local card shops to televised matches. So there is a fictional Yomi 2 tabletop card game representing the real Yomi 2 card game, within the Yomi 2 videogame. This fictional yomi 2 tabletop game also has tournament games, wherein the fictional yomi 2 tabletop game representing the real yomi 2 tabletop game is competed in. So to summarize: we have a fictional fighting tournament game inside a fictional arcade game inside a real tabletop card game inside a fictional tabletop card game inside a fictional tournament inside a real videogame. And there are real world yomi 2 tournaments where real players play the videogame competitively. And we have all this in steam, which, as a platform, gameifies game ownership. So essentially, Yomi 2 is the single most abstracted representation of the concept of martial arts, which ever existed, layering reality upon fiction like a cake. Also it's pretty good, so check it out.
Yomi and fantasy strike are really something special. If you like fighting games and card games this is a no brainer, There are no chase cards, its a fighting game played with cards. Choose your fighter and outsmart your opponent.
An excellent adaptation that perfectly captures the feel of fighters and converts it into tabletop form. The campaign mode does get a bit grindy, but for solo players this is THE Yomi 2 experience. Full video review: https://youtu.be/GBzNq563UUU
