Target Audience: Puzzle Fans Summary: XOB definitely is one of those games that look more trippy then smart design on the surface, but that would be a false assumption to make. Under the psychedelic layer of the visuals is a smartly designed puzzler which doesn't require brute force or quick decisions, but taking a step back, working out your path, and trying to use your brain to determine the right path. I know that sounds like something a puzzle game should do no matter what, but it's the way that XOB rewards actually stopping and thinking about things that puts it on another level then several of its counterparts. The game's good pace of introducing new mechanics, coupled with the ability to jump around at times helps keep you going and the price is right for the number of puzzles you get. Granted, this also most certainly works for the mobile version as well and maybe people will prefer it on that platform, but it's also refreshing that the puzzle design oozes out those satisifcation moments where you overcome a puzzle that was giving you problems. Funny enough, some of the psychedlic nature of the game coupled with the random words and phrases surprisingly works for the gameplay as well. Again, it's a thinking game, and coming across the game mentioning sex and health at times while you're thinking can end up triggering thoughts and inner discussions within you. It never gets in the way of the puzzles mind you: they are definitely a side focus, but it's more so how it triggers in interesting ways, especially if you're the type of person who talks to himself outloud. It's a solid puzzler that will feed the itch of any puzzle fan, in a nice package and a nice price. You really can't ask for more then that. Gameplay Footage: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/808944209 Lists: Positives:

The focus on puzzle design shines through as each of the levels are design smartly but not overly complicated.
You will get that satisfaction rush when you complete a level you struggled on, which is vastly important for a puzzle game.
Game introduces new mechanics at a good pace without feeling like it's rushing through things.
Game doesn't apologize or overly help the player: it knows that the player can get through it if they think about it.
The secondary themes with word usage and colors helps thoughts and imagery come into your head in interesting ways WITHOUT distracting from the gameplay.
Does have a soothing effect with the color/presentation.
Great sound design for movement/turns and is something that never gets old hearing.
Colorblind modes for those who need it, which is really nice to see.
Negatives:

Sometimes it takes a little bit to understand some of the color/functionality ideas, especially in the menu usage, which can lead to confusion.
Small bugs here and there. No game breaking annoying bugs, but more so little trips that get in your way.
Once in a while flicking the mouse can feel like it's a little too sensitive, but that may also be me coming up with excuses for myself. This game is kind of mean. To be fair, I am kind of dense. It's a puzzle game in which you move a little box around by tilting the screen. Gravity applies - try to avoid flying off into the void, it probably doesn't have the same pretty rainbow colours as the levels. The concept is fairly simple, but there are 100 stages and every once in a while a new mechanic is introduced. You reach the 20s (it counts backwards from 100) and suddenly
there's portals
. Every new addition is explained in its own short level which could be considered a tutorial, but after that you just have to figure it out. XOB is quite colourful and while I like the visuals, due to to the colours also changing - when you fly off into the void, for instance - it is sometimes a bit difficult to see, but most of the time it's fine. The music is calm and relaxing, and while the game does work well on PC I've actually been playing more of the mobile version so I can flip my phone upside down and go "Huh?" from a different perspective. (Hence the low playtime on Steam.) Some levels took me way longer than I like to admit, others were surprisingly easy and quick to solve. Even though I got frustrated at times I never felt like quitting; it's quite engaging and can be played in short bursts anyway. There are words also but I am not good with words so I'm unsure whether the game is giving me life lessons or hitting on me. Possibly both.
What on the surface may seem like a trippy yet simple 2D puzzler, ends up being a lot more thoughtful and complex as you dig into its core. The game's base mechanic of rotating the block and manipulating gravity feels both familiar but unique at the same time. The sound effects and visuals are very satisfying, mixed with spacey ambient music that you can listen to for long periods of play time. I'm by no means a puzzle-game expert, but I do really enjoy the ones that click with me -- and this one clicked with me. It felt just complex enough to be challenging, but not to the point that it felt overly-frustrating. When you solve a puzzle you feel a sense of satisfaction, not "finally it's over". That isn't to say it doesn't get more difficult as it goes on, slowly adding more mechanics to keep the gameplay fresh and tricky. The only "negatives" I can really think of for this game are based on preference. There isn't a story here, or any characters to get attached to, this is a "pure" puzzle game. Though there are some bits of poetry and prose to keep you busy as you progress. It took me about 3 hrs to finish half the puzzles in the game (of which there's 100), and they've only taken longer to solve as I continue. It's safe to say I still have plenty of time ahead of me for this game. I think that this game is well worth the price, and a great debut for this developer. I recommend it!
