How is this game getting so many positive reviews?
The screenshots and trailer look way better than the actual game. Sure the graphics and lighting can look nice but the game is not good. This has to be the most linear game of all time lol. Bad, boring levels with the same enemies with meh AI. You can just run past them a lot of the time. You can beat the game in 20 minutes or less. I was going to complain that you can't save but like I said, you can beat the game fast and there's not even an ending...yeah this might as well be early access. I'm leaving this review cause someone has to leave a somewhat realistic review within all these overly positive ones I think people wanna like this game cause it looks like a budget half life and is cheap, but I don't think it'd be worth playing to most people. If the screenshots peaked your interest like me, you'll unfortunately be disappointed
Check Out My Video Review!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok015fJP2oo
This game is absolute trash. I played now about 30 minutes. The only 2 guns i've seen so far is the pistol and the shotgun. The question that i have is, are there only 2 guns? This game plays like soem one had enough money to buy HQ assets but had no idea how to make a game lol
TL;DR
5/10: Totally meh-worthy, but the player gets what they pay for, which is more than can be said for a lot of games on Steam. (Note: This section was added after a libelous SOB called out this author for writing a positive review... A lying SOB who's reviews are even shorter than this TL;DR section!)
Overview
A first-person shooter with unlimited continues and fully regenerating health? This is a game even an FPS n00b like ol' Il Pallino managed to play to completion! Without any sort of backstory, the player wakes up in an apartment and takes a train into town. Once in town, the main character arrives at a warehouse full of shipping containers guarded by a hostile shotgun-armed soldier who the player will kill with either a pistol or their bare hands, and eventually makes it to some extra ammunition and a shotgun. (It's to be assumed that the player took the shotgun from the dead soldier originally encountered.) The player fights their way through six levels of various settings with the last two settings being in rural areas differentiated by the amount of daylight, and once the player (easily) makes it to the end, that's all folks!
Graphics and Sound
This author is unable to render an accurate judgment due to playing Escape the City with the graphics on the minimum setting. What can be said was that the graphics came out more pleasing that what ol' il Pallino was expecting for the lowest setting. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2260956265 The sound is pretty much limited to pistol and shotgun fire. (There is a heavy machinegun available in the training mode, but no machineguns of any variety are encountered in the campaign at the time of writing this review.) It would have been nice to at least have screams of enemy soldiers getting shot.
Positives
Despite the negatives (see below), Escape the City is good fun despite lacking an imperceptible quality. Whatever that quality is, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and other top notch FPS games have this quality in abundance. Even without a discount, Escape The City represents value for the money, which may be be the reason why the developer forbade pre-release reviews to this game... The reader knows enough people o Steam who like FPS games, so this game is one more gift to give out for birthdays and holidays.
Negatives
The biggest negative to Escape the City has to be the lack of enemies. The only person and thing the player will find themselves shooting at (or strangling at point-blank range) is identical soldiers who are almost always armed with shotguns. (A soldier armed with a pistol was once encountered in either the penultimate or final level of the game.) While enemies are normally armed with one weapon, the player will only ever find themselves using a pistol or a shotgun in addition to their hands. Aren't chainsaws and rocket launchers half the fun of FPS games?
Conclusion
The reader most likely has a friend on Steam who loves FPS games and can be gifted this game for their birthday or during Steam's Winter Event. Given the non-sequitor nature of Escape the City, why would someone (presumably a civilian) react to an invasion of foreign soldiers by taking what appears to be an intracity train and then do their best impersonation of Rambo when it seems more prudent to hide? Certainly after escaping the city, the main character is most likely just running to another city taken over by soldiers from the same army. (Is it that hard to make an ending involving a pretty girlfriend or adoring family?)
The honest word of Il Pallino... I literally can't call this a game without laughing. This is one of the worst games ever. Endless bots spam with shotguns at you, and your pistol does nothing. You run out of ammo and end up dying again and again after attempting to kill hoards of bots with melee attacks that almost never work. The positive reviews for this game are trolls and bots. DONT BUY THIS!
Somewhat generic shooter - but at a nice price. The shotgun is confetti and pistol is good for snipers, grenades are OP and you can refill at any ammo crate - but it's definitely fun to run through. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBXdvvLm_1U
Overall, the game is not bad, so I would give it an 8/10 for its value for money in terms of the experience it provides. It's definitely a purchase that won't disappoint you!
I got this game from a friend. We are not friends anymore. This game is ass. 0/10 would play battleborn instead.
Awesome game! I would increase the rotation movement speed a bit :D
