Xenoform
A slick and addictive little retro space flight combat simulator, Xenoform has you scouring the ravaged landscape of a low-poly retrofuture alien planet in your scrappy little VTOL fighter jet and beating back the waves of cosmic invaders. The story of a recently terraformed planet and the impending alien onslaught that threatens it is told through the letters of our protagonist pilot to his family back on Earth, as the player takes his role and struggles on the road to becoming a fierce intergalactic fighter pilot.
Gameplay
Xenoform has some float-y and seemingly cumbersome form of realistic hover tank controls, they're easy enough to learn all being done with the use of the mouse but take awhile to really master. Your ship doesn't simply propel forward with the press of the button, but instead has the player tilting at specific angles to push your trajectory in the right direction. Aiming and shooting while dealing with these demanding controls is half the battle, having the player strike a skillful balance between careful navigation and drifting through the air to focus on getting those shots in. Each level is a little bite-sized open world stage of alien destruction. Extraterrestrial pods and other strange anomalies shoot into the surrounding islands from the sky, systematically planting into the ground to cause havoc. Mostly harmless seedlings first appear and corrupt the land with small non-aggressive hoppers to locate and dispatch, then come the SAM missile pods who will lock on and fire missiles at you if you veer to close. Soon enough bombers appear to cover the areas you're clearing with a blanket of bombs, and fighters zoom in to engage in small aerial dog-fights with you for air-supremacy. You're ultimately free to explore and fly about each island stage and dispatch enemies as you please, but given the range of threat levels between enemies its often smarter to take out the most aggressive attackers first. The progression has a nice and balanced difficulty curve to it where your ship grows in power and ability alongside the strengthening alien forces that multiply with every new stage. Starting with the smaller advancements like larger ammo and fuel capacities for longer trips into the world, and working your way up to higher rates of fire and even new destructive toys like missiles to increase the capacity of. Every little addition makes each trip feel more intense and involving than the last. The only real gripe I have with this is the lack of an initial challenge, outside of coming to terms with your finicky VTOL's controls. There's tons of really cool alien life to see, locate, and shoot at but a lot of it doesn't ever really seem to fight back until much later into the levels. I'd love to see some more complex dog-fighting here and missions beyond just hunting and killing every last alien on the map, but the intricate controls and different new alien anomalies to encounter and kill make the entire trip more than worth it overall.
Visuals/Sound
The lo-fi little neon colored voxel planet each level takes place on is reminiscent of a Darwinia sort of polygonal cosmic world. Low-poly landscapes of cosmic color stretch out beneath your hovering VTOL, thick with trees, mountains, lakes, and general lush scenes of otherworldly nature. Everything is animated quite fluidly and has a slick modern feel, while retaining a very retro sci-fi flavor to it's overall atmosphere.
Final Thought
Xenofrom is a game that pays homage to the mysterious and cryptic worlds of vintage computer gaming, the type of games on C64 that felt very free-form and never held your hand any of the way through forcing the player to feel it out for themselves. Though the pacing of the game does linger a bit for the beginning half of the game, it still manages to engage players with its unconventional piloting mechanics that demand full attention and maybe even a bit of practice.

Excellent retro style shooter, reminding legendary Commodore/Atari/Sinclair game 'Virus' (especially fighter control scheme). Simple, well balanced, slightly addictive. Ideal for casual relax.
Great homage to Lander and Virus.
THIS GAME SUCKS. There is NO OBVIOUS way of how to make your ship move FORWARD. The ONLY "Thruster" is upward which is located on the bottom of the ship. There is NO possible way to GO ... ANYWHERE, without TILTING the ship and using the AWKWARD BOTTOM Thruster to "go upward" while yawing a given way..... And not even to mention the controls (the key maps, mouse, and gamepad) are WOEFULLY LACKING and are NOT easily discerned as to what does what. NOT EVEN THE BASIC "tutorial"-like SIMULATOR HELPS PEOPLE LEARN HOW TO FLY!!!!!!!!!! Also all of the landscape is STUPIDLY PIXELATED. HOW do you GET AWAY with releasing this HORRIBLE CLUNKY GARBAGE??? This game FEELS like GARBAGE!!! I wish i had known better what i was getting into BEFORE i paid real money for this nonsense.
Very very very bad controls.
