"Gimme a game, with extra DLCs!" "Alright, extra DLCs..." "But hold the gameplay progression." "Hold the gameplay progression..?" "And hold the story." "Hold the story?? HEY JIMMY, GIMME A GAME WITH NOTHIN!" "Nuthin?"
This game was awesome up until a year ago. I sunk endless hours into this version and the mobile version. Sadly, the devs have pretty much abandoned the game and it doesn't work anymore. If you're reading this after 2025, don't buy this. It's broken.
Play Donut County instead, it offers a very similar gameplay experience, but with added story, characters, and a completion experience that isn't grindy as hell.
After purchasing this game I learned that all of the .io games use bots instead of actual multiplayer. If you just want to waste time, this is an ok game. If you were expecting multiplayer to actually work instead of playing against bots, then pass on this one. There is no real competition here, you can't even change your nickname. The Multiplayer option is permanently greyed out in the options.
You can't change your name or even effectively level up. Very few settings can be changed and now it shows multiplayer as disabled. Levels are very short and repetitive as well.
Originally a mobile game, much better on pc, no pop up ads like the mobile version. But please devs, we NEED online multiplayer mode. Also, kinda sucks having to buy DLCs to complete achievements. Overall 4/10
让人“眼熟”的游戏——原来广告里的那些都是真实的 不过游戏内容过于单调,初玩时也许有些新意,但玩了几盘后就觉得没有的内容了
In Hole io, you play as a hole in the ground that eats objects to get bigger. This seems to be the same as the mobile version of this game. This game is often compared with Donut County: both have the same general concept, but whereas Donut County offers more depth, story, polish, and shows more effort put into it, Hole io provides far more replay value. There are 6 levels in the base game and currently 9 DLCs. Only 1 level is initially accessible, and you have to use in-game currency (coins) to unlock the other 5. For the main campaign, you play in a 2 minute round against CPU-controlled players. The more objects you eat, the bigger the hole grows, and the higher your score gets. Each round has an optional objective which involves eating a certain item(s), providing some variety. I agree with a lot of the pros and cons by reviewer Kate_Love: PROS:

Easy, casual game to understand and play
2 minutes per round makes this game ideal if you want to pick it up and play for just a few minutes
Can be addicting if you're into this type of game
Fair price ($5 for the base game) for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it
Has power-ups and upgrades
Good variety of maps
Funky music
The achievements, while some may be grindy, are doable
Many collectible stickers, which don't have any effect on the gameplay but are nice to look at
Numerous unlockable skins (13 in base game, plus 7-9 per DLC, for a total of 85 currently available)
CONS:

Multiplayer broken: The option is grayed out. I'm not sure how long it hasn't been working, but it seems that it has been unavailable ever since this game was released on Steam based on the reviews.
The controls don't quite seem to be optimized for PC - the hole does not follow your cursor directly, but rather an area AROUND your cursor. It's very hard to explain, but this will be immediately noticeable when you play your first round. You will have to recenter the area around the cursor multiple times each round. It'll take some time to get used to this game's handling if you play with a mouse. You can also use your keyboard, but that method is less precise and more clunky.
Currently only 2 gameplay modes available: classic and endless hole (I'm not including multiplayer because it's broken). For comparison, the app version has classic, battle royale, and solo run. holeio.com offers classic, battle royale, teams, solo run, and monsters attack. The inclusion of a larger variety of gameplay modes that could be unlocked with coins or by progressing in classic mode would be a great addition to the game.
No respawn when you die: If you're making good progress on an objective but you die, the round's over. On the other hand, the bots are able to respawn with no problem.
No restart: If you get an objective that you don't want to complete, there is no option to restart the level; you can only return to the main menu.
No scoreboard/leaderboard: This game does not save your high scores, which would have been nice to record your progress/skill and a great incentive for continued play.
Dumb computer AI: The bots will ignore you and only aim to eat items, generally posing little threat to you once you get past the first 30 seconds of the game. Occasionally, they will get stuck while trying to eat an item that is too large for them and they will remain in place while spinning rapidly. I have also had bots run right into me and die while I was standing still. The vast majority of the time, you will most likely get first place in every round.
Some of the bots start out as a bigger size than you, even if you have maxed out the size power-up. This can offer some challenge and variety, but on the other hand, it can make completing objectives more difficult.
Some of the objectives are very difficult to complete or broken (it won't register if you eat the required objects)
Huge reward amount difference between ranking and objective completion. If you complete an objective, you get 600 coins, compared to if you place 1st (50 coins), 2nd (25), or 3rd (10).
Unable to change your display name from "PLAYER". On the other hand, the bots have some pretty creative and interesting display names.
Endless mode isn't very interesting and slows down drastically after level 15.
If you like the gameplay loop of "hole eats thing -> hole gets bigger" and are looking for a casual game where you can turn your brain off, then you'll find enjoyment here. If the lack of multiplayer isn't a deal-breaker for you, then this game is worth buying either at full price ($5) or a sale, even considering its flaws. The DLCs are $2 per map ($18 total for all 9), which is definitely not worth purchasing at full price, so wait for a sale before purchasing them as a bundle.

It is incredible how bad this game is, without even talking about the grindy achievements, some of which don't even unlock
