Classic turn based game with resource managements.
The game sucks on newer hardware. I can't even use grenades in EW bc the game just crashes, every, single, time.
Very fun tactics game. I like the atmosphere and music, and it’s very easy to lose track of time with this one.

my review is positive on the condition you play on normal, soldiers panicking constantly made classic difficulty unplayable for me and would not recommend on classic. normal is very fun though

The best compliment I can pay this game is I happily restarted it four times before ever beating the campaign. This was my first real dive into the tactical turn based genre so I really didn't know what I was doing and kept screwing up. This game is so fun and so addictive so I was fine starting over until I felt comfortable with the games systems. Perhaps the game is poorly tutorialized but I think that really falls on me and no tutorial can really compare to just playing the game until you just teach yourself through exposure. While I was playing this I also started a couple fire emblem games (shadow dragon and six) and I came to the conclusion xcom really does this genre a lot better for two key reasons. Firstly the gameplay and specifically the levels and terrain systems are just way deeper and more complex than what fire emblem was doing. I get those games are older and on handheld systems but still as gameplay experiences theres just so much more to sink your teeth into and it stays interesting for the games whole duration. Secondly is story priority xcom wisely keeps the story light and out of the way. The premise is all thats really needed for player motivation and the permadeath and elements of chance within missions creates stories far more compelling than heaps of dialogue and cutscenes ever could. Fire emblem is chock full of dry and long winded visual novel conversations that kill the pacing and never provide the stakes present within the missions themselves. Seeing your soldiers grow mission by mission going from poorly armored rookies with terrible aim to plasma wielding super soldiers creates attachment to characters effortlessly and shows the importance of gameplay prioritization and how its creates real emotion without any need for traditional characterization. Surprisingly I ended up liking the base management stuff more than i expected. Its not the most in depth thing but it requires enough thought and progresses so nicely that the out of mission experience wasnt a drag. Your monthly budget is almost never enough to cover all the upgrades and additions you want so theres always a decent amount of compelling choices to make even in your base. The ufo fights are a real sore spot though, its pretty brainless and theres no choices to make besides make sure you linearly progress forward in the upgrade tree. The soldier equipment kind of had a similar problem in that progression is as simple as buy and and equip the gear with bigger numbers. Making kinetic and energy weapons more effective against certain enemy types would be a simple change that would keep older gear meaningful instead of just something you eventually throw away. The expansion enemy within was not at all what i expected. It functions as more of a pretty in depth new game plus where its the exact same campaign with many new gear options, a second faction, and new map and mission types. You could just play enemy within and not miss anything but it throws a lot more at you much quicker so the base game served an important role as a long introduction to the game and all your experience makes the expansion a lot smoother to play. Part of the dlcs are a wider variety of cosmetic options and while having no gameplay effect at all theming and dressing up your soldiers was lowkey one of my favorite parts of the game and gets you even more attached to the little guys. This game certainly has tons of replayability but I definitely gotta play the others first. Its a phenomenal game i'd recommend to just about anyone and goes to show just how good turn based combat can be and how valuable it is to have no barrier between gameplay and story. It ran surprisingly well for a 14 year old pc game but there will be some jank and bugs so just make sure to save before and after every mission.
English version (French below) Honestly a very good game. Gameplay is very smooth, you have a lot to manage, especially in the beginning, between soldiers, research projects, plane, weapons, armors... but honestly it's a very fun challenge and doesn't feel overwhelming, and seeing your soldiers snowball in the end is very satisfying The only real problem I had with this game was that in a lot of fields, it lacks its own identity if that makes sense. It doesn't have memorable character because story is very much not the central point and the ost, even if it's good, kind of seem like "generic action theme 101". Other than the designs for the aliens and the gameplay, there's nothing that makes you go "Oh yeah, that is obviously X-COM", which is a shame Other than that, maybe a few tweaks with moving flying units but that's not that big of a deal. If you like strategic games, try it out, it is very good Have not really tried the platinum though, but it looks very grindy / hard for those interested Version Française : Franchement un très bon jeu.
liked it in 2016, liked it again in 2026. Next run in 2036.
