Prices
Each in the currency that store quoted — not converted: the gap between two rows is the publisher's pricing, not an exchange rate.
14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
Availability
We put this game to every storefront we collect. A market that answered not sold has told us something about the game; a market we never asked has not, and the two are never drawn the same.
Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 3.43/day in the week to Aug 14 → 4.29/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

one of the greatest games of all time and it still holds up that way. if you like tactical combat that rewards careful planning and execution, this is your game. if you don't understand math and hate RNG, you might wanna skip it

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 8: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown —

Steam is demanding that I review this fourteen year old game. Alright, here's my review. XCOM Enemy Unknown and it's DLC Enemy Within AREN'T even close to the original X-COM. However, if you do buy it and want to get close to the original, install the Long War mod. Also, don't bother with the multi-player aspect, it was a waste of time even when the game was new and it's no-longer working at this point anyway. Now, to break it down. If you want it, buy it on sale if it's sub $5.00 or even $2.50. Install the Long War mod. It'll be about as close as you can get to the original X-COM. As to the DLC's, you can usually get the complete pack on sale.
My 3rd-year University project drew heavy inspiration from the XCOM series, but, up until recently, I'd only ever touched the game to check how the grid system worked. Now that I'm finished with University, with a 2:1 (yippee!), I thought it'd be nice to actually give the game a shot. Despite working on a TBS/RTS for over a year straight, I'm historically not their biggest fan. My only true exposure to them is Halo Wars. This meant I had a huge learning curve ahead of me, but again, I was willing to give it a shot. And I'm glad I stuck with it! As expected, the learning curve was steep. Managing even a small number of units proved a challenge. Dealing with the horrible RNG system was an even bigger one. But after a few missions, a few deaths, I started to get the hang of it. That's when I finally began to understand why people spend 100s, even 1000s, of hours in this genre. It's addictive. I didn't do everything there was to do, but I did reach the end, and considering how tough a time I was having at the start, I'm proud of that.
Delicious Vanilla
TL;DR: The cornerstone of the modern tactical RPG genre, this game is a little simple, but more than rewarding enough to justify exploring.

Sometimes a game is so fundamental to the genre it has helped sculpt that an in-depth review isn’t really necessary; it’s not quite required reading, but it would be weird to talk to someone who loves the genre but hasn’t played the keystone title. That’s the case for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. While it’s not even close to being the ur-tactical roleplaying game, it helped establish many elements of what we now take for granted in modern TRPGs. If you love games that have followed in its wake, or are just curious if you might be into this flavor of nerdy sub-genre, it has held up well and presents a terrific (if slightly simple) experience. Earth is under alien attack. Until now individual governments have been keeping it under wraps as best they could, but things have gotten severe enough that they’ve banded together to build an international taskforce to coordinate defensive measures. As the head of XCOM, you’ll start with tiny teams of scientists, engineers, and combat personnel. It will be your responsibility to stretch the funding provided by member nations to grow these teams, analyze the threat we face, and eventually turn the aliens’ technology against them. Said funding is contingent on each country’s satisfaction with the job you’re doing, and how well-protected they feel, so you’ll need to slowly extend your vision and reach with satellites and local response fighters around the globe. It’s a fun, if slightly anodyne setting that provides tension and a satisfying power fantasy as you creep your way from underdog to juggernaut. Missions will see you fielding a growing team of soldiers who individually level up and gain powers from simple skill trees, in addition to other forms of progression. Battles involve a number of different types of objectives that balance the need to carefully uncover the fog of war while also handling things quickly enough to secure resources or protect civilians. One of the best aspects of this game, which it takes directly from the 1994 original, is that even when you haven’t yet found your adversaries, you will hear them stomping around, smashing through windows, and firing weapons, the camera wildly panning to the still-shrouded corner of the map that seems to be the rough source of the sound. On your turn, each trooper can move and carry out one action, with enough distinctions between different classes to keep things interesting. For example, snipers can only fire their rifles on turns when they haven’t moved, meaning you’ll want to hurry them into a nest where they’ll have a useful vantage for several turns to come. Another system to consider on every move is cover; each piece of the terrain will provide anyone behind it with either full or partial protection, making them much more difficult to hit. Since the enemies hold a substantial firepower advantage, this is incredibly important. When a soldier takes more damage than their armor can mitigate, they will be inactive for days or weeks until they heal, during which time they’re ineligible for sorties. If they lose all their hitpoints, they have to be stabilized or they permanently die, and some enemy attacks are so devastating that they can be killed outright. This all leads to you becoming invested in your team, and weighing their safety against tactical necessities. For added drama, you can even edit each soldier’s name and appearance to make your squaddies represent your friends, should you choose. This should come as no surprise at this point in this write-up, but simple as many of these systems are by today’s standards, they come together in such a way as to hit a real sweet spot, and I absolutely loved playing this again after so many years. The Enemy Within expansion seamlessly adds content that isn’t critical, but spices things up a bit and introduces the idea of sacrificing your humanity for strategic gains. Enemy Unknown certainly has shortcomings, such as not having enough mission variety, but none of them should prevent you from trying such a well-honed experience, especially when it and all of its DLC content can be had for ten dollars on sale. Hop in, and if you enjoy your time with it, there are many, many more titles that have experimented further with its recipe that you may also love.
Bought in 2012, finished in 2026. As close to a perfect game as you can get.
