X4 is a very interesting game, fun to just pilot, then you grow into a space empire managing fleets. I like the storylines and ship designs. The ships that got ship interiors are stunning!
Fantastic Game definitely would buy again, hopefully one day they would atleast let us play 2 player coop :(
Great game made even better by hardworking humble devs.
leanring curve is steep but enough YT movies to learn from :)
A great game, if you have al lot of time to put into it. The whole universe getting simulated in the background, is truly something unique in Single-player-games.
I have been gaming since the early 1980's X4 is one the very best space games you can buy. Egosoft are fantastic developers, they really care about their games and the players who enjoy them. I am very much looking forward to X5 :)
TL;DR: I do not recommend X4 if you are impatient to learn complex game systems, are easy to get frustrated when things don't go your way or if you want clear objectives in your video games. The only reason I haven't played more recently (especially after the recent Empire Update) is because I try to go through a little bit of my game backlog. Otherwise I would've played nothing but X4 in the past days. I'm biased towards this gem of a game, hopefully in the best way, because I started out with X2 when Steam was simply a way to play Counter Strike, played that vanilla for a year or two, then another few years with mods. And worst of all, Egosoft is based in my country, so I am extra fond of them, because Germany only has a few really good game studios and I want each and every one of them to succeed in a society where every few years the media will try again with "This violent person has played brutal killer games and thus videogames should be banned!" When I switched to X3, the Albion Prelude expansion was already a thing and I had a blast playing 200something hours of that. X:Rebirth I only know from reviews, because it wasn't quite what I was interested in, but that's alright, I can see how it's a great game for a different type of player than I am. I want to be critical, but nitpicks aside, Egosoft has never let me down. They're basically a blacksmith who has been making it their mission to make the best swords and nothing but swords (with a short-lived dabble in maces) and they've been refining their craft for literal decades. Yes, the UI is a bit clunky, but damn is it better than it used to be in X2 and I honestly am at a point where I don't think it can be improved by a lot anymore because of all the complex systems that one needs to be able to work with at every point in time. X, X2, X3 and X4 are basically a genre for themselves; there's really no game quite like them. I really cannot think of a space game that manages to fuse so elegantly all the elements. It has...

Fighter-scale battles
Capital-scale battles
Real Time Strategy
Grand Strategy
Economy Simulator
Space Exploration (more limited than Elite Dangerous or No Mans Sky, though)
Story and deep lore
Detailed ship customisation
Screenshot Simulator with amazing sound effects and music
Sometimes hilarious voice acting quality (please, I love that very German flair that also games like Gothic have, don't replace that with poop AI voices)
On the one hand, I always welcome competition in a genre. On the other, I don't think there will be competition for Egosoft anytime soon simply for the fact that they have just that big of a head start in making an amazing game in their very specific niche. It'd be like trying to make a true WoW-killer and we all know how many WoW-killers ever made it big.
I bought this game on sale along with most the dlc (just not the 2 unique ship DLCs, i think?) and its honestly got so much depth to it. I've played the likes of elite dangerous, star citizen, and a few other space games, but this one absolutely wins on having the best sandbox, and having the best feeling of interacting with the world. every ship built, every station producing items, every asteroid field, is there for you to find, exploit and use how you wish! After completing the first few quest lines for a terran cadet, i now have a small fleet of combat vessels and I've just set up a simple silicon trading station with my allied terrans. Yet im rapidly realising i still have so much more left to do; build production stations by acquiring blueprints (from different factions too, if i so wish), securing my own sectors, potentially creating my own shipyards, managing relations with other factions and potentially wiping some out, fighting the evil xenon threat that wants to wipe out all life alike, get my research flowing... and even more stuff i probably dont yet realise i can / should do! No other space game lets you build an empire quite like this one, and the level of freedom you have as to how you build your empire, be it piracy, trade, combat etc. makes it such a unique gem! I look forward to playing through my first campaign in full, and then even flipping my start to be with a completely different faction, giving a completely different experience! o7 and thanks for this awesome game Egosoft!
