People moan and groan and nitpick. Idiots, really. This game is not like other X games. I will grant that in full. But it also doesn't make it a bad game and definitely not as terrible as people want you to believe. If you're an economy head that absolutely, positively, MUST have a living, real economy then this is not for you. If you're more of a captain than an admiral and need to be at the helm of every ship you own, this game is not for you. If you can look past these two obvious deviations then beneath that you will find what in my opinion is a great game..and although I will get burned for this I consider it a far more complete game than X4 in its current state. And although the aforementioned deviations from the X series do come with cons, I find they come with just as many pros as well. In this game the universe will not head towards eventual death and stagnation (as in X4) since the economy is generated and not real. I also find myself far more immersed here. There is always something going on pretty much everywhere you go. In this game I do not need to wait six hours for the shipyard to construct my ship because it is running short on engine components (such as in X4). Building ships does take time..but an appropriate amount of time here. If you enjoy space sim style games and can deal with flying a single (highly customizable and upgradeable) ship and don't get bothered by a fake economy then this is an awesome game and a must have to your collection. Just my 2 cents.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

it's flat horrible. If you're looking for a game like this then get X4 Foundations and install the Starwars mod on it and bam...incredible game.
X: Rebirth may seem like a strange departure for the X series, but I argue it is a return to form to fulfill one of Egosoft's founding visions. Since as far back as X: Beyond the Frontier, Egosoft has tried to mix storytelling and complex gameplay, but they've always struggled with delivering on the story front. The stories in the X series often feature strangely translated and VA'd dialogue, out-of-place character motivations, and amateurish cinematic sections. Even so, something profoundly soulful and heartfelt lies at the core of it all. Egosoft wants to tell a story, not just one or two, but a grand story of an entire universe and its various peoples, polities, and monsters. X: Rebirth is yet another chapter in this ever-expanding story, and it is easily the best executed and closest to a "AAA" cinematic campaign (following numerous updates and two major expansions). Despite the even-present Egosoft jank, Rebirth succeeds where its predecessors failed in featuring immersive cinematic sections that actually involve the player character (including a fully VA'd MC, who does a pretty good job, all things considered), with NPCs who have better (albeit, still varied) voice acting talent, and an Alyx-style female companion (who is a bit fan-service-y, but that is easily forgiven when approached with a non-judgmental attitude). Story and immersion content aside, Rebirth offers an even more complex and dynamic fully simulated game universe compared to its predecessors. While not as seamless as its sequel, X4, it does its best to try to appear seamless (which is to say, the way the game handles ship-to-dock and location transitions). To top it all off, it runs like a charm on contemporary hardware (something that X4 is still trying to get right, but it may just be a question of brute-forcing better performance as time passes and real-life tech develops and refines). In summary, I think I love this game, but as a raw sandbox, X4 is still king. I love all of the X games, which are all flawed, but as a story and entry point for new players, X: Rebirth ain't a bad place to start!
the current version of x rebirth at 4.0+ is alot more playable then compare to when i played at launch, i've also tried the game during telade outpost dlc release was able to actually clear the game, with 4.0 home of light dlc the game offer more ways of starting your games. game still has a number of annoying bugs but not game breaking. for the immersion aspect the game does well to the point where its not exactly fun after the 100 hr of experiencing it, so i recommend getting quality of life mods once you experience your first 50 hrs of gameplay. minor spoiler warning (not really anything significant) campaign i recommend going in blind and getting mad initially from some of the annoying game mechanics and elements to learn the game and the various zones, then when you reach the point of the plot where you are require to build a station for the plot to continue. either actively camp station that make fusion core and buy them asap, pirate them from traders ships that you scan, rebuild your rep by camping and defending badland colony, or download some mods that add stations with fusion reactor and reinforcement metal plates to improve early game station building economy or at least make its faster to complete the plot station. the other option is restarting campaign and over establishing yourself after you get your first freighter reward. to make second run at the game alot less rage inducing. alot of the mods are quality of life you should embrace to reduce stress from playing reality sim in this game. annoying pirates bases shouldnt be seen as dangerous, but rather a source of resource once your more establish and have plasma mk3 cannon weapons, auto crew mod, and auto train mod. pirating the pirates factions in this game is a also a great assets in developing your empire or your wallet. rebirth i can understand the devs as suppose to be a spinoff reimagining of the first game back in the 90s so this is no way a sequel for x4, but rather a more accessible and simpler version of the 90s X game for a new demographics. so many if not most core fans will probably have their expectation betrayed by rebirth at launch expecting an x4 from rebirth. but i recommend that if your new to the x series and dont want to slog through all early series game or find x4 way too deep rebirth is pretty accessible for a space simulator. anyway the overall point is this game will have times where you will get mad but as you learn and play the game with mods, will you be able to find some enjoyment in the game. it was for me considering i sink over 400 hrs in this game and at the time of this review im still playing rebirth and building my role playing empire.
TL;DR just buy x4 I gave it my best shot. Doesn't really live up to the X name... Kinda half thought through. Experience with X3, now rolling through X4. If you aren't sure about this one, just skip it and go straight to x4, they have a better implementation of all the cool stuff that was mentionable in this game and it's playable. This game pretty much stripped out the core of being an X game, which is a universe of possibilities. Then they tried to put a ton of fancy things into the game to really bring up the wow factor. It ends up being exactly that. A cored out game with some fun wrapping paper. X4 is like if someone took this game, reinserted the X universe and vision back into it, then improved the wow factor in a way that grows organically with the universe. I was very afraid I'd have to leave the X-games behind after playing this, I gave X4 a shot and I don't regret it.
A deep, beautiful, do anything you want in a spaceship game! Back in 2013 it was a disaster, but they really did work on it for years, and now it is awesome. I have played X 3 for about 30 hours years ago before my computer crashed, and I have had this game for years, but when I finally had a computer powerful enough to run it, X 4 was coming out soon, so I waited on it. Well, X4 needs at least another 6 months, probably a year or more of work, and right now i,n my opinion, it is a mess, so I came back to X rebirth and I'm finally really learning how to play. Its fantastic! Just go on the forums, or to the guides sections, and get the recommended mods, and this game is beautiful, deep, and with a track ir it just feels so real. It is complex, and I recommend a hotas setup, print out a diagram of your hotas, and then in the game, as you map your joystick and throttle, write down what each button does in pencil, because you can easily change things up. Don't worry about just flying one type of ship, the mods have fixed that too, so you can fly capital ships. I say if you are an X fan, or really love space ship games, play this and Evochron Legacy for now, and just wait on X 4 for a bit. Especially getting this on sale for 16.99 is a real steal. I just started, but this game can give 100s of hours of play.
Was unable to complete the campaign because of bugs. The game was updated several times after the failed launch, but even after starting again after the new updates I would reach a new bug that would break the game or prevent me from progressing. I got the point of building my first station but was unable to aquire the materials to build it. Instead of fixing the issues players cared about they continued adding other features. So many hours wasted, all I wanted was to complete the campaign to see how the story ended.
After a lot of patches the game has now it's place amongst the X-Series. It's not quite the like the "newer" X-games (X3, Prelude, X4) and feels kinda more like a hybrid between the first X-game and the sequels. What that means is a more personal approach. You can still do pretty much everything you could dream of in this nearly perfect sandbox, but unless you are useing mods (which i highly recommend), you will be flying only in the Skunk (which means one ship), while beeing accompanied by a permanent crew-mate, which kinda helps breath more human life into the cockpit (but as a long time fan i definitly prefer Betty). But you can still explore and find rare trade-goods, rare quest with unique rewards (due to the nature of the Skunk and it's upgradeing system), you can still pirate, board even the largest ships (and boarding is done realy good), fight massive fleet battle (carriers, destroyes, countless fighters, etc. , all under you command), build your empire by force or trade, build stations whereever you go. X-games are kinda like EvE without the PvP and the online-need. It's a real sandbox, which means you and the A.I both can only use the ressources (and thus ships, weapons, tradegoods etc.) which someone realy produced, mined, etc. . This creates kinda a very very interesting dynamic and addictive gameplay-loop. But that's kinda normal for Egosoft and X. What makes Rebirth kinda stand out is the way the universe was modeled this time around: the level of detail, not just pure technical, but artistic is exceptional. While massive carries make space explode a lonely corporate cop-car will chase some pure sod in backround. While you let your Skunk dock on one of your XL-cap-vessels, some random little train will skirt the outskirts of a gigantic space-station. All this is supported by a still very good looking eninge (in space), and the amazeing soundtrack the series has always been known for. The main campaign is also quite well done and offers some real context not just to mechanics (kinda like a turorial), but also to the world and it's workings. There's a detail some diskliked (a hostile turning faction), but in reality it helps make the scenario believable and the A.I and thus your prospering trade-empire can easily work around it. on the negative side of things: the game brought some good ideas to the table, but went way overboard. the scanning of stations could be a cool feature, but the amount of scanning you would need to do for the perfect result (thankfully you can skip it) is insane and will drive you nuts after your first 2 sectors. the same goes for the way trade-agents are handeled. it's a good feature on face value, but flying to every station, waiting till an NPC speaks some random bleh, then doing an annyoing mini-timing-game and then finaly beeing able to get the npc as a trade-agent...it's insane. there's little diversity to the voice-timing-mini-game and even if there was, due to the amount of trade-agents you will need (one per station..and there are a lot of station) this just doesn't work. thankfully both, the scanning and the trade-agent-system can be made better via mods, which work perfectly and which don't disable achievments (Egosoft probably realizied how insane both system are/were). All in all: now a fantastic space-sim, in one of the best space-sim-franchises....mixed with some uneccessary busy-work (thanks for mods less so).
Would I recommend this game? If you don't compare it to previous x games then yes I definitely would. As a game in it's own right separate from the previous releases I'd say its excellent and enjoyable now that it has had many updates. If you are looking for a newer 'proper' X game then I would suggest buying X4 foundations as in that game you can fly almost any ship where as in rebirth you're stuck to just one ship. So just as a space trading game I would give this a thumbs up.
