Reviews
Disclaimer: while I haven't played for long at the time of reviewing, I feel comfortable writing this review anyway, as in that short time, I believe I've gotten a pretty clear idea of what this game has to offer. As of now, I'm 'not recommending' this game. That may change in the future, depending entirely on whether this game is updated/supported by the devs. I think it has potential, and it's a really cute idea, but it doesn't offer much currently. The price is fair, for how limited the game feels in its current state. So if you're looking for a pretty basic, easy, straightforward experience, you might enjoy this. I would love to see some clarity/transparency from the devs about a few things. Do they plan to continue updating, or is this the finished product as is? Are all assets within the game human-made (if you're unaware, the dev's reddit post history shows multiple instances of generative AI usage, including for early versions of the art for this game)? Currently, you can only own three dog breeds -- do the devs plan to add more overtime? There are also some weird UI/menu things/improvements that could be made. I would also love if the dogs' animations had a little more variety, such as actually 'sitting' when the 'sit' card is used, etc. Still, I do think it's a really cute game, and an even cuter concept, if it's elaborated upon and supported long-term. And again, for the price, it is worth it as long as your expectations are realistic. I will probably continue playing it, at least for a little while. I feel like it might be especially enjoyable if I'm home sick from work or something, and just need a mindless, lighthearted activity.
My daughters LOVE this game. We've been tracking the creator's progress through his newsletters, and they've been asking about the game probably once a month. Now that it's out, they've begun playing and are looking forward to naming their dogs and buying accessories. The graphics are super fun, and the interface is intuitive.
I am having so much fun with this game. it's so cute, and I really enjoy the variation in the competitors. The base building aspect breaks up the gameplay loop a bit, in a good way, and I really enjoy seeing what the pups have to say! This is a cozy, cute roguelike and well worth the price.
In general, I do like the idea of the game. I'm quite a fan of roguelites, so I was looking forward to trying this out. There is certain feedback I can give on how I would like some actions to be more responsive, like the cards being clickable in quicker succession, how I would like the world map to be a bit easier to look at, or how it would be nice to be able to preview toy effects in the dog screens when I, for example, get offered the bribe or the leash, which I had no idea what it did on my first run. But my biggest feedback point right now is balancing. I got stuck on multiple occasions with an enemy constantly adding distraction to me, and there is just no way out of it. The last time it rose to 172, because it only needs a few doubles to get there. Safe to say there is no way out of that, and I had to just cancel the run. I feel like this shouldn't be possible ever. I would be fine with losing, but having an enemy that doesn't win, while I am also unable to get any points, has me stuck in an infinite loop. Combine this with an enemy that can only distract and steal when you have the toy that disables stealing, and you will just sit there. I think some of the issues could be solved by making distraction chance based, for example. So there is a higher and higher chance of failing my trick instead of flat out taking away all my point gain. But it would also be great to have other options to fight this, or something like a sudden death mechanic that lets you break out of it. Additionally, having more card variety would make the competition a bit more interesting. Something like "This card will trigger the next card twice" or "This card halves the effect of the enemy's first trick" would add more options to the play. I was confused at first by my inability to spend my gold during runs to maybe strengthen my pup in certain ways, which I think could also help add more variety to the gameplay loop by making me decide if I want to bring the money back home to my resort or spend it here. There has been no instance in which it seemed reasonable to get the +400 coin bone toy as opposed to anything else. I realize, of course, that this game has just released and the team is not very big, so I cannot wait to see what you add in the future. But these are my feedback points after my first play session yesterday.
World's Goodest Pup is a chill vibe. The animation and music steal the show - you're instantly transported into a relaxing land where cute dogs try to out-trick each other for XP, gold, and most importantly, glory. The deck building mechanics are easy to pick up, but complex enough to customize different strategies in the quest to be the goodest pup. 5/5 bones.
Incredibly addicting. Fun and relaxing (the dogs are hilarious!), and yet also a great deck building game (curse you Bailey!). Would definitely recommend!
I love love love the animations - they add so much personality to the dogs. Getting to each new competition is great, since I'm eager to hear what each new dog is "all about" when the game shows what they are thinking. I've been playing in "relaxed difficulty" and it IS in fact very relaxing. It's nice just to tap along and watch the doggos go back and forth with their tricks. As WeRateDogs would say 14/10!!!
A simple but incredibly adorable card builder, fluid adorable animation of the dog characters, brilliant visuals, game play might be a little slow for some but it's all about the adorable puppers and that's what you are getting
The deckbuilding has way more depth than the cozy dog show aesthetic would suggest, and each breed actually plays differently enough to matter. Resort-building between runs is a smart meta layer that keeps things interesting. Three breeds at launch is light, but the card synergies and build variety make up for it. Solid little roguelike deckbuilder, worth your time if that's your genre. My kids will love this too.
Very easy to pick up game, cute, and seems to have a good gameplay loop.
