I received With Eyes of Ice as an awesome birthday gift. It is a kinetic story with no choices or branches that has amazing artwork, good writing and a great accompanying soundtrack. If you hit the “H” button anytime in game it hides the hub for taking screen-caps and the text is very easy to read. Also there are lots of save slots. The game is not long for a novel, and for achievement hunters you can get them all in one natural play-though. A polished bug free experience as well. I had no problems or crashes. My only gripe is that the ending is cut too short. I wanted a more fulfilling ending. Maybe there will be another story that follows in the future of these characters. Great story, recommend! 💙
(I played this game on itch.io initially, so my time played is not accurate - it probably took me somewhere between 10 and 12 hours to read this VN.) I expected to enjoy this game (and I did), but what I didn't expect was that I would like every single one of the characters. Some more than others, certainly, but given how dark the game gets, and the actions of some of the characters early on, I was surprised when I was able to like and empathize with every single one of them. This, I think, is a testament to the care ebi-hime puts into writing her characters; even the more antagonistic characters felt human and, if not relatable, at least with a degree of charm. While I don't think this game could really be classified as a "romance game" (hence the label "otome-esque"), there's a lot of really fun moments with all the pretty boys (and one very pretty girl) that I enjoyed reading (Kai best boy). This enjoyment always had an undercurrent of Fear knowing that things would take a turn later; the longer that things were mostly Normal, or at least Okay, the more and more tense I got waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think the payoff when it finally did was well worth it; the story was suitably heart-wrenching, but at the same time not nearly as bad as I'd feared after becoming so attached to the characters. The art and music are also absolutely gorgeous, and the music in particular fits the story perfectly. I tend to have trouble remembering how a song sounds if I'm not Currently Listening to it, but the title track of this VN is embedded in my brain (and I have zero problems with that, it's a nice soundtrack to go about my day to). This VN is a bit more expensive than ebi-hime's works tend to be, but I really think it's well worth the price for the story alone, not to mention the stunning visuals, effects, and music. I hope that people consider playing it even if they don't usually play kinetic VNs or VNs without explicit romance.
With Eyes of Ice is an otome, kinetic visual novel developed and published by ebi-hime. You take on the role of Gréta Egilsdóttir, a young woman who is seen fleeing through the snow of Iceland on one cold winter night. It's obvious that Gréta is fleeing from someone or something, but then she ends up collapsing in the snow towards what would seem to be her death. However, she then awakens (albeit in a feverish state) sometime later in a warm room and sees that a young man has rescued her. As Gréta falls back asleep, though, she reminsces on all the events that led her to her current predicament. Then, we're taken into Gréta's past when she once lived with her grandmother in the small village of Reykjahlíð. Especially since this is a linear story, I'll end my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers. ^^ As for the gameplay, there are no choices presented, so you just play through the story from beginning to end. However, there are lots of CGs as well as a varied soundtrack (but no voice acting). Also, there are lots of Steam achievements although at the time of this review, they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game". In addition, after you complete the story, fragments and the author's notes are unlocked. The latter should be self-explanatory, and as for fragments, they show glimpses into past events of various characters (other than Gréta). Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. I enjoy a lot of ebi-hime's VNs, and when I heard that this latest release is an otome, I knew that I had to play this. First, I like how the story starts off with Gréta (only in her nightgown) running away. You know that probably, something terrible has happened, but you have no clue as to what it is. Fortunately, she gets rescued just as it looks like she's about to die, and then shortly after, we're transported into Gréta's past. I like how this story is presented, as it begins in a dramatic fashion before it get to the slower scenes. Once we're taken back into the past, that's when we get to know the characters and the events that led up to Gréta's predicament. I like the cast of characters here. Gréta, the main character, is a sweet, naive girl who's poor but living happily with her grandmother. However, she certainly doesn't have it easy, living among unfounded rumors by the villagers. (I suppose some villages have residents like that.) Thus, Gréta has very few close friends. Petur, the childhood friend, is sweet although a bit timid since he's afraid to take action at times. Then there's Kai, the young farm boy who meets Gréta and escorts her to her new job as a housekeeper. I found him to be sweet and friendly. Kai's position is different from Petur's since Petur is the son of a district commissioner and is surrounded by wealth, whereas Kai is the second son of a family of poor farmers. Next, there's Nataníel, a doctor who initially arrives in Gréta's village to attend to Petur's sick mother and ends up looking after Gréta's grandmother, too, for a little time. Nataníel truly wants to help people (thus, why he became a doctor) but he seems engrossed with his work. Finally, there's Steina, Nataníel's pregnant wife whom Gréta becomes a housekeeper for. Even though Steina appears to be nice at first (maybe a bit overbearing), Gréta discovers that there's a much darker side to Steina that later is explained. There's a great variety of characters here. As to the story itself, I don't wish to go into too many details since that would be going into spoiler territory, but I like how it progresses. Although there are some light-hearted moments, the story is definitely on the darker, more disturbing side. There are even scenes like
physical and emotional abuse
. Despite that
one of Gréta's potential love interests dies T_T
, I like how the story ends although we never find out whether
there's a possibility of Gréta and Nataníel getting together
. As for the writing, the story pacing was fine, and as I mentioned earlier, I like how it starts off and then goes back into Gréta's past. I noticed a couple of typos that could use correction, but they don't distract from enjoying the story. In regards to the art, it is beautiful with the sprites in the typical anime style. I feel like the sprites also depict the characters' personalities, such as Gréta's blond hair and blue eyes appearance giving off that sweet, naive personality. The backgrounds are done well, too, and I like the use of colors. The CGs are drawn well, and I especially liked the darker scenes, as they give off that disturbing, impending danger feeling. Regarding the music, I like the tracks that are used. There is a variety from the everyday scene to the more dramatic one. My favorite tracks would have to be the ones which depict that feeling that the story takes place in Iceland, one of the Nordic countries. Overall, would I recommend With Eyes of Ice? If you enjoy visual novels and like otome ones that don't
necessarily have a happy ending
, then I think it's worth taking a look. ebi-hime has done a wonderful job writing up this story, and there are definitely unpredictable moments. For the asking price, this might be a bit on the steep side (as it took me fewer than 9 hours to complete the story, get all of the achievements, and read the extra content), so it's probably best to wait for a sale. However, it's worth getting for those who enjoy a good, dramatic story. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
With Eyes of Ice is a well-written otome-esque visual novel that surprisingly became a very personal, emotional experience. I suffered a lot while reading, savoring the story slowly. It made me think a lot, recollect lots of painful memories, question myself, reveal some things in me I didn't know I was capable of. All that hurt a lot, honestly. But anyway I'm happy I've read it. I feel honored to get the key. Usually I try to express myself in reviews writing general stuff but with that level of immersion and involvement I'm afraid it's gonna be slightly spoilerish. I guess I'll write this review not as the way to recommend this game (can I even? It's always so subjective, plus tastes do differ a lot) but as the way to summarize my thoughts, put a full stop and hopefully move on xD I usually call things a 'masterpiece' when it's so perfect I feel I should reread, rewatch it again after some time. This game has awesome visuals, music suits the plot ideally (for me it's a rare thing appreciating it as I find music distracting and just turn it off), for the first time even the sound of all those buttons in the menu was so pleasurable like popping up that air wrap xD Realistic, appealing characters, not leaving you indifferent... you know, take any aspect of the game and it will be perfect, welp, almost, I did find some typos. But despite all that it was so difficult to read I doubt I'll ever be calm and mature enough to reread it again. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3011317872 While reading I recollected our Russian classic literature and a meme that made me laugh hysterically which said that all our literature is based on suffering, chars suffer and a reader with them. I recollected Dostoevsky's book “Poor people”, you know poor in all meaning of the world. Here I felt as if everyone was suffering too. Life was far from being ideal. It was not only about protagonist's miserable fate perhaps for the first time ever I felt like it was more about suffering of the villainess and how it affected everyone else. So I'm gonna talk about her mainly as it impressed me a lot. Right now I'm also reading 'Umineko'. I hated that witch Beatrice so much I was surprised to learn she actually has lots of fans loving her. But reading about Steina here I realized I never knew what hatred means before. It was an astonishing experience. I couldn't believe I can harbor such strong negative emotion. I literally wished she'd suffer, thought that she deserved all her pain and hoped she's just burn in hell. That's so new. I'm not proud of myself, I'm just stating the surprising fact. This novel also has a feature I love so much in ebi-hime's novels—notes. Here she wrote she tried to make Steina human, having justifiable excuses, smth we can forgive her for. But I can't. At first I was anticipating, I wanted to read smth about her past I could sympathize with her but nah. Contemplating a lot I came to several conclusions: --knowing what unfair treatment, abuse means it feels so wrong to want to inflict it on others, esp totally unrelated, innocent ppl. I think it's even more disgusting. All those culprits torturing weak creatures for fun usually don't know what pain is but having suffered yourself and willing to continue that vicious cycle is unforgivable. Painful, hellish past is never an excuse for sadistic, cruel actions. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3013648427 --being nice and good doesn't mean it will actually help others. Sometimes it can be even worse. So in this case why even all those sacrifices?! Why should I play God believing I can change other ppl's lives, influence them?! I should just be me living the way I want, it's their responsibility, not mine to take care of their lives. No, it doesn't mean I don't want to help. If asked, sure but again prioritizing myself anyway. It is healthy. --it's one of the most disgusting things to force your negative experience on others ⋋_⋌ If you were unlucky to meet some bad ppl, don't you dare sully pure innocent souls spreading your poison preaching how everyone and everything is rotten. --some ppl are just beyond salvation. Moreover, some victims could be spared if those twisted creatures were taken care of beforehand. Some just lost their humanity completely and should be get rid of. Capital punishment is a solution after all. --trying to answer the question why I struggle emotionally so much, (I've read so many tragic, dramatic stories before, so what's happened with me?!) I realized it's one thing to be young, naive, full of life, love, energy, beliefs that the good can save everyone and make a huge difference, so being all that optimistic it's kinda fun to tickle your nerves, as we say it in Russian, and dive into some sad story but the other thing when you've already gained a ton of real negative experience, when you are full of stress and anxiety, when your country is involved in that damn war, when the whole world is against you just because of your nationality in such mental state reading smth that sorrowful only adds up and can really be the last straw breaking your resolve to carry on. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3016252727 It's a kinetic story but suffering so much again it boosted my imagination and I kept imagining what if... One more time I felt why I love novels with lots of choices—even if you reach a devastating bad death ending you can retry, act differently and still achieve your happy ending. Here you are devoid of this opportunity. Be kind and nice and understanding and compassionate, it's useless, some ppl are just too wicked. Not being able to trust others, thinking only negative things, they believe others are the same. So, before that novel I thought I was a rather optimistic person believing in love and peace but... It's a well-written enough story making you look at some things differently. Though according to notes what I experienced is not exactly what was intended by the author. Don't see anything bad in it though xD

[th]More thoughts about the game in a Reading Nook [/th]

''Now you can be a real martyr. You’ve even got the stigma to prove it, but it might be a bit lacking in its current state.'' With Eyes of Ice is a great visual novel that feels Otome In Name Only and deftly explores themes of loneliness, uprooting and loss, as well as longing and (self-)sacrifice. This is a kinetic story (give or take 12-15h of reading time) with not a single choice to make and no route to choose from: although there are several ’’love interests’’ in the loosest sense possible, the player can’t influence Gréta’s thoughts or feelings, only be privy to them. It is a pretty bold creative choice for this genre, and it pays off really well. Is there fluff?, the romance-loving crowd - which I’m part of - asks. Yes, quite a lot of genuinely sweet and wholesome moments are to be found here, and the main romance sure is an interesting one. Since this is an ebi-hime novel though, it is permeated by a moody, melancholic atmosphere, which matches well the desolate Icelandic landscapes and claustrophobic little villages she chose as her settings. The game also does cross into more disturbing territory at some point, although this is not a horror game in disguise. Just one that isn’t afraid of making its characters suffer for their bad life choices and miscommunication issues. For those familiar with the developer’s previous work, the writing is not as literary or ornate as in, say, Asphyxia or It gets so lonely here, but it does such a good job at peeling the layers of the characters (Gréta is an endearing main character and it was great to see her evolve - or struggle to - during the course of the novel) and being engrossing! You really do want to know what’s going to happen next: The story, in a twist that can’t fail to immediately grab the player’s attention, starts in medias res with the scene shown in the trailer (Gréta running in the snow at night), and the novel then unfolds in flashback form, explaining what she is running from, and why. The pacing isn’t perfect (I really wish some of the slice-of-life content had been cut back in the latter third of the game because it does feel like an artificial way of avoiding the - good - drama that’s happening in parallel, but it’s a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things), and an epilogue could have been welcome, although upon finishing the game, the player unlocks fragments of memories from other characters than Gréta, which actually shine some new light on the ending. They’re really good and contain some of my favourite moments in the game. Actually, I think that this VN might become an even better experience during a reread. This might count as a slight spoiler but it is worth noting that With Eyes of Ice contains a very well-written depiction of asexuality, which is fully embedded in the plot in a smart and respectful way. It was a welcome surprise, and I absolutely loved it. To conclude, I really, really enjoyed With Eyes of Ice and especially the three main characters, who form the most unusual and unsettling love triangle I have had the pleasure(?) of seeing in a while. I loved learning how and why they ended up as they did. Honestly, the game could be trimmed down to half its length and focus almost exclusively on them and I would be happy with it. It could become stifling real fast though, so I get why the developer didn’t do that and added some lighter scenes… Anyway. If you enjoy reading and like the slice-of-life/romance/drama genres, this game is for you. It might not be groundbreaking but it does contain some truly compelling bits and pieces of characterisation I have rarely seen the like of before. I like the fact it plays with otome tropes and embraces some while bending and twisting others. It also has pretty high production values with a lot of pretty CGs and a really atmospheric soundtrack, with slightly haunting character themes and beautiful songs inspired by nordic folk music that truly enhance the scenes instead of merely accompanying them. Oh, and you know the popular adage, ’’The road to hell is paved with good intentions’’? Well. That’s what With Eyes of Ice is about. You just have to see it for yourself.
A perfect reading to cool off on summer and to set the mood on winter ! Also protecc thee sweet Gréta and Nataníel is best husbando (although to be honest, I want to protect all the others characters too. dammit ebi-hime did an another excellent job at making me emotional attached to their characters).
Nataníel is very cute and precious
This story is really really good, it's so interesting and I love the characters they all have so much depth.
I haven't finished the game quite yet, but I am at the climax and so emotionally invested. For that alone, I think this game deserves a positive review. The characters are complex and layered and I can't help but root for them even when they're at their worst. Definitely recommended if you like drama or romance VNs.
