Fallstreak 2: Traum

Notice: This game was given to me for free to curate, which does not guarantee a positive review, and reflects my sincere opinion. 8-15 hours to complete, Fallstreak 2: Traum is a Dark Fantasy VN that continues from the first free visual novel, Fallstreak, and continues the journey of our young protagonist Adelise. After the fall of her paradise and learning more about the secrets and consequences behind her Golden Dream, Adelise and her friends make a treacherous journey beyond the mist that cradled Socotrine into the beautiful and horrifying world of the Fae. As she gathers her strength and learns to use her magical abilities, where will her heart lead her? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3636374370 Fallstreak 2 is an incredibly tragic novel I would never willingly gift to someone due to its heavy themes and incredibly high number of character deaths, yet it’s a VN I still recommend because the novel is skillfully crafted with love and care. There is a significant shift in tone from the slice of life elements from Fallstreak, with Fallstreak 2 being a stronger, faster paced novel with action and more details. As a note, I suggest playing Fallstreak: Requiem for my Homeland before Fallstreak 2 or directly after it, as there are some re-occurring characters and provides additional background info regarding some situations our heroine finds herself in. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3636389379
If you liked this review and want to read about similar games or just support me on my journey of playing my entire Steam backlog, you can join my curator group, Rune's Reviews! Have a nice day! "She took the kids. And the house." Actual quote from this game, which also contains multiple bloody and fairly gorey fights to the death, various mental breakdowns, and a concerning amount of cannibalism jokes. I can only offer my highest recommendations.
The deceptively titled third Fallstreak game, Fallstreak 2 Traum has finally come out and it's just as good as I had hoped. Starts at a breakneck pace which felt a tiny bit off to me, but once it gets rolling properly it's somehow massively better than the already really good prior two games. Given the original Fallstreak is free I'd strongly urge giving it a shot to get a taste of what Centi is capable of. And keeping in mind that this one is superior. Strong recommend naturally.
After reading Fallstreak and Fallstreak: Requiem for my Homeland, I had relatively high expectations for any sequel that might come, and I'm happy to say that Centi delivers again. The writing has improved a lot since the previous works (I don't know what Centi does for training, but the effort certainly paid off), and it shows in the narrative style, the character voices, and also, the way it explores it themes. Traum starts like a wild ride, and it doesn't hold back with its punches. There are a few things that felt "odd" in regard to the pacing. You go through some important events at a neck-breaking pace, to the point it doesn't feel like there was much buildup until that moment. Without going too much into spoiler territory, we finally start getting some answers to questions from the previous two games, though it also opens a lot of questions itself, too. Despite the improvements that were introduced in Requiem, I wasn't very happy with how short that game was, since, as a result, it ended up being extremely vague at explaining the mysteries of this universe. That isn't to say that mystery is inherently bad; if anything, I really enjoy pondering the events in these games and theorizing about it, but I acknowledge that perhaps that is a turn-off for some, and the food provided by Requiem was quite lacking even for myself. Thankfully, this game starts to address these questions to a degree, but it also introduces a few new elements, and as a result, I feel like the original elements haven't been properly explained yet. This, and the "odd pacing", would be the only criticism I would make to this game. However, considering that there will be a final entry for these series, it makes sense that the game hasn't shown all the cards up it sleeve yet. I also think even these events that we rush through will be addressed there. As for the contents of the game itself, it's exactly what you'd expect from Fallstreak: we have funny SoL moments intermingled with very serious moments, unexpected twists, and a lot of action. I'm not a fan of battles/fights in VNs (shounen elements usually bore me, and sadly most authors can't to write action without going this way), but I would say they're very serviceable in Traum; perhaps even better than your average action novel (though I'm not the best to judge). At the very least, they didn't feel annoying, and the story is good enough to motivate even someone like me to go through them, so make of that what you may. Personally, I'd argue the strongest point in Fallstreak (even since the first game) is the character writing: both when they interact among themselves, and when they analyze things introspectively. And oh boy, the cast does deliver in this regard. Despite the flaws I mentioned, I definitely enjoyed Traum, and I can recommend getting into these series. Definitely looking forward to the last entry too.
An excellent dark fantasy vn with surprising amount of comedy. if you enjoyed the first 2 fallstreak games, I don't see any reasons to not get this one. I liked the new characters more than the old ones.
As much as I feared that Traum won't even deliver half of the emotions the first game provided, not only this was not the case; the long-awaited sequel went even further, adding epic component to the classic Fallstreak mix of gruesome tragedy and dreamlike coziness. Moreover, the author finally found the point of balance in their writing, so that neither more it wanders into sophisticated thickets, nor it mercilessly oppressing a reader with heart-rending nakige passages in vein of Requiem. If I had to describe the feeling Traum invokes, the word "nostalgic" would probably do the best. Characters losing something precious at the beginning, but find something new at the end, a newfound home gives way to a new loss, so that Ade and those she holds dear can move forward. On that topic, the game finally reveals some of the mysteries surrounding Adelise and Socotrine, but also adding some new ones about Fallstreak metaverse. Now, another clear improvement it's action scenes. While Requiem already had raised a degree of intensity in battles, Traum turns it to 300%, adding new "players" and new "classes" to the battlefield. Some of the showdowns truly feel like you're reading a text version of some of the toughest FromSoftware games battles, add to that new really fitting musical themes put just where they feel the best. Of course, perfection is the enemy of good. Some jokes were corny to my taste (pun unintended), the beginning was a bit way too brutal and intense right off the bat (I absolutely don't recommend to start getting into Fallstreak series from Traum to not get wrong impression, lol), and I would really like to see a more elaborated conclusion to Eadem's reminiscence. Still, these cons are not enough to beat all the genuine emotions the story presented. Just like back when I randomly stumbled on Requiem and gave it a try on a whim, Fallstreak reminded me again that Western visual novels can be actually entertaining and genuine, without relying on ten levels of memes and self-irony, without being embrassed of their Japanese "ero-stories for nerds" origins, all while being polished and having heart and actual effort put into every aspect. Thank you for creating this piece, Centi.
The game has beautiful music, art, and a very moving story!
Yet another masterpiece from Centi, as always, the story is beautifully written, the artwork is amazing and the music is great, and yes, once again, I, a heartless brute, cried a lot, we're 4 for 4 on the crying. I've been a huge fan of the series ever since the first game, my reviews and my playtime speak for themselves.
I've waited so long for this to come out and it was well worth it. Absolutely beautiful. The philosophical questions and perspectives this series raises has always been what's made it special to me and this sequel is no exception. I cannot wait for the finale!
I'm pretty sure some of these reviews are fake based on their massively excessive or not enough playtime (~8h is what you need to read casual speed) or mentioning things that I don't think happen in the story.
Steam Deck Experience: Playable
Needed to configure mouse and keyboard emulation. Text might be hard to read. This was a tremendous disappointment. The previous game had such a beautifully crafted world and set of characters that just gets thrown away within the first hour of this story. Then it's replaced by a new, much shallower world, and a few new obnoxious characters that I couldn't care less about. They massively overused a lot of cheap story tropes and plot devices, their favorite being the Worf Effect. Finally, the pacing was kind of jarring and with literally every single character having a tragic backstory, you kind of become numb to the sorrow, so they had to find even more ways to make characters have tragic things happen to them. However, after a character nearly bleeds to death for a third time and you know they are going to be saved by hand wavy healing magic, it's hard to worry about that anymore. I hit the 2 hour mark and wanted to refund this game, but it was like watching a car pileup on an icy road where I couldn't look away and kept thinking it couldn't get worse. I kept hoping it would all start to make sense, or at the very least, they would pull a "it was all just a dream" and go back. This story felt so random. Every scene and character just felt completely out of place. It felt kind of like if a school student was forced to write a story so they just bashed together whatever came to mind. Maybe if Traum was it's own story and didn't throw away what the first Fallstreak had made, it would have been fine.
