Progress through vast procedurally generated biomes filled with hidden mysteries, hand-crafted dungeons and quests. Gather your crew and captain your ship through brutal naval combat with boarding actions and seamless transitions between ship and shore.
Defeat challenging bosses on your swashbuckling adventure driven by real-world characters and supernatural forces alike.
Every legend begins with a reckless crossing.
You are a captain who dares to challenge Blackbeard. What begins as a grounded story of survival and revenge draws you into a growing conflict between empires, pirate clans, and mysterious dark powers looming on the horizon. Windrose is steeped in the allure of the Age of Piracy.
Answer the call of the seas and move seamlessly between ship and shore. Naval combat is shaped by your decisions, whether you’re trading cannon fire at range or closing in for fierce boarding actions. Equip and customize your ship to suit your playstyle, from nimble ketch to versatile brig and monstrous frigate. And when the cannons go silent, claim your spoils and share a sea shanty with your crew as you sail onward.
Establish a foothold in vibrant, diverse biomes, gather resources, and build to your own taste, from simple shelters to elaborate mansions and fully developed forts. Recruit NPCs and grow your settlement to speed up harvesting and production.
This world belongs to the brave and the curious, so venture into the uncharted lands. Over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest contain endless secrets and treasures, though such rewards rarely come without risk. Trade with different factions to gain the edge you’ll need.
Hack, slash, batter, and shoot your way forward! Master a wide arsenal of melee weapons and firearms. Parry and dodge enemy attacks, chain different strikes, and keep an eye out for new gear, including sabers, rapiers, halberds, greatswords, pistols, muskets, and more.
Shape your combat style through talents and flexible loadouts with unique armor sets. Use food and potions to gain powerful buffs. Test your skills against a wide range of enemies and challenging bosses, defeat them, and claim their treasures.
Windrose is fully playable solo offline or in co-op with friends, supporting up to 8 players, with both self-hosted and dedicated servers available. Procedural generation will make each journey stand out. Please note: due to performance, especially in the late game, we recommend to play in the party up to 4 players for the optimal experience.

Was having a great time in the game playing co-op with the family. Took some great quality of life improvements over Valheim and ship battles are great fun and challenging. However one of the missions at the end of chapter 1 has a severely overpowered boss. Its a super frustrating encounter and we cant even get close to completing it. We have leveled everywhere else in that chapter, maxed out the gear and weapons and completed all other missions. We just cant get past this boss. This boss fight resembles Dark Souls more than a survival game. The boss fight itself is also penned into an arena which is totally against the flow of the rest of the game, such as camps and ruins. Its such a huge pity that this is in the game because it doesnt suit the gameplay and this boss is super strong, super fast and super annoying. None of the family want to continue the game now because of this, including myself.
You know what .. stunning visuals and smooth gameplay is just a mask for what is lacks in combat on land and on sea ..... stagger in combat takes like 4 seconds and if you fight more that 2 enemies you can just prepare to die because when staggered you just watch them slice your limbs off one by one.. you can not even heal .... so when attacking camps you have to pick off one by one enemy, unless goats "help" you.............. I am stuck at the point when I am level 10 but enemies in quests are level 12 so good luck with that.... they make you fight like about 15 ships at once and they are still spawning, so I fought like 10 ships level 7 and 5 ships level 12 (part of a quest) ... and I only had 2 ships level 12 left with half health an I died .... came back to the spot and all the ships respawned .. the balance between leveling, gathering resources and enemy scaling is awful. Also to get the stuff back you have to sail the ship right in between all the other ships which are already bombing the hell out of you while you are looting. The gameplay at one point does not feel rewarding anymore and you kind of get lost at what to do. Strongly not reccomend.
Im a Pirate. Arrrrr....
Most polished/least broken Unreal Engine 5 early access game I've played. Not comparable to OG AC Black flag's visceral naval combat.
What an absolute waste of complete potential of a game that is lost in an entire identity crisis with 0 vision what it wants to be and repeatedly cosplaying many aspects of other games without even remotely understanding what makes any of those games good in the first place. What this game nails is simply aesthetics and the fantasy of the pirate concept itself, the U.I is promising and the lore is okay enough to get you interested in the direction of the game. Despite these praises, the game pathetically fails in every single aspect expected out of a survival game and makes the entire experience a miserable waste of time, had I not had friends to enjoy this with I would have refunded this absolute dogwater experience within the first hour and a half. The first and foremost issue is this garbage attempt and imitating the souls-like system of combat without actually understanding what makes the souls combat system work, the souls combat succeeds because of how its designed with the single player experience in mind, forcing one hitbox to another to connect without taking into account how network bandwith or ping plays a factor in making the combat flow, anyone on even mid-ping is repeatedly set up to fail. The next issue is the absolute vomit of enemies the game throws at you that will naturally force you into a corner before inevitable death which begins the process of having to pick up your gear and there's still potential for you to lose your gear or for it to completely bug out (Had this happen 4 times on 2 different worlds). The game presents you with frustration point after frustration point and then the progression system, once again, not only is it tied to a single-player game style system in a SURVIVAL GAME MIND YOU, once you do hit the first limit of upgrades you feel ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in terms of a power spike in the game at all, which makes the ENTIRE PROCESS of FARMING feel COMPLETELY POINTLESS. Genuinely what was the design team even thinking how this even is remotely supposed to be "fun". There is absolutely no feeling of "reward" in this game until you get to Tortuga to interact with the lifeless NPC. To make matters worse, the game presents you with a gun in the game and REFUSES to let you craft ammo until the midgame point (BECAUSE WHY WOULD THEY ALLOW YOU TO HAVE FUN WITH THE GUN WHEN THEY CAN FRUSTRATE YOU WITH THE HORRIBLE MELEE SYSTEM) This keeps the game's "difficulty" completely artificial, the upgrades, mean nothing, the talent tree, means absolutely nothing, the exploration means absolutely nothing when every other island is the same copy pasted BS with nothing remotely new to explore. I thought after almost 10 years of SEA OF THIEVES mistakes existing, another alternative would understand not to make the same mistakes but not only did they make the EXACT same mistakes but found a way to do it EVEN WORSE because it REFUSES to reward the user for the time investment in resources OR exploration, the entire "reward' system is tied to JUST progressing the story, for a survival game, this is an absolutely garbage design choice. Naval combat is whatever, passable. The NPC barely contributes to actually helping the feeling of overwhelmingness when fighting so many enemies that can just 2-shot you. Finally, when you finally do make that progression, the game immediately raises the scaling of the enemies which outscale you, in turn, once again, completely murdering whatever efforts you made in terms of progerssing the game. This game has unbelievable potential but every corner of a design choice the game could have taken is shooting itself in the foot over and over and over again without even bothering to slow down and re-consider how the design elements and systematic approach of the game is. Early Access is not an excuse to neglect any and every form of constructive critisim sent the game's way either, seeing the repeated lack in history of patch notes already shows me how completely disconnected the dev team is with making any improvements. Also if you miss any notes whatsoever, you miss absolute CRUCIAL points of things that would help you progress the game in any shape in farm, what an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of a mess. Terrible game, carried by aesthetics and the fantasy of being a pirate while completely neglecting every single quality of every corner of the game possible.
No meaningful updates since launch. As others have also stated the r/w on SSD's is outrageous. In none engineering terms... its taking the life out of your hardrives in an alarming rate.
The game was fun, but there's no option to disable dropping everything on me when I die. It made me want to chuck the controller across the room. Uninstalling until they add that option. It's unplayable for me otherwise.
