Great game! I love the feeling of exploration and the base building system is well designed. This game surprised me by the amout of quality of life available, from vendor to skip the ressource grind in places you have already completed, to being able to create quick travel points, and having all the chests linked together at the base. On the other hand, the early experience is rough, and the combat are punitive like a Dark Soul. It gets a lot better as soon as you understand how to cook food to triple your health/double your stamina, and upgrade your weapon so you no longer spend 5 minutes tickling a boar that can one-shot you. This game, especially the combat, is much better when played with 2-3 friends.

Nice graphics
The combat is clunky normally, but even more when the AI decides to have every nearby enemy join the fight. Even a low level enemy can two shot you with armor. You are locked into attack animations and sometimes the enemy staggers, but other times they hyper-armor through it and just hit you back with no way of being able to predict it. The ocean is a lot of boring sailing with nothing to do but afk on your way to destinations. The boat combat is pretty fine, but the boat movement feels rather bad. The building system is great though.
Very fun adventure cratfer. I found it hard to stop playing as I always wanted to find out what was on the next island or build a new addition to a base. Loved the game so far I hope we will see lots more options for the ships to come. I would recommend this to anyone that likes adventure survial style games
Very grindy. But you get to be a pirate. And then grind some more. And acquire the means to build your first warship. Plus grind some more. Very tedious, but rewarding if you want to patiently go through the motions.
Do you like Valheim, 7 Days 2 Die? AC Black Flag? Base building and exploring? Then this is the game for you! Windrose is awesome, plain and simple. And not just "awesome for a EA game", because this is much more than that. With right over 100 hours in-game, I've encountered minimal bugs, glitches or exploits. The game is polished, has a great building system that would make both Valheim and 7D2D envious. Lots of different building options and styles. And the best part? Building doesnt necessarily cost a ton of materials! The game features (currently) 3 different biomes, all 3 quite different for each other with different materials, enemies and POIs. Well, 4 biomes if you count the Ocean. Theres loads to explore in each biome, making each fun and new, requiring different tactics for defeating the new enemies. The POIs are great! I love the puzzles and the hidden loot you have to search for. And they are quite diverse for a EA game. Windrose has a lot of different weapon and armor options, suited for what ever style of combat you prefer. I would say however, that the game is melee focused. I at least, couldnt make ranged only combat work for me. Im really looking forward to future updates! Now, for the "negative parts". And I really dont see them as negative just yet, seeing as its still in EA and theres still loads to come. So, rather than "negative", lets call it "Stuff I feel the game needs": The quest progression makes the game quite linear, if you let it. I personally prefer to explore on my own rather than follow markers on a map. And I did so here a well, searching out and exploring every single island. So, rather than a quest being marked on a map, I'd love to see it more general. "Find the island shaped like a horse shoe", "Search east of Tortuga for the ship your hunting" and so on. While each biome has different enemies and wildlife to fight, I'd love to see more diversity in the enemies. The 2nd biome introduces 6(?) new mobs to fight, but I'd love to see more. As well as improved tactics for these mobs. I would also love to see more diversity within each biome. Speaking of biomes and enemies. Once you've upgraded your gear to your current biomes max, all enemies become quite easy to beat. Ship combat is fun, theres no way around that. Does it need a bit of work? Sure. Aiming seems a bit off, and the ships feel a bit like maneuvering a brick at times. But the real downside with ship combat is that its only worth it for a short while. Why? That bring me to my next point. Factions. The game currently have 4 factions. Each faction sell you different gear, materials and building schematics, and each need a certain reputation to unlock each reward. Increasing rep is done by handing in trophies gained in Ship combat or killing certain enemies on land. As well as some being earned in quests. However, getting to max rep with each faction is really easy, and once your there, and you've bought what they have to offer, then Ship combat has no actual reward. Its just time consuming. I would therefor love to see more factions, more to gain from each faction and more use for the items gained from Ship combat in the future. All in all, this game is great. Not great for a EA, but just great. Its well worth the money, and time. And I have faith it will only get better in time. And none of my "Stuff I feel the game needs" will stop me from playing through it again, eve before a new update is issued.
TLDR: I wish I could recommend this game, but after 60+ hours and losing the drive to finish the story, I can't. As fans of Sea of Thieves and veterans of many other survival games, this game showed so much promise. We even played the early access. Finally we got our own server to try it out. Sadly the gameplay loop doesn't really change after you get a boat with cannons. It is a game that expects you to farm A LOT to get to a new area where you are rewarded with nothing but new versions of every material which you get to farm A LOT of. I toned down some of the settings (around 40 hours in, on "normal" mode), and it was still just unbearably repetitive and unnecessarily difficult. My party and I have played a lot of similar survival games together, and we'd all agree there are much better options. It took us some time to realize no matter how much we farmed or progressed in this game, we'd never get rewarded or some payoff for all our hard work.. Even making a brand new weapon and armor set with the brand new material from the new zone wouldn't really help you against the new threats in that area.. Ship combat is a joke, there's only so much you can do about the 8+ ships that will certainly be on top of you the moment you fight the ship you think is all by itself. Regular combat is similarly extremely difficult for no apparent reason, and the talents and finetuning you work so hard for don't seem to help much, either. I started placing a new tent (spawn) probably before every single fight on any island. I had literal hundreds across the server, easily. I love the pirate theme, the settings and the music on the Ship was amazing. The soundtrack might be the only return to this game I'll be making. I should mention the building in this game is very good, although all the cool designs or even basic things like a circular stone foundation to make a tower are locked behind roughly 30+ hours of gameplay. We got some really cool foundation building sets WAAAAY late into the game in the last few areas, and it's like... what do you expect me to do with this at this point? It's a small gripe among a long list of weird stuff about this game. The building mechanic itself is good though, and I like how this game encourages decoration. Maybe this is messed up to add, but we immediately switched our server to a Runescape Dragonwilds server and have had a much much better time on that game.
