EDIT 8/2/20 - Be cautious about supporting this game. I feel I need to edit this review to mention some new, potentially troubling developments. Two weeks ago on the KS, pureworks said they would take the Steam version down. They say they had reached an agreement with JAST to retranslate it and were considering whether to go down that route. However, JAST employees in their Discord claim there's been no agreement in place; it seems pureworks lied as some kind of damage control after the initial flak this game is getting. (Initially, pureworks had also mentioned potentially bringing Sekai Project in to republish, but SP employees claim this is false as well) That flak includes the fact that they basically MTL'd the non-English western languages. Backers who chose the Itchio copy option were told that there would not be a DRM-free release of the game and were given Steam keys instead. FWIW, my initial impressions after the first 15-20mins is that the English version is okay. If they had just kept to English and not lied to backers about JAST's involvement and the DRM-free backer option, I'd probably keep this review as a (cautious) recommendation. But the developers have not handled things well Original Review: I know there's been some concerns about the English TL quality, so I wanted to post a quick review. Basically, it's not bad. It's certainly not MTL like some people were worried. The dialogue can be a little stilted, and there are some minor grammatical errors (unnecessary commas, awkward preposition choices, etc.) but I've read worse and I imagine anybody who's dabbled in VN fanTLs will say the same. It's not the quality we would expect from groups like JAST or NekoNyan, but I do think an overseas, indie studio that is self-publishing/localizing their first VN deserves a little slack. I'm probably not going to do a full playthrough anytime soon since there are other games higher up on my backlog. But after spending a short amount of time with White Wings, there are several things that are interesting. The MC appears to be fully voiced, for one. And right off the bat, this VN seems like it plans to cover some pretty emotional themes (nakige-ish, maybe?) so I think that's promising. The animated sprites via the e-mote system are an okay touch, but don't be expecting Nekopara levels of animation. The Japanese voice acting seems decent as well (though, as somebody who doesn't speak Japanese, take my opinion with a grain of salt) For now? Recommended, provided you know the TL quality can be a little rough around the edges. (Disclaimer: I backed this VN on Kickstarter. I think I'm reasonably objective, but one could argue I might have a slight bias due to being a backer)
Review with accompanying screenshots and video in Sinical Network
https://www.sinicalanimenetwork.com/post/white-wings-review White Wings is Pureworks Japan's first visual novel on Steam. It features a male student Hiro Fujihara, in a modern Japan winter setting. Hiro's mother is concerned that her son's grades in class are slipping and orders him to leave his school's basketball team to make time for tuition classes. Left with no choice, he decides to comply with his mother's wishes.
Quick Note
Before coming to the actual review itself, White Wings is not your typical cute romance visual novel with good endings, despite the lively, upbeat opening theme song and chibi artwork of the heroines. The protagonist and the heroines come from broken families, and someone's life will inevitably be broken in every ending. If you can handle the protagonist being a two-timing and indecisive male who is not really likeable, allegedly broken crowdfunding promises, an uncommunicative development team, and an English translation which falls short of expectations, then read on.
Story
At school, Hiro is introduced to a new transfer student named Moe Miyazawa as his classmate, and a junior student Reika F u k i h a r a as his tuition classmate. Despite Hiro's introverted nature and lack of confidence in himself, he is one of the most popular boys in school where nearly every girl in his school has a crush on him. Moe takes a liking for Hiro after he stood up for her after she got bullied in class, and the same goes for Reika after she saw him play basketball exceptionally well in an earlier game while she was a cheerleader. As a result, Hiro finds himself entangled in a love triangle with Moe and Reika competing for his affection.
What's in it
This game is a romance visual novel with plenty of attractive artwork and great opening theme song and video which piqued my interest in trying out the game despite the numerous negative reviews on the game. After spending around 10 hours to read and listen to all the text and dialogue in the game which consists of 2 routes and 4 different endings, I agree with some of the negative reviews for many reasons, yet I feel this game still has a number of redeeming features to justify writing this review in the first place. For those looking for a more interactive plot-focused visual novel or expecting a cute and sweet romance story, White Wings will be a disappointment because the game has some sexual encounters but they are rushed and/or forced, the protagonist getting pulled into the love triangle, and a less than perfect ending which are unavoidable.
Visuals
The artwork and background music is this game's saving grace which prompted me to write this review in case the game is removed from Steam under the weight of the negative reviews it has been receiving. The animated artwork sprites, character portraits, large amount of CGs, attractive Steam achievements, wonderful theme song by Chata, and opening movie by KIZAWA studio make this game very attractive in its own right. At the time of this review, the Steam achievements will not unlock. This problem can be addressed by reverting the game to the July 2020 version until the trigger to unlock them is fixed in a later patch update. There are published community guides and online databases to help with this part. The game has adult content (an uncensored patch is available at the developer's website).
Audio
White Wings has full voice acting for all the characters including the protagonist and the minor characters. Sadly, the voice acting for the protagonist feels flat. I know the protagonist is a very introverted character with a low sense of self-esteem, yet I can agree with the complaints by others in the Steam reviews. Regarding the voice acting for the protagonist, I might be imagining things, but I thought the voiced lines for the protagonist in the H scenes sounded more as if the voice actor was sighing rather than panting, or was delivering his lines a few meters away from the microphone. This feels underwhelming compared to the voiced lines the heroines deliver in the same scenes. Among the soundtracks for the game, the BGM With Shinshin, Just be Honest and Cold Air has pleasant piano music to suit the romance themes in the game. The opening theme song Pure White easily swings this game from a rough one to a memorable one with its uplifting piano music, bass accompaniment and vocals by Chata to suit a romance and coming-of-age story. Therefore, I have voted this game for the Best Soundtrack Award for 2020.
Translation
In the English version, there are numerous translation errors that may reduce the enjoyment of the game, although most of the text is still understandable. Still, the developer claims in their posts to have found a reputable publisher to retranslate the game in the Steam community hub which may have turned out to be otherwise. The developer should clarify why that has not been done rather than make false claims.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I feel White Wings could have been an excellent adult winter-themed visual novel with its artwork, animation, original music compositions and full voice acting. Sadly, it was let down by less than desirable plot, scriptwriting, translation, gameplay problems for the Steam version, and an unresponsive developer who ignored player concerns. White Wings took me around 10 hours to read and listen to all the text and voiced dialogue, reach all endings and obtain all achievements. If you are looking for a plot-driven visual novel and don't care about the soundtrack and artwork, I can only recommend the base game when it is discounted to less than $5. For those who like the artwork and music in the game, I can recommend the game with all the DLCs when they are heavily discounted within the price range of $10 to $20. White Wings is a VN which was made from Purework. the new developer. After I saw the art and the PV, I decided to support them. I thought it would be great! Keep in mind that I'm pretty easy on reviewing VNs Pros: +Nice Characters Design (Moe is one of the most nice and loyal girl I've ever seen, definitely Waifu Material!) +Nice CGs and backgrounds +Good OST (I love the OP, and the ED is also great!) Cons: +Bad story. You had to achieve 1 bad end to unlock more options for 2 Good End. which I don't mind (it has 2 good ends and 2 bad ends) +Worst Main Character I've ever seen.... +Laggy (My laptop specs: i7 9750 and RTX2080) If you can handle the dumbest MC (in the entire of the VN/A/M I have watched/read), feel free to buy it for great OST, and Waifu (Miyazawa Moe). Otherwise, I don't recommend it at all. NOTE: Please don't install 18+ patch, it makes the game much worse. Sadly, I gotta say, I was so disappointed because I had high expectation from it...
Gonna get some of my technical gripes with this game out of the way first since my interpretation of the story can be viewed as subjective (though I stand by every word of this review that I've typed). I was so excited for a light novel with voice acting, but the implementation of the voices is distractingly poor. At random, voices are either too quiet or too loud. Some character's voices were recorded with quality, while others have a lot of reverb and feedback. Tense scenes with the main character yelling at the top of his lungs are undercut by the fact that the voice actor is standing 10 feet away from the mic because no one bothered to edit or direct the recordings. This is a shame because between the emote system and the dubbing, I was really looking forward to the immersion that this game could provide. I did still like the e-mote animation system. *SPOILERS AND TRIGGER WARNING* Chose the quiet one in the beginning. Got RAPED by the other one, which pushed me further away. But I was also nice to her sometimes because both girls faced serious life problems. Then I got MURDERED. So I end up with my rapist or I get murdered. To be fair, I almost certainly got the bad ending. But 1. I don't understand the specific decisions I made that led to my bad ending. You have to outright choose to either do SERIOUSLY messed up things to one character, or poke along this 'I'm leading them both on I'm such a bad guy' narrative that the game is trying to force onto your character. The consequences of your decisions are also intangible at best. It's nearly impossible to recognize whether or not you made a bad decision because they ALL FEEL LIKE BAD DECISIONS. And it's not a question of "oh wow these are morally ambiguous choices I have to make and the game is making me think deeply about which one I should pick" it's "what kind of idiot would say do or think any of this:. 2. I begrudgingly worked my way through three hours of character interactions and arcs that were governed by a$$holeness and outright stupidity only to be confronted by the WORST BAD ENDING EVER. My reaction to getting murdered was exactly this - I chuckled twice and exclaimed to myself "yo this game SUCKS". When the decisions are intangible, and none of the characters are likeable, why would I care about being murdered? If I was invested in the characters and my actual indecisiveness led to this kind of ending, I would be heartbroken. Instead, I got a cartoonishly ill-conceived ending to an already unenjoyable game. Maybe the good endings are redeeming and I'm missing out. But even if that is the case (which that game has given me no reason to believe) it doesn't justify just how ineffective the bad ending is and the degree to which I feel like my time has been utterly wasted.
Oh boy, White Wings is the most poorly programmed VN I've ever touched. Worst part is I backed it on Kickstarter. Do I regret it? Yes. I've played enough to get all endings. The good: Story is... okay, it could have been so much better if the MC wasn't a total ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and for a specific ending (more below) The art style is what caught my attention to when I backed it on KS, It's cute. That's it. Music isn't bad actually, it does it's job. Not much to say about it. The bad: The MC is probably one of the worst characters I've seen. Take your stereotypical awkward romance MC but multiply it tenfold and give him depression. I'm not joking when I say tenfold, It's so cringe. "mIyAzAwA MoE" - Ozasa Megumi (you will be hearing this 24/7, get used to it now.) Ending B... why? They literally took
Yuri from Doki Doki Literature Club
to make this ending. It makes no sense, it's such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ending lmao. H-18 patch was so rushed and bad that I genuinely recommend that you don't use it. It actually makes the whole experience worse. The Skip button works 50% of the time. Like, how? Unskippable Intros/Credits. The programming of this game is abysmal. It takes about 5 minutes to boot up the game and save it. Not to mention boot errors and making your computer crash if you do something when waiting to save a game. I did find workarounds but still. Game boots but freezes? Wait 5 to 10 minutes. Freeze when saving? Do above BUT MAKE SURE TO EXIT THE GAME AFTER A SUCCESSFUL SAVE AND DO NOT OPEN EXPLORER RELATED WINDOWS OR YOU RISK A COMPUTER CRASH. Game wont boot. Syntax error or just a bunch of ? Marks? Verify game cache, go into local game files and delete the save data folder. Do I recommend? Not really. While the story isn't the worst I've read, It's definitely not good. Is it Decent? Hard maybe. There's way worse out there, after all. -1 point for Ending B being stupid and pointless. -2 points for bad programming. 3/10
I think the protagonist should have been indifferent to all the heroines instead of being in love with one of them which made the story biased. Also, his personality was very weak which was irritating.
It takes the basic love triangle situation and turns it into a sad love story. You will probably not cry, but you will certainly not laugh. It's interesting to follow the characters as they struggle with their love life, school life, friendship and bullying. But whatever you choose, you will never make everyone happy. Graphics are good and the Emote system is put to good use. The character's animations are well done (without the exaggerated movements like in other games) and the soundtrack matches the mood of the scenes. Note that it requires to play the game twice to unlock the true endings.
