There are other, more realistic climbing games. However, I have yet to find one with the depth and vibe of white knuckle. Your first run will feel worlds different than your 10th run and the slow progression of your own skill and knowledge of the game transforming your runs will be intoxicating. The free demo has a ton of content and is more than enough to figure out if this game is for you or not, so please do yourself the service of possibly playing your new favorite climbing game
Let me start by saying that I definitely recommend the game. However, there are a few significant issues that, in my opinion, dampen the experience. The main problem: As you’d expect, the game revolves primarily around climbing. The climbing mechanics themselves are executed extremely well. However, for me, the enjoyment came more from the learning process than from the gameplay itself. The moments where I discovered new things and got to grips with the mechanics were always great, but that phase ended after about 10–12 hours. At that point, I reached areas where I could no longer afford to climb casually and had to play with extreme precision. That left me feeling stressed rather than truly having fun. The Timer: From the very beginning, the game features a sort of timer—a fluid level that keeps rising—making it clear that time is limited. For me, this discouraged exploration (though there isn't all that much to explore anyway). Unused Items: The game includes various item categories, such as tools (objects you can place). While there aren't many of them, there are at least four items I never actually used. Since there is always a way to progress without items—or you find the necessary item right where you need it—building your own path using them felt unnecessary and risky. Rare/Formidable Enemies: You rarely have to fight enemies. You start with a rather unremarkable hammer and only acquire "real weapons" much later. In two later areas, the constant timer is removed and replaced by a recurring monster. While you can fight it off briefly, it is quite possible to run out of ammunition and find yourself unable to defend yourself. Summary: White Knuckle featured an exceptionally good climbing system, but that alone doesn't provide enough gameplay to sustain long-term enjoyment. The fun seems to stem more from discovery and learning than from the actual gameplay mechanics. The infrequent combat encounters offer little variety (with the exception of the Nest). The time pressure—whether direct or indirect—tends to make the gameplay stressful rather than fun, especially in the later stages. The levels are very linear and offer little variety or opportunity for exploration in the long run. Verdict: The climbing system is well-designed and serves as a solid foundation, yet it struggles to sustain an entire game (a fact that becomes increasingly apparent the longer you play).
