I'm surprised I hadn't given this novel a review. Well, for what it's worth, I enjoyed playing it, and do recommend it to anyone who has an active imagination to enjoy a fantastic story such as this. Better still, your play file can be continued in the second story, Pack Mentality!
I would say that this game is not entirely bad but plot sometimes goes beyond what I am able to understand.
I mean there were some situation where MC teacher/girlfriend was fighting some soldiers. They were together and for some reasons she got captured and MC not. He was kinda like skipped and we just returned to some safe area. There also wasn't much our MC wanted to do about her getting captured and instead got elected to being pack leader and carry on with his life. I also felt that lot of fights were kinda skipped and sometimes I felt that there are not many warewolf fighters but somehow later we are even have few groups of them(?) and we can "rally" them to fight. I felt somewhat confused if there are those fighters or we are outnumbered outgunned and we will got anihilated without much opposition. The main plot which suggest that "big bad enemy" is actually our father who also cannot understand that he sometimes is warewolf and sometimes human seem quite questionable for me. Like he can have some schizophrenia but he actually have soldiers under him. They should spotted that their leader is leaving for days and behave like hobo. Besides those soldiers are also dumb and linear. In some final fights I was quite confused when warewolf were in lost position but soldiers were kinda just geting killed all the time as if they didn't have guns and instead they just charge on big bad wolfs with some spear or sword. In the end of my first playthrough I got killed and could still save game... I was curious if that happends how it will proceed with part 2, It was quite funny that after reloading my save I actually won that fight and our enemy was killed instead. I quess I just suck at my choices...
Anyway at this point I am not sure if I really want to buy part 2 or even try to get into second playthrough. If I would have recommend text game about warewolf tho it would be: Blood Moon instead especially for how communication with pack was described there.
It was okay, but I couldn't finish it. I love anything werewolf especially queer werewolves. But. I don't know if the author is Native American, and if they are it would excuse this. But it had that classic - relating native tribes to a type of monster trope and it felt like appropriation to me as a Native person. I can tell the author had good intentions but its just so tiresome to have your people used as a shorthand for savage or monster or outsider, or even the whole 'mystic indian' trope is just so tiresome. Also, I wish I could have learned more about the characters. Some were more fleshed out than others but some didn't feel very personable at all which was sad cause I wanted to like them. Writing is nice and everything. Great beginning. But yeah. Those two issues were just making it not so fun. I wish the author all the best in their next project~
I purchased this game on a whim, and didn't have high hopes for it - I honestly expected it to be boring and/or frustrating, like other pure-text adventure games I've played. But the well-written story quickly drew me in, and it showed a complexity and depth I hadn't been expecting. Rather than being boring or frustrating, I quite enjoyed it. The unfolding story made logical sense and at no time was I confused about what to do next - my path forward was always clear and easy to understand. Pretty darn good for a text-based game! Definately one of the best in it's genre.
I really wish the author of this game would do a WoD Werewolf: The Apocalypse game and show them how it's done, because I tried that OTHER werewolf CYOA game (I know this game is it's own original universe) and I literally couldn't finish it. THIS game however, the writing is so much crisper, the right amount of descriptive, and it doesn't feel like it's preaching at you. It's SUBTLE in many ways, comparatively. I also love that it takes place in a semi-post apocalypse setting, and I feel like it handles the mature themes of genocide/ethnic cleansing, fascist bigotry and ideology and where it leads in a tactful and measured way. It doesn't *tell you* how you should feel, it just presents the story with plenty of emotive and memorable characters, including my terrorist were-wife Bly. Def recommend and hope the author is still making more of these !
