Since this game is being pulled from Steam soon I might as well get this quick review out there in case anyone wants to pick it up at the last minute. Despite the negative reviews I'm honestly enjoying my time with Warlander so far despite its problems. This isn't Dark Souls despite what some people say, let's get that out of the way right now. If you're expecting that then you're going in with all the wrong expectations and a bad mindset. Warlander is a fun hack n' slash combat roguelite game that reminds me a lot of the lightsaber fighting in the Star Wars Jedi Knight series albeit very slow paced and definitely on the janky side. Like this game is REAL jank but it does a lot of things that makes the moment to moment gameplay great fun. The abilities are cool, the enemies are fairly interesting and the aiming based slashes makes finding those holes in enemy armour quite satisfying indeed. However hit detection for enemies is wonky and some types seem tailor made to be dealt with via certain abilities making basic attacks quite risky for some foes but by no means impossible. Character movement also leaves a lot to be desired as your character has to painstakingly transition between all of the animations, on one hand it forces you to commit to your attacks and on the other it makes running around a bit annoying as you slow down as soon as you press another direction - luckily I found holding run forward and turning with your mouse mitigates this issue almost completely. Performance isn't perfect but from my experience, it's sticks to a rock solid 60fps pretty much all the time and I haven't encountered any bugs or crashes so that's a plus. For sure I have gripes with it but if you can get past the game's clunkiness, there's definitely a fun game for sure. I like it so maybe I can help others give it a try since it's 50% off before the game vanishes into the ether. If nothing else you can at least have it for preservation's sake since it will still be downloadable even after it's pulled from sale.

This game has a nice setting, some enemies and bosses look cool, the story is potentially interesting, the feature of being able to slice enemies in a lot of ways is fun. Personally, I don't like the structure of the game: the first run ends quite quickly and for the rest of the game all you have to do is go continuously to the final boss passing through the same environments, enemies, minibosses, etc. trying not to die. The huge problem, as you may have noticed, is that the game was quickly abandoned and removed from Steam without giving much explanation to the community. Those who have the "luck" to play it have a buggy game (some achievements don't work and sometimes you can't continue after killing a miniboss) and it becomes boring after a while.
https://youtu.be/Vr7dNDvp0vw With Warlander leaving the store soon, I figured I'd grab it and give it a shot since it's been on my wishlist for a bit and half-off at the time. Honestly, for about $7 US, I don't really regret the purchase. Though it isn't without faults. Warlander kind of looks and plays like a late PS2 maybe PS3 game. You become more tree than man given a second chance at life to take out the man leading the Teknos who are destroying the land. The game also handles similar to a rogue-like where you choose your path but death is permanent, you battle various waves of enemies in an arena style, and happen on various upgrade nodes. Said upgrades, however, all reset save for any unlocked permanently by defeating various Tekno leaders (think they spell it with a k). The main gripe about the game, however, is that it moves and handles like you are playing under water. The response time with your character isn't the best, either. This does work in favor of having to target the barren spots of enemies and use various methods to tear apart their armor, but even then the speed at which everything moves in this game is maybe half of what would work best. Warlander wants to be a druid rogue-like choose-your-path-from-the-path-tree style arena combat Dark Souls. While the game itself is not bad, the control response and speed everything moves at really kills the flow. If the pacing were doubled and controls tightened, this could have been a good game for $15 US (standard price). Sadly, with the game leaving the store soon, it's clear these small changes that could better the experience will never see the light of day, throwing away what hidden potential this title had. I can't say I don't suggest this game, but I'll say grab it on sale before its gone as it isn't that wretched an experience as many are making it out to be.
The controls are terrible and the character feels as if he is stuck in slow-motion. The story might be solid, but when the controls are so bad it really takes away from the experience. This game was on my Wishlist from the moment I saw it on Steam and I was really looking forward to this game. Please fix the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ controls!!! I really want to like this game but until it gets fixed I think people should just stay as far away as possible.
Previous review: I hope they keep improving this, lord knows there is much scope for it. Still, in its present state i can say it is worth your while for the price if you can look past the polish to enjoy the slicing mechanics. Current review: DO NOT BUY. I reported a bug where the kill doesn't register whenever I finish off one of the bosses and I keep having to restart at the end of that encounter. There has been NO reply on the forums and NO updates to fix the bug. Looks like they did a runner. I do not recommend you buy this game if the devs never post another update.
This game is out of early acces but not even a quarter done i mean i killed the final boss in under 2 hours so it is just to easy but the mages in the game hit really hard even harder then the final boss
Here is my quick review after 5 hours of warlander game experience . Just downvote for now :( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XorXeLqAls
The limb removal is quite cool, the upgrades are effective and noticable and your path is... Complicated
It feels as if you are playing an xbox360 game. Your character moves itself sluggish through the tiny maps. No open world here, just a map/level accordingly to your choice of path. Some of which are rediculous, not as hard but as WHY??? The randomness here is a bit... Ehm... Too random? Two choices lanes going twice to the skilltree. After playing an hour, I finally saw more value to this Permadeathy game. I thought for one hour, you play, you die, you start over with nothing gained. I was wrong. After you have beaten a mini-boss, you earn a passive and permanent weapon ability. The only things that will get reset after death, are your upgrades. So every game till death is different, the small progression as earning the passive weapons makes it all worthwile. Worthwile to come back to it and try again. The main path, or better said: GOAL is to reach the BIG BOSS. The limb removal is not just a gimmick, a novalty but very present as a tactic. Some enemies have helmets and armanants. You can't remove their head or arms if there is an armanent in the way. Unless you did the armor piercing upgrade. The skill tree is more like a choice, a build, what you pleases. What you think is helpful along the way at that time. What feels like a grind, it's not a grind. You earn XP for each kill which you can use to upgrade your blade, abilities and skills, untill death takes it away. But you will notice, after you died and back to the main menu. When you dive back in, you start with some XP and with any earned abilities from beating a mini-boss. But, yeah... Grind... There should be a thing, that for each time you beat a mini-boss, you earn another passive but permanent upgrade ONLY for the abilities. That is what I think. But how it is now is fine too. Sometimes you open a chest where you can choose an upgrade out of two, that will be carried untill you die. And yes, they can stack. Which can result for you becoming very effective. As I said, the character moves very sluggish. Well the movement speed upgrade, even only 5% is VERY noticable! Suddenly the sluggishness is gone or better said, made less noticable. Your path is also based on luck, what you get at that given time, if your timing was correct, if you used the best tactic for the situation. Every map/level where you have to fight, has a healing option, so use it carefully! Fighting can be quite basic, keep your distance and everything feels easy, especially when you have unlocked a long ranged weapon or skill (like the throwing of the sword).
After playing 2.5 hours, I want to go back to it. See how far I can get the next time. Very challenging game, but once you get into it, learn how to master everything, it's quite enjoyable!
At first, I thought this was an open world thingie with explorational features. But, no, it's a challenging, permadeath choice of luck type of a game.
