About
Warhounds is a turn-based tactical & strategy game, inspired by XCOM and Jagged Alliance, about a mercenary squad with an old-school action movie vibe. Command an elite team of bold, stylish operators, wage a campaign in an alternate-future Africa, and decide the war’s outcome mission by mission.
Calculate lines of fire and flank angle, break cover, and seize the high ground. Every turn is decided more by your planning and tactics, less - by RNG.
Combine classes: Assault, Specialist, Sniper, Machine Gunner, and Grenadier. Pick the right gear for the job, treat and extract, and protect key operatives. Take calculated risks. High combat lethality makes every decision count.
Recruit, upgrade, purchase equipment, and handle logistics, finances, medical supplies, and downtime. Choose allied factions, build relationships, gather intel, and execute covert ops. Your choices have consequences: your decisions determine your access to missions, gear, and allies.
Deploy drones, combat scanners, smoke, and optical camo. Upgrade and improve your kit to win under any conditions.
Knock out a mission in 25-40 minutes, or settle in for a long session. Customize the challenge: go for a brutal tactical hell or a light, relaxing run.
No point-blank misses - flank + close distance = 100% hit chance.
Real ballistics, destructible cover, vertical gameplay, and cone overwatch.
Mercenaries with character and mission-focused loadouts without any busywork.
Base management, contracts, budgets, allies, and consequences for your actions.
Assemble your squad. Take the contract. Decide Africa’s future beyond 2035.

I wish there was a "maybe" button weather I recommend this or not. It's has good fundamentals but in the end it's very mid. You can customize your characters but options are very limited. Story is very bland, the characters too, it uses AI generated images, the dialogues feel AI generated too. Gameplay is good but it feels simple compared to other games in the genre. If you haven't played Jagged Alliance 3 play that instead. I would recommend this only on a good discount.

I would rate this game "neutral". If you like XCom, you may like this game, too. You have an army on a boat. You build buildings and buy upgrades to recruit a strong squad. You get different missions to gain resources and XP for your squad. But every mission has a chance to fail, too. I think this is a solid game but there are many, many tiny issues and bad implementations which reduce the fun a lot. I play with mouse and keyboard. - Controls are "miss clicking" sometimes. If you want to move on a tile behind another character, you can't select it. You must rotate the camera to send the unit to the tile. - You can find treasures, which can be sold for cash. You can't collect them, when you are ON the tile. You must stay next to it. Sometimes this exposes your unit to enemies, when there is only a barrel (a 1 tile-size barrier). - The controls when you have multiple levels (high buildings, stairs and ladders) are "bad". You have to go somehow "level up" or "level down" but the walking area is not always visible. In addition: Levels above are shown, too. So somehow you see the levels above while you can't actually move there because of the walking range. In general: The controls and especially the camera *must* be improved! I had 1-2 city missions with some higher buildings and it was hell to play these.. - Sometimes, a character is not selected when I click on him with my left mouse. I'm not sure if this is a "wrong level" issue where the camera and my actions don't match. I would love if the controls are more like in XCOM or XCOM 2. The camera and multiple levels were implemented in a great way. - Grenades are somewhat random. Sometimes, the enemies get damaged when they are 5 tiles away and have a barrier in between. Sometimes they get no damage even when they are directly next to the landing tile. At least the HP bar is blinking, so you know if the enemy gets damaged or not. But it feels random in some cases. - Naming grenades: Nothing (besides some crates/cover) is destructible. So when you throw a grenade on a building, the wall is still standing. The enemy, directly next to the grenade, gets no damage because there is a indestructible wall in between. Maybe this thing is 10000m thick and can take a whole grenade. On my screen it looks like a standard wall which should be damaged by a grenade. So you can't destroy cover on upper levels like balconies and they don't fall down. The roof is made of ferroconcrete, too. It can resist an atomic bomb. - Icons should be always visible at the border of the camera. Sometimes you have missions like "plant a bomb" or "escape to the choppa". You must remember where it is and zoom out often, to see where you have to go. Sometimes the camera is rotated randomly by the game, so walking into one direction (e.g. only top) is wrong. I would like to have icons always shown at the border of the screen like escape, planting enemies or my squad, when I don't see them with my current camera. - Enemy indicators would be nice, too. Sometimes you get sniped from enemies you can't see. Some (roughly) indicator would be nice, where the shot came from. It may be a 5x5 marker but helps a lot, to move my squad or seek for cover. I think this game has a lot potential (that's why I pressed the thumbs up), but there are a lot of QoL issues which make this okayish game to a great game.

It is fun at times I have to admit, but if ever there was a game that could benefit from having workshop on it's 1.0 - it was this game. Look - I'm not gonna dig into it's specifics as other reviews have pointed out, this is inferior to the tactics games it is inspired by in basically every way. However, it's got enough going on here that I think modders could swoop in and make this far more playable and interesting in addition to offering lots of customization that I think this game would benefit further from. Unless you are just desperately in need of an Xcom-alike, you won't miss much here. If you are wanting to dive in, I'd still wait for this to get some more patching for all it's technical issues and hopefully a workshop.
