About
Warhounds is a turn-based tactical & strategy game, inspired by XCOM and Jagged Alliance, about a mercenary squad with an old-school action movie vibe. Command an elite team of bold, stylish operators, wage a campaign in an alternate-future Africa, and decide the war’s outcome mission by mission.
Calculate lines of fire and flank angle, break cover, and seize the high ground. Every turn is decided more by your planning and tactics, less - by RNG.
Combine classes: Assault, Specialist, Sniper, Machine Gunner, and Grenadier. Pick the right gear for the job, treat and extract, and protect key operatives. Take calculated risks. High combat lethality makes every decision count.
Recruit, upgrade, purchase equipment, and handle logistics, finances, medical supplies, and downtime. Choose allied factions, build relationships, gather intel, and execute covert ops. Your choices have consequences: your decisions determine your access to missions, gear, and allies.
Deploy drones, combat scanners, smoke, and optical camo. Upgrade and improve your kit to win under any conditions.
Knock out a mission in 25-40 minutes, or settle in for a long session. Customize the challenge: go for a brutal tactical hell or a light, relaxing run.
No point-blank misses - flank + close distance = 100% hit chance.
Real ballistics, destructible cover, vertical gameplay, and cone overwatch.
Mercenaries with character and mission-focused loadouts without any busywork.
Base management, contracts, budgets, allies, and consequences for your actions.
Assemble your squad. Take the contract. Decide Africa’s future beyond 2035.

Played JA3 for an embarrassing number of hours and was expecting this to feel like a cheaper version. It doesn't. JA3 is still miles ahead in terms of sandbox stuff and character interaction, but Warhounds is more straightforward and combat-focused. Sometimes I just want to load a mission, look at the battlefield and start solving the puzzle. This scratches that itch surprisingly well.

I wanted to love this game. I liked the playtest, so I figured there wouldn't be any issues. Warhounds can be summed up like this: It takes all the fun of XCOM, and throwing it in the bin to appease realism players while adding unfair nonsense. This is nowhere near the worst thing I've ever played, do not get me wrong, but it needs work. The ONLY reason I'm giving this game a thumbs up is because the devs ARE trying, and credit where its due. So they can still make this game a GREAT game. The good things: You can use a controller. It plays mostly like XCOM without the alien mind control bull. The graphics look good. I only had one crash, but no lag otherwise. The story is unique. You can customize the difficulty, allowing player choice. The bad things: The game is "realistic" in the sense that you can friendly fire your teammates with your rounds, and not just explosives. That means that one second you could have a totally capable sniper, only for them to turn into Caboose and blast your team in the back. Then your bullets shred through your team like a hot knife through butter. I found myself quoting Red Vs Blue season 6 by saying "Church: Caboose, she's on our team you should help her!" Caboose: "Okay!" The damage you do to enemies is very low, even if they don't have armor, but they can two-shot you, and you can two-shot or even one-shot your teammates! If the enemy has you in overwatch you can do NOTHING because your move WILL be interrupted, so staying together is a death sentence. As Warhounds is now on 8/24/2026, I'd give the game a 5/10. Again the ONLY reason I'm giving a thumbs up is because the devs ARE trying. Hopefully they make it better.
I really want to love the game, however, there are a few things that needs to be addressed and what did it for me is that there is glaring use of generative AI for the artwork... I got this game because they claimed to do away with the XCOM RNG method of determining hits and it was a military/realistic theme to the genre which is a main reason to get this game. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing it for the first 10 hours, but over time the issues reveal themselves. For one there have been times where RNG is present, and of course it is going to be present in a game like this, however, after a while it does feel like a bit of a lie that the game is not RNG focused and more on positioning and tactics, especially when that is the selling point in the game. Such a thing can be glanced over, however, there is a huge issue with the art. Art wise, people say it just seems like a generic clone of XCOM and it really does feel like that with generic looking character assets and art assets, and I wish there was a more stylistic art approach instead of uncanny generic character assets. The Voice acting for some of the character is just TERRIBLE, at first it is starting off strong, but then over time meeting more characters in the story, their voice just does not match! You cant say that a black market dealer sounds like some wimpy high school student in the united states, or a leader of the Da'amat movement sounds like some random guy plucked from a random street. All of these can be forgiven but the one thing I can't forgive is blatant use of AI for ALL of your art assets and it becomes more apparent as the game goes by, and there is not even an AI disclaimer on the store page! So I am disappointed in the game and part of me wants to drop it and just play XCOM. I will give certain game mechanic props in the use of armor and scratch mechanics, which are good points, but in the end I was expecting more and it was an immediate turn off when I noticed the generative AI. TL;DR Just play XCOM, this game uses generative AI and gameplay is basically the same
Feels like a game you can play for an evening, put away for a month, and then jump right back in without struggling to remember the controls or what you were supposed to do. It might not be a 100+ hour title, but I’m definitely keeping it on my desktop. And yeah, please fix the crashes. They don’t ruin the progress, but it is annoying.
8/10 - I absolutely love this game. Its charming and fun. Hope this becomes a franchise. The more I play, the more I find a appreciation for the passion put into this project. -As I understand so far I am playing towards egalitarian/egocentric outcomes of this part of Africa, with hard choices to support brutal capitalism or autocracy or brutal communism. Both RPG choices in who to support and who what missions you play may impact game resolution? -All races found as allies and enemies, not sure what other reviews were speaking of. -Bugs, thankfully saves every round because I've had a few crashes, (loading mission, reloading in map), also a few needs to reload due to hangs sitting on enemy turn unable to resolve something (during enemy turns with or without overwatch on them), but overall a good experience with good mechanics. -The enemy AI is stupid often, runs back to forth allowing some exploitation by player but the gameplay is good. The AI does make good use of cover though which is really nice. -The camera is janky at times and its hard to tell who is selected as well, many times I have moved the wrong character thinking I had clicked on the one I wanted to move playing at 2k. -The story is good. Voice acting is good enough, especially considering the likely budget. -Scratches the ich. -Somewhere between XCOM/Chimera squad and Jagged Alliance, I felt right at home and had a few laughs so far. I genuinely would be proud of making this game. Supporting good projects like this is where some of the best franchises began. The game is good, and I wish the team success.
Great turn based xcom style game. Loving it. Reveals more as you play.
At the moment, I wouldn't recommend the game, I found that loading a save can crash it, continuing from main menu can crash it, and reloading a save while in mission can also crash the game. And reloading the save to test out if a 50% will miss with no cover just distance ended up missing 9/10 times is quite disheartening, just stick to grenade tactics. Balance wise? I don't think a commander unit telling someone who had no armor getting shot point blank in the head(Crit) with a shotgun or a machine gun should be able to stand up and climb a ladder like the prior decapitation was a flesh wound but hey maybe its a physics base thing. If you want an XCOM like game, try their beta Sparta 2035 first or wait for the more crash related bugs to be sorted out or patched.
