About
Warhounds is a turn-based tactical & strategy game, inspired by XCOM and Jagged Alliance, about a mercenary squad with an old-school action movie vibe. Command an elite team of bold, stylish operators, wage a campaign in an alternate-future Africa, and decide the war’s outcome mission by mission.
Calculate lines of fire and flank angle, break cover, and seize the high ground. Every turn is decided more by your planning and tactics, less - by RNG.
Combine classes: Assault, Specialist, Sniper, Machine Gunner, and Grenadier. Pick the right gear for the job, treat and extract, and protect key operatives. Take calculated risks. High combat lethality makes every decision count.
Recruit, upgrade, purchase equipment, and handle logistics, finances, medical supplies, and downtime. Choose allied factions, build relationships, gather intel, and execute covert ops. Your choices have consequences: your decisions determine your access to missions, gear, and allies.
Deploy drones, combat scanners, smoke, and optical camo. Upgrade and improve your kit to win under any conditions.
Knock out a mission in 25-40 minutes, or settle in for a long session. Customize the challenge: go for a brutal tactical hell or a light, relaxing run.
No point-blank misses - flank + close distance = 100% hit chance.
Real ballistics, destructible cover, vertical gameplay, and cone overwatch.
Mercenaries with character and mission-focused loadouts without any busywork.
Base management, contracts, budgets, allies, and consequences for your actions.
Assemble your squad. Take the contract. Decide Africa’s future beyond 2035.

Reviews
For me this is basically: 1. XCOM's readability 2. JA3's military/mercenary flavor 3. some Gears Tactics-style visibility 4. a more flexible AP system with indie-level polish. And honestly? I'm okay with that.
It auto configured my settings ... but the game was dropping frames constantly. And whatever it auto-configured was not good looking anyway. Its a bad reskin of Sparta 2035. EDIT: posted hardware settings. Going to refund, the game just clunks ... bad camera controls, tactics are weak, feels slow, performance is stuttering, and hard to control. the wobbly wierd camera action during cut-scenes makes yah feel sick. Plus all da bugs, right? Buggy enough that you really should have released to Early Access first.

Not recommended. Especially not recommended if the info in other reviews about Russian state sponsorship, Russian propaganda, and possible profit funneling back to the Russian government, is all true. I haven't verified this info myself, but I'm seeing it everywhere on Steam, Reddit, and other sources, so I am taking it seriously. I can't in good conscience support anything funded by or connected to the Russian government. Aside from that, there are many finer alternatives for turn-based tactics. Menace is a new one that I enjoyed far more than this game. Warhounds feels like a Temu version of the new Jagged Alliance, so do yourself a favor and just buy the new Jagged Alliance. For the regular price of $40, you can mostly pay for the new Star Wars Zero Company game which is what I'll be doing with the refund I got from this.
Saludos
ya'll, it is xcom/ja3 in one. if you liked those games, you'll like this as well. i beat it in 62 hrs

I truly cherish every new turn-based tactical game available on the market today, as this genre has nearly disappeared. This positive review is certainly intended to encourage developers to achieve greater sales, which in turn could help revive such games. Overall, however, Warhounds is merely a solid 7 out of 10 turn-based tactical experience. Is it an evolved version of XCOM2? I can't say for sure. But given that XCOM2 has already been released over a decade ago, calling it an evolution might not be high praise. I would recommend it to players who deeply love tactical games, but if your interest in the genre isn't particularly strong, you might want to wait and see before deciding. Pros:

The game features highly distinct classes for mercenaries, which is its standout characteristic. Melee soldiers' ultimate attacks, snipers' impact on overall strategy, support troops with seemingly endless healing and powerful utility skills, and explosive specialists who can detonate cars without mercy—there's definitely a class you'll love and want to develop, making this one of the best aspects of character customization in the game.
The overall difficulty is quite balanced, at least from my perspective as someone who enjoys standard mode. There are no so-called "nuisance monsters" here; even late-game Quad 9 warriors, despite their high attack and defense, can be taken down one by one by elite melee fighters and snipers if you play tactically—you can clear stages without taking damage. (Though I'm not sure what happens in hard mode when melee soldiers get counterattacked... haha.)
Cons:

Crashes — During my first playthrough, I experienced over ten crashes. Every time I loaded a save file, it would crash again.
Flexibility — As mentioned above, late-game Quad 9 warriors have extremely high attack and defense; a single large-scale attack can wipe out your entire team. Without long-range elimination or instant kill abilities, you're doomed. Therefore, overall, the build flexibility is relatively low.
AI — Mainly during the final battle,
the only fight where you fight alongside your allies. Your ally will draw enemies toward you, then hesitate back and forth behind you before finally sniping your own sniper in the head with a single shot.

Base Construction and Related Mechanics – During the beta phase, I was quite excited about the base-building system in this game. However, in the final version, base construction is limited to merely unlocking functions, with nearly all items requiring purchase. While players who aren't interested in base building might appreciate this design, for me it feels overly monotonous.
Level Design – The maps lack distinct identities, which diminishes their potential strategic depth. I essentially used the same team composition from start to finish, even though there could have been more variety. Massed grunts? A few elite enemies? Long-range sniping? Close combat? High offense? Low defense? Perhaps the developers had these ideas in mind, but the final product fails to deliver a clear sense of difference.
Character Customization – Well, I have to say, it's hard to believe that character customization doesn't include class progression or background story editing. The Workshop in XCOM2 already demonstrated how essential such features are.
Supported Languages – .
Excellent game play like X-com series. This is the Africa version of X-com 2. One of the best turn based tactics game.
Granted, I am just a few hours in, but MAN. There has been a looooong dry spell between Jagged 2 and Jagged 3. JA3 is absolutely GOD tier. Probably my favorite PC game ever. I have also been an XCOM player ever since the game that started it all and it was actually called UFO. It is so rare to find good TBS titles. I mean, over 30 years you can count them on one hand. Is this game perfect? No. Is it as good as XCOM2 or JA3? Well, that will depend on your preferences. I am shocked that for a more "budget game" it comes this close. There is no doubt that I will sink countless hours into this and I can't wait to see how the game evolves, both in its campaign, as well as with DLC. So glad I found this. And what a time to be alive. Both warhounds and Z-Com launching the same month? Guess I won't be sleeping much...
