About
Warhounds is a turn-based tactical & strategy game, inspired by XCOM and Jagged Alliance, about a mercenary squad with an old-school action movie vibe. Command an elite team of bold, stylish operators, wage a campaign in an alternate-future Africa, and decide the war’s outcome mission by mission.
Calculate lines of fire and flank angle, break cover, and seize the high ground. Every turn is decided more by your planning and tactics, less - by RNG.
Combine classes: Assault, Specialist, Sniper, Machine Gunner, and Grenadier. Pick the right gear for the job, treat and extract, and protect key operatives. Take calculated risks. High combat lethality makes every decision count.
Recruit, upgrade, purchase equipment, and handle logistics, finances, medical supplies, and downtime. Choose allied factions, build relationships, gather intel, and execute covert ops. Your choices have consequences: your decisions determine your access to missions, gear, and allies.
Deploy drones, combat scanners, smoke, and optical camo. Upgrade and improve your kit to win under any conditions.
Knock out a mission in 25-40 minutes, or settle in for a long session. Customize the challenge: go for a brutal tactical hell or a light, relaxing run.
No point-blank misses - flank + close distance = 100% hit chance.
Real ballistics, destructible cover, vertical gameplay, and cone overwatch.
Mercenaries with character and mission-focused loadouts without any busywork.
Base management, contracts, budgets, allies, and consequences for your actions.
Assemble your squad. Take the contract. Decide Africa’s future beyond 2035.

Reviews
Had a crash, got annoyed, came back five minutes later. That's probably the best review I can give this game.
Very old-school tactics vibe. Familiar mechanics, simple systems, satisfying combat. Not revolutionary, just fun.

It's good game. I really like the mechanics, if you shoot someone in the face with a shotgun from 1 meter, they die. Which is an improvement from other games like this and makes sense. I think the maps need more variety, it feels always the same. The quest could be improved, it feels repetive. All in all, the game is good at it's basics, what matters is good. If they make some improvement with vareity and add a couple of things, this could be a very good game.
The first few tutorial missions gave me the wrong impression. I thought the combat was extremely basic. Then I started experimenting with AP. You can make these little tactical sequences that feel completely different from the standard “move + action” structure. My favorite is still rushing forward, shooting and getting back behind cover. Feels like something you shouldn't be allowed to do, but apparently the game says “sure, why not”
Graphics are nothing special, but honestly I don't care much once the shooting starts. The tactics are doing the heavy lifting here.
Launch was rough for me. Had several crashes during my first sessions and was seriously considering a refund. Decided to wait for the first patches because I actually liked the combat. Good decision. The latest hotfix fixed the crashes on my machine completely. Haven't had one since. Still plenty of stuff I'd like improved, but at least now I'm spending my time complaining about balance instead of crashes. 😂
To clarify: Positive reviews serve to influence buyers and provide self-affirmation. Negative reviews serve as constructive criticism and thus aid further development! - With a German voiceover, as in XCOM 1+2 for example, it would be much more intense. Naturally, when the language is different, as it is here, I turn the sound off. However, voices account for 80 per cent of the experience in films. The same applies to games. I won’t accept the hackneyed excuse that there’s no money for it. Because if that’s the case, it wasn’t developed for the German market and shouldn’t be sold there either. The voice-over is essential in some games, such as this one! Furthermore, some of the images have been generated by AI. So why not have the voice-over generated by AI as well? - On the map, houses and trees are a nuisance because you can’t see through them, or because they only clear slowly. - I’d like to change the angle to a bird’s-eye view, as the walls sometimes make it difficult to place your unit in the right spot. - If you complete a mission but there are still trophies nearby, they aren’t added to the mission loot. - Save is on the right, Cancel on the left. It should be the other way round. Presumably a way of insisting on imposing one’s will on others. Oh well… - Cargo hold – All the icons look the same. It’s incredibly confusing. - Some soldiers (veterans) cannot be customised in the changing room. - The cutscene leading into and out of a mission cannot be skipped using the ESC key. Instead, you have to hold down the space bar for a loooooong time. An unnecessary waste of time. - The maps are too small. - Only four soldiers in action. A tactical game thrives on complexity. - If a soldier kills four enemies, they get 45 XP. And a soldier who hasn’t killed anyone gets 40 XP. - Characters aren’t always freely selectable on the map. The only solution is to select the character icon on the left. - In the ‘Warbounds’ folder, there is a ‘Save’ folder containing the save files, and a ‘SaveData’ folder containing exactly the same files. However, this may also be down to Proton (GE-Proton11-5x86_64). - Da’amat’s power increases no matter which mission I successfully complete. There’s no explanation for this either. As it’s very similar to XCOM, such a power bar should decrease as missions are completed. But it doesn’t. I read in a post that you can ignore the bar. I’ll find out soon whether this is true. - Soldier surveillance isn’t working properly yet. If one of my soldiers is being watched by an enemy and I’m standing on a white square or an adjacent one with another soldier, it triggers as soon as I move. - No XCOM dice – with a 100 per cent chance of hitting, you’ll always hit. - The music is fitting. - It's fun. Updates to follow as the game progresses! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vielen Dank an alle Linux-Entwickler!!! In Spielen ebenso.
Great game! Plays like Xcom: Enemy Unknown! I was hoping for a new game like that for a long time! Cheers!!
i you like xcom. you would like this one
Unfortunately i can't really review the game itself. It crashes so often during launch, that i didn't even get to enjoy the crashes during gameplay. I certainly expect a lot more than this from a 1.0 release. refunding
