This is going to be long and nitpicky from a non-40k fan, if you're a die hard 40k guy you'll probably slurp down the corpo 40k slop like a good consumer so buy it and move on. As a sequel to Space Marine 1 this game looks beautiful but that's about it. Everything about game flow, balance, characterization, and sound design feels underdone and made "good enough" compared to areas in the first game that whilst lacking the fidelity of a modern release, were done with far more care and effort. The most glaring example for most gamers is probably going to be the loading screens. In Space Marine 1 they took care to seamlessly integrate loading screens into the flow of the campaign, with long elevators, defense sections, and exposition filled hallway walks that built out the background of the world. This was done so that the campaign felt like a seamless, continuous adventure that was constantly escalating. In Space Marine 2, the elevators and hallways are still there, but on top of it you have a loading screen that rips you out of the game and reminds you none of this is real. The story tries to built stakes and flesh itself out, but the pacing is consistently ruined by the game returning you to a hub, a design choice that's come to dominate all corporate feeling cooperative games of the 2020s. You never feel like a soldier feeling with a long day of endless horrors, you never feel like you're embarking an arduous march like the first game, instead you feel like a little kid who's going back home after a day at school, you get on your space marine school bus and go back to your college dorm where your fellow marines talk about you outside of your door as if the battle barge is a Disney XD T.V. set. Weapons and abilities are very obviously designed around multiplayer balance, The game flow of encountering increasing brutality and lethality from the Orks as they carry out a genocidal campaign of unadulterated industrial warfare across Graia, where each weapon cache is crafted to either introduce a new gameplay element be it the verticality of the towering habblocks where you temporarily get to use a jump pack, or the harsh Stalingrad evoking streets full of entrenched Orks where you're introduced to the Las cannon, all of that is gone. Instead weapons are scattered everywhere without thought, a sea as shallow as a puddle where every bolter is designed to not stand out from the rest, lest balance (for a multiplayer mode that a fan of the first game is likely not even looking for) be thrown off! You will not experience a wealth of weapons of increasing strength and lethality, instead you'll be forced to swap between weapons for overly situational dungeons. Weapon spread and sound design is worse as well. Space Marine 2 very obviously wants you to use melee, it's a game where they have ranged weapons, but you can tell the devs don't actually want you using them that much. Every weapon you can use sounds less lethal than the weapons in Space Marine 1. The plasma pistol has been demoted from sounding like someone summoned a whole data center from hell to sounding like a generic energy based pea shooter. Bolters no longer sound like a thrown together boxy rocket launcher designed to kill without thought, instead it sounds like someone with bad speakers in the back of their old 1994 Acura Integra. Weapons fire with the precision of a disabled kid playing T-ball. The stalker bolter, once a laser beam of death that let you feel like a cybernetic SWAT team member crossed with an anime sniper assassin is now a musket if you don't zoom in. In the 41st millennium the cream of the crop for the Imperium has less training in point shooting than the starving masses of the British infantry who fought in Verdun in 1916. Abilities are balanced, no longer can you morph into a catholic space fascist fueled by the pure hatred of the fact that the universe has put something disgusting, like a green British football fan, in front of your eyes along with the means to kill it. Instead you get a "Q" ability, all of which have short use times and long cool downs, all of which are balanced around multiplayer. If you're the main character you get to get really angry for just long enough to maybe kill 1 enemy, and you won't feel much as the enemies in this game have no personality, they're just insect lizards with a generic science fiction hivemind, and not even one that taunts you. Aesthetics are different as well. Gone as the large environments that evoke monumentalism, instead it's replaced by some of the most beautiful textures you'll ever see and endless fog. The endless satire of being hit over the head with horrible apartments, workplace supervisors demanding comically unsafe conditions, and a military organization that actively hates its own men almost as much as the enemy is largely gone, or at least shoved behind the curtains where only dedicated fans and players could find it. Instead the Imperium are shown as cartoon space knights who go back to their cool clubhouse in the sky after they beat the evil supervillain, unnamed lizard hive man! Overall, the game feels corporate. Corporate can be nice at times but if you're looking for art, for soul, for the game to have anything to say with its story telling you won't find it. There's no tale of self-sabotaging fascist knights, where you can tell through game design that the only thing this society puts effort into is their weapons which even still are not enough to prevent their self made enemies from closing in. There's no map's designed around giving the player comically powerful method of destroying their enemies before it's taken away. Even the space marines are different, with the Darth Vader styled uniform helmets being replaced by a generic corporate looking edgy hero helmet. Every soldier is personalized, gone is the scene from Space Marine 1, where legions of supersoldiers with their identity stripped away arive to help you fight a problem you caused. Instead everyone has a personality, in the 41st millennium the evil fascist empire is apparently really involved in self expression for their soldiers. The same organization that kills most of its recruits and turns the survivors into unthinking, barely Human killing machines is also concerned with making sure everyone armor looks like an 8th grade girls notebook, covered in stickers and doodles. Overall, I expect more out of games. This game is why games will only get worse and more expensive, it's why you will rent and own nothing, it's good reviews mean the care that went into something like Halo 3 will never be replicated by big studios ever again.

For a horde killing game, I sure am getting the short end of the rape stick
Mega für Crossplay. Das Spiel war zum Launch schon richtig gut. Jetzt ist es einfach nur Fantastisch. Und bis jetzt ist die Community superfreundlich zu Beginnern und neuen Spielern.
I played this right after finishing the first game for the first time and the sequel is a massive improvement on the original. The foundation of both games are the same. Even the story is pretty similar. The controls, guns, linear action and all that are the same. Space Marine 2, however, ups the brutality and gore and makes executions FUN to do! The enemies imo are better than the first game. Not only are they more interesting, they look better and feel funner to shoot. Only downside in this game is that it's pretty short. I wanna say the campaign is around 7ish hours long. Maybe less. I did try operations (multiplayer story that takes place during the events of the main campaign) with a couple friends afterward but honestly, the operations aren't as fun as the base game. I'm not sure exactly why, just that it didn't feel as good to play. So I HIGHLY recommend for the singleplayer campaign!
