Initial Thoughts: Released back in 2004, Dawn of War is a solid RTS from its era, but it is very much a product of its time. Right out of the gate, the game does not offer native 1920x1080 resolution support. I didn't bother wasting time looking for community workarounds for it, although from what I’ve read, the Definitive Edition available on Steam does have those features available in it. You should definitely consider that version instead if you are trying to get into this game today. Story and Presentation: The game doesn't ease you into the story or the massive Warhammer universe at all. To be fair, I am not incredibly familiar with the lore of this franchise; my only real exposure prior to this was Warhammer 40k: FireWarrior on the PlayStation 2. The writers keep the story very vague at the start; you're essentially dropped right into the game without being provided any backstory to get you acclimated to what’s going on. The campaign missions themselves are really straightforward: you move from point A to point B, killing everything along the way. You unlock new units the deeper you progress in the campaign, so it's not reinventing the wheel as far as RTS progression is concerned. Once the storyline actually starts to develop, it feels very similar to the Human campaign from Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos. The main campaign leaves you hanging on a cliffhanger, because there are three separate expansions available that continue the plot if you feel so inclined, which is another reason why you should probably just grab the Definitive Edition instead of the base game; as it includes those expansions, and the base game only has 11 missions. Gameplay and Unit Control: If you've ever played the Company of Heroes series and are coming back to this game with no prior experience with Dawn of War like me, the mechanics here will feel incredibly familiar. That makes total sense, considering Dawn of War predates CoH by two years and served as the testing ground for those mechanics. Units are built into entire squads rather than individual soldiers. You manage and upgrade these squads on the fly, giving them the ability to throw grenades, attaching a sergeant or a powerful hero to lead them, or swapping out their loadouts with heavy weapons like bolter guns, flamethrowers, plasma rifles, and missile launchers. However, the units are a little clunky, worse than Company of Heroes, and they are constantly fighting the game's pathfinding. Basic movement commands that work well in era-peers like Warcraft 3 or Age of Empires II just fall apart here. If you order eight squads to attack an area, half of them will get physically stuck in the rear because the front-line units halt movement as soon as they can engage, this blocks the path for everyone behind them to get in the fight. It forces a tedious amount of unnecessary micromanagement just to keep your army moving forward. Your troops do fight while they move, which helps, but I feel like this easily could have been fixed by allowing friendly units to pass transparently through each other. Vehicles are also an absolute nightmare to control; they take bizarre, unnecessary turns and pivots just to travel where a straight line would have worked just fine. To top it off, individual squad models will sometimes randomly decide to wander away from the rest of their group. It will irritate you. Still, when everything is moving, watching the firefights play out is genuinely a good time. The units are unique, fun, powerful, and just all around really cool to look at and watch fight. Graphics and Sound: For a game that dropped in 2004, the graphics aren’t horrible. The unit models look cool in combat, even if you are forced to play at an older aspect ratio. But the absolute standout element here is the music. The soundtrack is epic and carries a very holy, grand sound that heavily mirrors the Warcraft 3 Human themes. I absolutely loved it. The developers also included an Army Painter feature that lets you fully customize and paint your own units for skirmishes and online play. This is an awesome touch that clearly comes from a place of love for the franchise material. Even with the little knowledge of the franchise I have, I know tabletop Warhammer fans put a lot of time into painting their miniatures, and seeing that hobby honored inside the video game is awesome. Final Thoughts: Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War is a good RTS, but its pathfinding issues and awkward unit behavior keep it from being a top game in the RTS genre even for its era. I would recommend you play Warcraft 3, Age of Empires 3, Age of Mythology, or Command & Conquer: Generals before I recommend this to you. It is a weird mesh of StarCraft, Warcraft 3, and Company of Heroes that is worth a playthrough if you have the patience to babysit all the clunk. Score: 7.0/10
