I got it on deep sale, and it's worth the $5 for a fun tactics game. I think I would have been disappointed if I bought this on release. The difficulty curve is very strange. I played on Ruthless, and early game is crushingly difficult, which is good. At one time my entire roster of knights was wounded and needed to be repeatedly cycled into battle. By late game though, most of the time I was defeating enemy pods without them even having the chance to take an action; this was mostly through the use of the Librarian group teleport and the absolutely broken mechanic that is stunning / executing / gaining AP on your entire group. Between that and regain AP on crit abilities, I would sometimes end turns with more AP than I started with. This flips around when you get to the final boss fight, which is somewhat difficult again, though this is only because it is around 5x longer than any other mission in the game so your WP and grenades run out super early in the fight and you have to rely on more sustainable abilities. It was nice that the game ended with a fight that was actually threatening though.
I'm new to the tactical rpg genre, and enjoyed the gameplay as well as the preparing for battle strategies.
GG great game
So much potential, that for me was ruined by exactly one thing: there are five 'versions' of the threat you're facing. They're all effectively identical. Fancy descriptions with fascinating implications, that play out as nothing more than altering the types of buffs the enemies get and debuffs you get as time goes on. These buffs and debuffs aren't even particularly significant. You feel them, sure, but they aren't game changers by any means no matter which 'version' you're up against. In effect, you go through a large amount of the game with the first version, discovering every enemy type and mission type, and then with a grand reveal you unlock the other four, and... nothing much changes. No new enemies, no (or just very few -- I may have come across one that was new, or it may just be rare) new mission types, not even visual differences for the most part. What a waste of a great concept. I love everything about the first part of the game, but seeing that the majority of the game is just going to be more of the same, over and over and over... that's not worth my time.
This is a hidden gem in the turn-based tactics genre. There's a surprising amount of depth to the skills and combat scenarios. However, this does mean the difficulty is very high unless you interact with all that depth, and the learning curve can be steep. Each mission will see your team of 4 Grey Knights against a much larger force of plague-ridden foes. You have 3 actions per knight each round, which you can use in any combination of moves, attacks, and skills. You also don't need to use all 3 actions at once, allowing you to switch characters between actions to better combo between them. I played most missions with a group of 4 different classes, giving a large variety of skills to adapt to each situation. It was common to kill ~10 enemies in a single turn, giving a very satisfying feeling of taking on overwhelming forces and living to tell the tale. The armour system is interesting, where you regenerate armour between turns. This means you'll be trying to spread enemy damage across your units. As a result, unit positioning is everything. Save scumming is inevitable though, as one round with poor positioning can make a mission go sideways very quickly, and with missions frequently taking an hour to play you won't want to start over. One of the more unique features is the death system. Downed knights only die permanently after being downed in multiple missions. They even recover with mechanical augments that improve their stats after being downed. This turns sacrificing a knight or two to complete the objective into a big-brain move. By mid campaign the resource gathering missions do get repetitive, and the 40 hour campaign is no small undertaking. The UI can be a bit clunky, and the difficulty will not be everyone's idea of fun. That said, I had a fantastic time and would recommend it to fans of turn-based tactics games. Maybe don't use this as your first foray into the genre though.
Xcom but more forgiving with umproved QoL features. Lacking a little in variety but presented lovely and runs great. Long playthrough provides value.
If you like X-com style games and 40k, it's a solid pick. Of course if either of those are not your thing, then it's probably not for you.
