Truly a great great classic but please include the versions for Commodore 64 Amiga and Atari ST and Atari home computer please!!! And how about Workshop?
If you haven't played back in the stone age, and are looking for some fun classic gameplay, don't bother. The game is very classic, which means it is barebones, and you need to read the manual first, which explains how to play it.
Yes.

Puh, I have absolutly no idea what to do here. A game from the prehistoric era of the medium, only recommended for IT archaeologists.
Wargame Construction Set is the kind of classic computer strategy title that immediately reveals how ambitious early game developers were despite severe technological limitations. Developed by Strategic Simulations and republished on Steam by SNEG, the game represents a fascinating era when creativity and depth mattered more than presentation. While many modern strategy games focus on cinematic campaigns, dramatic storytelling, and visually overwhelming battlefields, this title comes from a period where the player’s imagination filled the gaps left by primitive graphics and limited sound design. What makes Wargame Construction Set so enduring is not simply that it functions as a turn-based tactical game, but that it also acts as a fully customizable military sandbox that allows players to become designers themselves. The core gameplay revolves around hex-based tactical warfare where positioning, terrain management, unit strength, and long-term planning are far more important than reflexes or rapid commands. Battles unfold methodically, rewarding players who think several turns ahead rather than relying on brute force. Every movement across the map carries weight because terrain elevation, defensive placement, and attack ranges can completely alter the outcome of a confrontation. Unlike many modern strategy titles that bombard players with constant action, Wargame Construction Set embraces patience and tactical discipline. The slower pace may initially feel intimidating or outdated to newcomers, but once the systems begin to click, the game reveals an incredibly satisfying strategic foundation that remains surprisingly compelling decades after its original release. What truly separates the game from many other classic wargames is the remarkable amount of creative freedom it provides. The construction tools are not treated as a secondary feature or minor bonus mode. They are the heart of the experience. Players can design maps, customize unit statistics, alter battlefield conditions, and create completely original scenarios spanning numerous eras of warfare. Ancient combat, medieval battles, modern mechanized conflicts, and even fictional wars can all exist within the same framework. This flexibility gives the game almost endless replay value because players are not restricted to the developer’s predefined content. Instead, they are encouraged to experiment constantly, testing ideas and building battles according to their own imagination. The editor itself feels surprisingly robust considering the game’s age. While modern players may initially struggle with the old-school interface, there is an undeniable sense of accomplishment that comes from learning its systems. The menus are practical rather than elegant, prioritizing utility over aesthetics. Once players adapt to the controls, the process of creating maps and balancing units becomes genuinely engaging. There is a certain charm in how direct and uncompromising the design philosophy feels. The game assumes players are willing to learn through experimentation, and in return it offers a level of customization that was incredibly advanced for its era. The included scenarios provide a strong demonstration of the engine’s versatility. Some battles focus on small tactical engagements while others emphasize larger military operations requiring careful coordination across the battlefield. Because the game mechanics are built around calculated movement and attrition rather than flashy animations, victories feel earned rather than scripted. Success often comes from understanding terrain advantages, predicting enemy movement, and making efficient use of limited resources. Even though the AI occasionally shows its age with predictable behaviors, the overall strategic challenge remains satisfying thanks to the depth of the underlying systems. Visually, Wargame Construction Set is undeniably primitive by contemporary standards. The battlefield graphics are simplistic, the menus are extremely utilitarian, and the presentation lacks the polish modern audiences are accustomed to. However, retro strategy fans will likely appreciate the straightforward clarity of the design. There is very little unnecessary visual clutter, and the game’s minimalist appearance allows players to focus entirely on tactical planning. The sound design is similarly basic, offering little more than functional audio feedback, but this simplicity somehow fits the game’s identity. It feels less like an entertainment spectacle and more like a digital tabletop war simulator. One of the most fascinating aspects of revisiting Wargame Construction Set today is recognizing how influential its ideas were. Long before modding communities became common and before user-generated content became a major industry feature, this game already embraced the concept of player creativity as a core mechanic. It empowered players to build their own experiences rather than simply consume developer-made content. In many ways, it foreshadowed the future of customization in strategy gaming. Modern editors, scenario creators, and community workshop systems all owe something to games like this that pioneered the idea decades earlier. The Steam release by SNEG also deserves praise for preserving an important piece of strategy gaming history. Without rereleases like this, many influential classics risk fading into obscurity due to compatibility issues and aging software. Being able to experience Wargame Construction Set on modern hardware allows both longtime veterans and curious newcomers to explore a title that played a meaningful role in the evolution of computer wargaming. While the game absolutely shows its age, its design ambition remains impressive even today. Naturally, the experience is not perfect. Players expecting modern conveniences may become frustrated with the dated interface, lack of tutorials, and old-school pacing. The game requires patience and a willingness to adapt to older design philosophies that prioritize complexity over accessibility. Some battles can feel slow, and the AI lacks the sophistication of contemporary tactical games. Yet these shortcomings are easier to accept when considering the era in which the game was created. Wargame Construction Set was attempting something extraordinarily ambitious at a time when most games were far more limited in scope. Ultimately, Wargame Construction Set succeeds because it captures the joy of strategic experimentation. It is not merely about winning battles but about crafting them, studying them, and reshaping them according to your own ideas. Few games offer this degree of creative ownership, especially from such an early period in gaming history. For retro enthusiasts, hardcore strategy fans, and players interested in the roots of tactical game design, this title remains both historically fascinating and genuinely enjoyable. It stands as a reminder that imagination and flexibility can sometimes outlast graphical technology and modern production values. Rating: 7/10
