It was alright I enjoyed the art a lot and the general vibe n such were fun. Im a big fan of looter shooters so i enjoyed runnin around and stealing all the loot i could find. Combat was alright, some weapons felt a bit off but nothing major. Though the shocker speficially was too powerful. Because of how tough and everpresent robot enemies are (turrets, cameras and security robots), the fact it has a much longer stun duration for them and the fact that you can very easily just stun any enemy and run away - it was basically a must have for 80% of the levels. Enemy variety was neat, though by the later stages it does use recolors of previous enemies as stronger versions which i always find a bit lame, but seeing as all the enemy sprites are 2D art, drawn from 8 directions for most of the animations, it makes sense. I do think the game starts to drag on by the end but luckily with good resource managment you can basically skip to wherever you need to be. The roguelite aspects were kinda whatever. I fully died only a single time and the setback is so nothing that i feel like they could have dropped that aspect and just made you lose some resources instead. And the ending may be a bit anticlimatic. You just beat yet another regular level to get the last part you need and then it just ends. You unlock challenges after that but i think ive had my fill. Overall if you can grab it on sale id say its a pretty good looter shooter for the value.

Void Bastards is like diving headfirst into a cosmic whirlpool of hilarity and chaos. It's like if you mixed the strategic depth of a space opera with the wacky humor of a Monty Python skit. Imagine you're the commander of a ragtag group of space misfits, each with their own quirks. You're cruising through the Sargasso Nebula, scavenging derelict spaceships for loot while dodging killer robots and mutant aliens. It's like a sci-fi survival horror meets a sitcom, and somehow, it just works. First off, let's talk about the visuals. The game's comic book-inspired art direction is a breath of fresh air, with vibrant colors and stylish character designs that leap off the screen. Every derelict spaceship you explore feels like a page ripped straight from a sci-fi graphic novel, and it's an aesthetic that's sure to leave a lasting impression. But Void Bastards isn't just eye candy - it can be also really fun to play. The combination of strategic decision-making and fast-paced combat keeps you on your toes at all times. Whether you're carefully planning your next move or engaging in adrenaline-fueled firefights with hordes of enemies, it's not getting dull since there are always things to craft & upgrade for which you'll be willing to visit the most deadly places of the comix galaxy. And let's not forget about the humor. "Void Bastards" is packed with witty dialogue, clever writing, and laugh-out-loud moments that add an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience. It's a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, and that sense of levity is part of what makes it so endearing. Overall, Void Bastards with its unique art style and challenging gameplay is a title that for sure may keep you entertained for hours on end.
I tried this game for the first time four years ago. All I remember is getting repeatedly killed very quickly. I came back to it eventually, and decided to lower the difficulty because I forgot everything by now. It took me a few attempts, but eventually I learned that Void Bastards is not an action shooter (I know...I know). You can shoot, you will shoot, but the main point of the game is to go in ships, loot what you need, and get out. How you do it is mostly up to you, and many tools will answer effectively to most threats in the game. Eventually you learn how the rooms work, what each rooms provides, how to deal with enemies you don't want to fight, etc, etc... It is a fun experience, and while all the ships designs can feel samey with the exception of their colors and decorations, I think it's not a bad thing because it help to figure out how to route yourself inside ships with just the map at the start. The art style was what made me buy the game immediately back then, only to be turned off by the fact that I had to use my brain. I still love the overall comic book aspect, and the humor centered around corporate being corporate in a sea of derelict vessels is not lost on me. The weakest point of the game would be the enemy design: On paper they're all different. But really in execution you have: - enemies that explode. - enemies that shoot at you. that's it. The way they do it vary, and Zecs have a front shield which ""should"" usually challenge you for smarter plays, but really once you find a sure way to bypass that they go back to be "a shooting enemy", just a more annoying one. 2nd point that annoys me to hell and back is the jump: it's not good. I can jump over most obstacles in the game, but it'd never be on my first try. Too close to the object and the jump is stunted, too far and it's slip right in front of it. The jump just need to have a slightly higher apex and it'd already be better. Also while you can jump above electric cable, jumping over any other type of hazard will do nothing. To the point that you'd just run past them if you can tank them. Overall I did enjoy my time with it, once I figured out what I was supposed to do to begin with. It can be a very satisfying loop, and there's variety in the way you'd tackle each ships and their "citizens". I'd recommend it on sale, because there's just a feeling that it misses a little something extra to wrap the experience neatly, it just feels incomplete imo.
(Okay I wrote this review not realizing the game was $30. I'm not sure its worth $30, I got this in a bundle and I beat the game in 12 hours. Thats pretty weak value per dollar as far as video games go. I didnt 100% the content, as there are various difficulty modifiers, but I didnt see much point to playing after clearing the main story. That being said, whats here is okay, but I wouldnt pay more than $15~ ish given its length.) Game play is pretty good. Its a Rogue Lite where you take 3 weapons or utilities into various ships to fight randomized enemies and security emplacements while looting as much as you possibly can before your health, ammo or air runs out. For 90% of the game I found the writing to be entertaining, theres a very light story line to give some level of framework for the setting and to establish some goals for the player to accomplish and to incentivize deeper exploration of the nebula. The story is a black comedy where in hyper capitalist ideals and bureaucratic red tape have comoditized human life. Its narrated by the guy who did Stanley Parable and I found the idle chatter passably funny and the never ending obstacles when navigating a bureaucratic process incredibly relatable. I'd have given this game a 8/10 normally but the ending of this game is pretty terrible. Without spoiling any details, it made the entire game feel pointless. It fit with the theme but I prefer to feel rewarded at the end of a game. Tldr 7/10 gameplay 6/10 story 4/10 value per dollar (at full price)
Beautiful art style, good mechanics and ammo managing mechanics, famous narrator, great story. I find myself not easy to be impressed, but this game is a breath of fresh air! Love it.
I wasn't sure what genre this game was, but I got a good deal on it, so I gave it a try. Here's my experience with it so far: I discovered it's an immersive sim with roguelike elements. After 31 hours, I still haven't beaten it partly due to restarting for some unknown reason. But, when I restarted I was armed with knowledge. Knowledge is the game's stock and trade. Example: enemies like zecs who float around with impenetrable shields are tough customers. But I used a gun that shoots radioactive spikes, which causes radioactive clouds to form where the spikes land, which get behind the shield, and managed in that way to neutralize them. The game also allows tactics like locking doors to cut off pursuers, adding strategic depth. Each randomly generated ship presents different challenges and resource considerations, making every decision a gamble. There are no guarantees. And the game likes to introduce unexpected obstacles. Sometimes these challenges are telegraphed, but can easily be overlooked amid 1001 other considerations. Example: a seemingly easy ship might be close to a pirate ship on the starmap, leading to an annoying and dangerous post mission confrontation. I think anyone who likes immersive sims will enjoy this game. As for drawbacks, the humor is centered around a corporate Bri'ish dystopia, and that might not resonate with everyone. I think other games have done atmosphere a lot better, and I think this game makes some odd choices with its sound design, but I'd say it nevertheless qualifies as atmospheric.
