Hyperkinetic neopoly roguecade action game with procedural generation at its core. Order within chaos. Feeling inside polygons!

Violet Cycle is a great little game. Its combat feels very unique. It feels kind of methodical; almost like a middle ground between a typical action game and a turn-based strategy game. Maybe I just get that feeling due to how enemy attacks and your own attacks are signaled on the floor tiles, but in any case it's a satisfying experience, especially with the different weapons offering some nice variety in approaches. The visual design feels unique as well and honestly looks great. The music is really nice too (and kinda reminds me of Fever Ray a bit). I was able to beat the game with 7/9 achievemenst in under 4 hours. That may be less than what some people are looking for, but personally I love shorter games and also appreciate having a roguelike that I could actually beat for once, haha. I really do recommend the game, as its very fun and unlike anything else I've played. I can see myself coming back to try and beat my highscore, just because of how great the gameplay feels.
I quit within the first ten minutes on my first playthrough, thought I'd give it a second try. But nothing changes. Combat is boring, spam X to smack away at enemies with no feedback on your hits. Occasionally you'll get hit back, good luck understanding how most enemies attack or how to dodge them. You often take damage without even knowing. Some enemies fly, requiring a jump to reach them. Jumping requires you to hold A, which takes far too long and removes all flow from the combat. And once you're finally up, it's difficult to tell with the perspective whether you're even close enough. "Story" is nigh nonexistant. A bunch of confusing gibberish in the intro, then a mostly censored text log at the end of each level you need to reach multiple times to view fully. Thing is, the later text logs don't change at all and will continue on even if you haven't fully unlocked the others, so often you can work out what's happened without even needing to fully unlock the previous ones. Graphical style was interesting, but there's absolutely no variety to environments. The "forest" literally just had patches of green and that was it. Roguelike elements just change the area design and enemies spawned. The design of each level almost never matters as there's no real hazards and enemies don't really force you to change tactics or anything either. I really don't recommend this game, there's just nothing special or interesting to it in any way.
I gave a positive review in Feb 2018 with just a bit of playtime. I played more recently, relearned the game, and saw how basic the game really is. It's hardly a roguelike. There are only 5 weapons, 3 of which are awful. Most of the skill upgrades don't seem to work. Hitboxes and visuals feel messy and inconsistent. This was a game I wanted to start speedrunning, which would be doable since a full clear of 13 rooms is fast, but it's just boring.
DISCLOSURE: I got this game back in January for free as part of the PC Gamer Club. I'll be damned if this isn't a fun game. It needs more publicity - At the time of writing, this review should only be the TENTH review of this game... EVER. And this is a good game - The controls are a little bit floaty and imprecice at first, but after about 20 mins (Getting to about level 4, the second time - I failed it the first), they become a bit easier to actually control.
Incredible little game. Tough but fair, the isometric voxel art is brilliant and the only downfall is there isn't more of it.
💋
this game is an undulating dream.

This game rules. It seriously has one of the most unique character controllers I've experienced in a character action game, in a way that makes me feel like this weighty bulk of destruction. Once it starts coming together in your hands, it's really something. Enemy designs are good, combat has an amazing back-and-forth flow to it, and the killer soundtrack and art tie everything together. I'm not quite sure yet what sort of Hell I'm ascending through, but I can't wait to keep exploring it.
