Final Rating: Negative Rating

TLDR: If you want something dead simple to pick up for mate-in-one chess puzzles, Zen Chess works fine for a quick session. But unfun puzzles, poor readability, and loud music made it annoying for me beyond the basics.

Full Thoughts
Positive Points: Accessibility in Playing - Super easy to jump into and play right away, no steep learning curve here. Mixed Points: Puzzle Volume - Plenty of puzzles to work through, which could be great except I did not find most of them engaging or fun at all. Move Feedback - No explanation for why certain moves fail. I could usually figure it out eventually, but clearer hints would have helped a ton. Negative Points: Core Fun Factor - Feels very basic overall. Sure, mate-in-one means it is simple by design, but that does not make the puzzles enjoyable. Readability Issues - Hard to read the board with no proper outlines, piece highlighting, or other visual aids. All that turned basic play into needless frustration. Audio Problems - Music blasts way too loud right from the start.

Closing Thoughts
Overall, Zen Chess has the bare minimum accessibility in simply playing the game going for it, but the dull puzzles, missing feedback, and technical gripes like readability and volume killed my interest fast. Skip unless you need ultra-basic chess brainteasers. This has been a lot of fun. I will admit, I don't know a gosh darn thing about Chess, my husband had to help me figure a lot of these out. There is a video guide someone made I believe if you're just in it for the achievements. I love how lightweight the program is, we left it up and would do one or two when we could, it's perfectly for relaxing and giving yourself a puzzle to work on.
Zen Chess is a wonderful game for meditation and relaxation. However, I think it would be even better if you added an option to play matches against the computer or with friends locally, similar to traditional chess games. I would definitely purchase it again if that feature were included. Please consider this as constructive feedback for improvement, not as a criticism of the game or an attempt to harm anyone's morale.
