This one really surprised me... I wasn't expecting much, but it turned out to be one of my favorite Mega Man clones (and there are many I've played). The controls are great, the stages are well designed and varied (while not overly gimmicky). The bosses are fun and the last three (e.g. the big skeleton thing from the trailer) top most of the action platformer boss designs made by one-man developers. The game also has a light RPG leveling system, but that's rather accessory or could be considered as a kind of micro difficulty adjustment. The music is especially beautiful! 8-bit-style chiptunes as you would expect from a Mega Man game. You can find the whole soundtrack for free here. A really surprising strength of the game is the writing, its story and characters. A tale of betrayal and subtle love indeed! The worst thing I can say about Vintage Hero is that it is too short. It only has four regular stages and two "Willy Castle" levels inculding the obligatory boss rush and three new bosses. But that's in a line with many Mega Man clones. Everything in this game feels as if it was made with love and care. I wish for a sequel, where a certain character takes revenge! this is a decent budget mega man clone. it also uses a level up system like link (nes zelda 2) where you get point bags and points from killing enemies to use when you "level up". it's well done but a bit on the short side with only 6 levels with about an hour or two of gameplay though it is only $2.
I'm glad I gave this game a chance. It looks like a low budget Mega Man, and it is, but it's also very fun. I can honestly say I had more fun with this than any official Mega Mans I've played in the last 10 years. The level designs are tuned to perfection with amazing attention to detail. The boss patterns are all unique and interesting. It's very minimalist, more in the vein of Mega Man 1 & 2 (no sliding, no megabuster), but the pacing is just right. It's a little on the easy side and has an XP system which makes the game a little easier as you progress. I also played on Easy mode which gives infinite lives. Yes, the sprites are awful (with the exception of a few backgrounds). I think they made an honest effort, but the art is bad in so many ways. If they got a sprite artist to redo everything it would make a huge difference in how the game is perceived. Level themes are super weird... I'm not even sure how to interpret them, but at least they aren't cliche! The soundtrack has some kickin' chip tunes and fits great with the style. The story is a little too wordy, but it's easy to skip through it. It ends on an unwelcome cliff hanger that caught me by surprise. But most of this is nitpicks. It all adds up to one of the best Mega Man type games I've played in a very long time. Short and sweet with just enough of it's own identity.
I was pleasantly surprised by Vintage Hero. While it is a bit on the short side it's a good Megaman clone. It also has good music, which is lacking in a lot of these budget platformer games.
To me, this is the perfect example of a "Hidden Gem". Very competent Mega Man clone with adjustable difficulty.
This is a fun platformer, well worth the $2 in my opinion. I beat it in about 90 minutes, but I had beaten it before a couple of years ago when I bought it on Desura. Also, I played it on "easy" because it has unlimited lives. If you play it on "normal" you have 3 lives and less checkpoints and it will certainly take longer. There is also a "hard" mode with one life. There are four main levels, with a boss at the end of each. Once you beat each boss, you get a new weapon to use. You get experience as you go, and can raise four stats: HP, attack, defense and the "meter size" of your weapon, whatever that means. I never noticed a difference when I raised it. Once you beat the four levels and bosses, there is still quite a ways to go. I don't have much negative to say about it. I wish there was a harder mode, but with unlimited lives. I no longer have the patience to start over after my lives are gone, but "easy" is a bit too easy. Only a couple of bosses took more than two tries, and none took more than four tries.
Not a bad effort overall
Amazing game! 9/10 but controls were a little wonky. I just used my steam controller but if there was a "controls" setting then it would be 10/10. Can't wait for vintage hero 2.
It's Mega Man, and it isn't really trying not to be. Jumps are a bit higher, and there are only four bosses whose weapons you obtain, but still very Mega Man, even if prior to sliding or buster charging. As Mega Man, it's decent, and one neat thing is that it has RPG elements; as you kill enemies or grab... point canisters? you can choose to increase your life, ammo, attack, or defense, each of which maxes out one level past 10. It's kinda weird that you only get to keep those levels if you finish the stage, but the game isn't all that hard for Mega Man veterans; I beat the first stage I tried without a single death, and died probably less than half a dozen times throughout the entire game. Soundtrack is good, and the visuals, while not mind-blowing, are at least interesting. The writing's a little off, but if you're playing Mega Man for the writing, you're doing it wrong. I've played plenty of Mega Man and quite a few knockoffs, and this is better than most.
