Please follow my Curator page if you like this review :) Fun to play if acquired in a sale, but the experience is largely a barebones JRPG experience. The story is about a guy who gets transformed into a girl, and sets out on a quest to get his body back. That's really all there is to the story, and I feel that this game could have been so much more, if extra effort had been put into building a much more expansive story. However, I did enjoy my casual playthrough of this game, enough to recommend it at a 66% discount rate or better.

Victim of Xen is a thoroughly mediocre JRPG using mostly RPG Maker default art. Its main gimmick - that the main character is transformed into a girl near the start of the game - doesn't really amount to much other than a handful of jokes and a motivation for the quest. The gameplay is rather basic. Over the five or so hours it should take you to finish the game, you'll hit level ten or so, and have maybe four skills on all of your characters. Most character upgrades will be from getting better equipment, but most of the best equipment in the game is available from nearly the start, as soon as you have money to buy it. Unfortunately, there are very few reasonable sources of money in the entire game, the most efficient being a minigame in a town available from nearly the start which rewards 5 gold every time you interact with something, take two steps, and interact with another thing. The story is also fairly servicable - nothing too stupid and your party isn't just one-note characters - but also not really better than that. As stated above, if you were expecting something to be done with the transformation theme, you're going to be let down. On the other hand, it's neither completely predictable nor is it wildly stupid. On a positive note, Victim of Xen is rather interactive, with a lot of hidden items all over the game, and dialogues and events changing based on when in the game you talk to people, or in which order you retrieve the shards once the game goes from linear to open. However, it's also hardly the sort of game that you should play multiple times, so some of that effort feels wasted. Ultimately, I can't really recommend Victim of Xen. It's not terrible, but most people play JRPGs for one or both of story and combat, and Victim of Xen only delivers a mediocre story and bad combat, with its best feature being mostly for replay value in a game that you probably shouldn't even play the first time.
Follow our Curator Group for more reviews
Victim of Xen is an RPGMaker game that is about average when compared only to RPGMaker games, but can't compete against the RPG genre overall. It falls into a lot of common RPGMaker traps, making it hard to recommend, even for fans of RPGMaker games. The story is fine, but isn't particularly engaging. It serves to get you from Point A to Point B, but it doesn't feel like the plot is ever there just to tell a story. The dialogue is better than most RPGMaker games. Compared to games with a stronger focus on story, it is only mediocre, but the dialogue works fine in the context of this game. Gameplay-wise, Victim of Xen is expectedly bland. It uses the generic RPGMaker combat system and doesn't add much to it. If you've played a handful of RPGMaker games, you'll recognize it instantly, and become bored soon after. Overall, Victim of Xen is a completely mediocre game. If you want to play a forgettable RPG that just goes through the motions, this game is perfect. For the average player though, this is an easy game to skip. 3/10
Visit our website for more in-depth reviews and recommendations
https://youtu.be/yLScuqJ_4l4 Massive amounts of grinding are required to make any progress in this straightforward RPGMaker title. Combat is mostly trading fight commands while the narrative takes massive leaps without support.

RPG Maker strikes again! This is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel JRPG ripoffs spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club weeaboo fan fiction. This is definitely one of the worst RPG maker FF ripoff games ever made. Apart from the crappy graphics, almost all asset flips because the developer seriously couldn't be bothered, the developer identifies as cross gender and aggressively pushes their personal emotional issues at the player. I don't believe that video games are the correct forum for expressing personal psychological issues the developer is suffering from. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. Leave this terrible fan fiction/poor tribute to social justice warfare in the shovelware bundles where it belongs. The $14.50 price tag is a severe insult to the gaming industry.
