Software like this perfectly exemplifies why VR is such a gamechanger and a huge leap forward in technology. SynthVR let's you assemble, wire, and play your own modular synthesizers from the ground up. This is great because to do this in real life you either need to spend thousand$ or borrow one from someone who owns one and good luck with that. I am a total n00b with modular synthesizers but I'm already starting to learn the basics and it's extremely fun. The possibilities are almost endless. There are limitations in terms of the types of modules there are but you can wire them together in a seemingly infinite manner. It's almost overwhelming just how many options there are. You can start from scratch or load other peoples' presets by typing in their code. You can also load a random patch which is a fun feature. When you first launch SynthVR it shows you a somewhat basic synth/pad/drum combo to play with. How the thing is wired is mind boggling in itself. I've barelly scratched the surface with this and I can't wait to keep tinkering and learning more. This is a must-have for anyone who loves synthesizers! Below is a video of me playing with a synth/drum combo in 3/4. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764201970

It pains me to leave a negative review because the basis is very much there and works just fine and as intended. This software shows how modular in VR is so, so much nicer than in 2D like in VCV rack. But the basis is also all there is here. There is a massive lack of modules and the modules that are there are not versatile enough to accomodate for that. It's entirely missing any module with randomness in its output, which is essential for modular setups. There is one type of reverb and one type of delay. The sequencers are lacking in CV inputs for things like range and other modules have similar problems of not having enough CV inputs. It's just not worth it's money until this gets more modules. I can't emphasize how much of a shame this is because it has huge potential. But right now the better choice is to get VCV rack for free and do without VR, because this got me less than 5 hours of playtime before I reluctantly decided to go back to 2D.
Great potencial. But it looks like no further development. No updates since launch.... disappointing
GOOD: Everything functions as it should Patch share/random is neat Dev seems open to module submission from others Recording stereo audio with 3D positioning PROCEDURAL GRIPES Spawning modules should automatically be gripped for placement, not hovering over menu No option for free locomotion with joystick...can pan left and right but no forwards/backwards. Not a fan of teleportation. I get free loco makes many people sick. At least give us the option. No facilities for module default module settings? Having to turn off every channel on a mixer after spawn is tedious. No copy/paste module states? WISHLIST: NEEDS TURING MACHINE MODULE or other repeatable random like Marbles, generally more probability driven stuff like a Bernoulli Gate Velocity module - bipolar mode? Built in VCA on Wave modules CV controlled background graphic elements OVERALL: Launch selection of modules is quite limited. May not appeal to eurorack powerusers. I may just be spoiled by VCVrack Is it worth $20 and I'm just being a picky ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Yes. For now. Will this have to keep up with Synthspace? Yes. Look at the feature set they have planned. To be totally honest, the only reason I grabbed this is because they're still not in public release.
I have no experience with modular synths outside of this but I'm having a lot of fun despite not knowing what I'm doing.
Abandoned. :(
Ignore my recorded playtime in Steam. I have sunk many hours into SynthVR via sideloading on my Quest 2. First off, let me say that this app has given me more hours of pleasure than any other VR experience or game. I really, really love it, and if you are interested in modular synthesis and own a VR setup then this is probably something you will enjoy immensely. Though I do not own a hardware modular system, I would recommend it even to those who do have a physical instrument. This app does a great job of giving you very usable and predictable interactions, which really helps the experience feel "right". From the simplicity of the graphic design to the spacing and size of the controls, SynthVR creates the believable illusion that you are physically interacting with a modular synthesizer system. It has most of the basic modules that you'd expect, and it has some weird and exotic modules as well. While you won't find 10 different filter models or a wide selection of OSCs, there is enough here right now to really dig in to a deep synthesis experience. One of the most wonderful aspects of this application is how creative the user can be when patching. Out of the box, a single sequencer can only store and run one sequence, but by using some logic and utility modules the user is able to create a system that would let you press a button that would toggle which sequencer is active; thus allowing you to create an evolving composition. The app is full of problems and solutions like these, and it creates a very rewarding process. There is so much creativity available in this app that all of its current limitations and downsides don't feel bad or too punishing. So, let's talk about some of the downsides. While I highly recommend purchasing this app through Sidequest if you own a Quest 1/2, the processing limitations of the Quest platform will hold you back if you want to get serious with your patches. The clip launching setups (I've tried multiple ways that work) that I referenced in the previous paragraph started to grind my Quest 2 to CPU overload when paired with a full set of other complimentary voices. The Steam version running on my stout desktop does not have these issues. Another set of pretty annoying problems are the lack of visual indicators for values that knobs and faders are set at or scrolling through. For instance, you don't get a numerical BPM, a note indicator from a sequencer, a length of decay or delay times, etc. Since the system is self-contained at the moment, it's not the end of the world, but for more precise patching or in order to sync this to a real-world project or system SynthVR falls a little short. While the interactions are accurate and feel great for VR, there is a touch of clumsiness in interactions if you are in the heat of a performance. The user must really be focused in order to precisely grab and move controls quickly. In most cases, this problem isn't really a big deal, but if you are trying to work through a build-up during a performance then grabbing the right control with confidence can be tricky at times. There's also, unfortunately, no swing functions in sequencers which definitely will limit the styles of music you could potentially make in here. All-in-all, for a 1.0 release, this app is, imho, a 10/10. There definitely could be more modules (hopefully more are coming), but what is here works well. I've run into one or two bugs, but there hasn't been anything that has ruined the experience, and the app generally works really, really well. In fact, I think this is the single best app for music creators that is currently available in VR. I also believe that SynthVR, for people who are interested in modular synthesis but don't have the space or money, is a VR system seller. The price of Quest 2 and synthVR is $330+tax, and that is an incredible bargain compared to the financial and space requirements for a full-on real-world modular system; especially at the size of the systems you can build here in VR. This is definitely a strong "recommend".
Super pour moi qui ne peut pas m'acheter un synthé modulaire!
