Until I Have You - сумасшедшая во всех смыслах игра (как с технической стороны, так и в плане сюжета, а под конец даже графики и звука), способная настолько же удивить, насколько и фрустрировать.
Strangeland (2021)
God Game. Don't be fooled by the somewhat derivative synthwave aesthetic and pretentious emo storyline stuff the game has going on, it's literally one of the coolest 2D sidescrollers for exciting setpiece driven stages and variety I've ever seen. The first 2 chapters are very normal, but things get very crazy and unbelievably cool right after that. Absolutely recommended for someone wanting aspects like that in a game like this.

The shortest review: pish! A review where I elaborate further: It's not utter pish, but is fairly pish-y, and not worth the cost My normal War and Peace sized review: This looked like it might be a passable 2d run-and-gunner, with a chunky cyber-punk vibe, but it's slightly misrepresented in the trailer. Do you run? Yes. Do you gun? Yes. Is this an action-packed thriller? er...it could be I suppose. Though by my definition it's an endless runner, that...er...doesn't see you endlessly running. Of the three teeny, bite-sized levels, that I've experienced, in each one you were running along a flat(ish) linear path, making the odd jump here and there over instant death falls, against a time limit. It's neither fish nor fowl for me. I don't like endless runners, and this technically isn't one. Whereas I do like action games which have good combat, exciting bosses, and tricky platforming. And so far there's been no evidence it's that either. It's just this weird, awkward mix between two camps. Normal movement is sluggish and clunky, so it doesn't excel as an action game. And the time limit to levels clearly shows it's not a metroidvania that rewards exploration, with this super-speed mechanic that's meant to make the platforming more tense. It got to the point where I didn't even bother with fighting, and was just jumping over enemies heads and then carrying on running. So technically, although the game doesn't constantly force you to move at speed like an endless runner would, it still plays like one, or at least is boring enough to make that the most viable way to finish it with the least amount of tedium. That's far from a ringing endorsement for a genre packed with slick, frantic, thrilling titles. 1) Level 1 - there's the exciting scenario of.... *SPOILER* a door closing some distance away from where I am......THAT I HAVE TO GET THROUGH!!!!!! WILL I MAKE IT IN TIME??????????????? Dun! Dun! Dun! Tune in to the next sentence to find out the conclusion of this astonishing saga.... 2) Yay! I did make it to the door. What pulse-pounding new thrill-ride will the game introduce for the next level? *SPOILER* Oh.... there's another door... some distance away from me... that's closing.... that I must get through.... before it closes..... because behind the door is somewhere I want to get to.... and I can't do that if the door is closed.... so.... um.... yeahhhhh........ Will I make it in time? Whooo.....urgh...... Do you give two rat-poops about finding out? (Because if you don't: you can skip reading about level three, as I'll spoil it right here and now. Level 3 is yet another race to get to a closing effing door) 3) Yay! I did make it to the door. Wonder what level 3 will be..... *SPOILER* Ohhhhhh....... f**k right off game! The invention on display here is mind-numbing. Blazing Chrome or Intrusion 2 are true games in the mould of Contra, or My Friend Pedro is a skill-based scoring shooter where stylish kills earn more points. Or the two Viktor games are surprisingly decent run and gunners, or Vanquish and Bayonetta can be bought for only a few quid more than this.....And those last two, despite being 3d games, will probably run well on a toaster, and are classics for the combat on offer. So I can't imagine there will be many people who will say "yeah, but I had to get 'until I have you' because that's all my pc can play" - even if it is the case you have to go 2d, there's still miles better games than this botched Frankenstein creation. Add onto that the lame music, which isn't the hard-edged synth electronica *coughs* the trailer gets somewhat close to achieving, and instead is like an elevator muzak version of themes from Bladerunner....*shudders* It lacks bite, and doesn't have Bladerunners gob-smacking visuals to distract from the wishy-washy-ness of it's soundtrack. Visuals and design are fairly average too, with the dubious story-telling of a cheesy 80's "futuristic" movie if it was told by people who don't have English as their native language. So you get slightly dodgy dialogue delivered in a slightly stilted manner, that unsurprisingly fails to walk the thin line between being cool, and being stoopid.
Platforming is a big part of this game and the controls are clunky to say the least. I finished the game in hardcore mode in 4 hours with a lot of restarting to get 100% completion on all of the levels. Even without doing 100% there's a lot of restarting on the hardcore mode as You'll fall to death many times and will have to remember some level layouts to pass through them. If you're not turned off by the fact You'll die often then You should definitely give it a try. The story and soundtrack is great and each chapter tries to add more variety to the game. You start with a pistol and a bat and as You progress You get access to other weapons and an ability to dash. Chapters introduce new stuff and bossfights according to the upgrades You get. In some boss fights You don't have to fight with the boss but chase them or dodge their attacks until the end of the fight. Voice acting is good enough though the Doctor VA sounded a bit weird and made the game a bit awkward. For the price it might be annoying with clunky controls and a lot of falling but on a discount it's definitely worth a try.
Pretentious, clunky, derivative, overpriced... but on sale, there is enough here to warrant play. There are nods here to some great games and movies. It's clearly been done out of passion for the genre and that is valuable. But just be warned it is rough and that clearly has upset some who couldn't get past it and negatively reviewed. In terms of the style, the 'p*** on their carpet' script is enjoyable to me - there is many a great game with terrible writing which can't even be ironically enjoyed. Here, if you have an iffy script and a rough game, why the thumbs up? It's because you just want to get 100% on the levels, not because the levels or the gameplay or the narrative are perfect. But if that button is pressed, where I want to get the stages right, then a game is clicking. And we've all known plenty where it has everything down, but it just doesn't make you want to play it - there's no itch. Here, I want to come back. And for the price paid, that is excellent. Have wishlisted other titles by the developer and hope to play some of those. Bottom line: slickness isn't everything, fun comes in different forms :)
A touching and emotional journey! The story is heartfelt, and the characters are relatable. Highly recommend for those who enjoy deep, meaningful experiences.
If you asked your 11 years old little cousin and his friends to make a video game, you'd get something like this. Terrible controls, laughably bad animations, cringe voice acting, and a veeery edgy protagonist.
