The game released back in 2024 so I can safely say that this is the last one. Yet, it was the first one with Steam Achievements. 39 of them too! Which is quite a bit. Other things stayed the same, like the star system that still requires the darn DLC to get the good ending and unlock the full game. Some things never change, at least in the Domini world. Story- To start off, the story was quite interesting and different from other games. It was actually refreshing to see new ideas and some creativity back in the series. Now, what puzzled me was the start of the second chapter.
All of a sudden, Scott is there like nothing ever happened. As if he had been there the entire time. Business as usual. No mention of the cliff hanger in the previous bonus chapter or why he wasn't part of the first case. Just like *poof* smoke bomb! Here I! I never left! For a total screen time of (possibly) 5 minutes max. Then gone again. Wtf?
Story confusion in its continuity seems like a recurrent theme in the series. More than once, they played the "guilt trip" card for not having the DLC, which was very cruel story-wise.
More than once when selecting the non DLC option, they mention "oh I hope that doesn't put "insert character name" in peril or cause them to perish" in relation to the storyline and what is happening to a such character. One character being an important one in the series and another an important one for this game.
Low blow to grab some money. All in all, the main storyline was engaging. It made sense and was pretty entertaining, even with its flaws. It felt good for the game to have some semblance of what made it interesting at the start of the series. Unfortunately, all of this in the last game. Hidden Object Scenes (HOPs) - They were entertaining and creative. They did repeat scenes although with different mechanics. Thankfully, it wasn't excessive. There were all new areas, and no previous game areas were re-used. Kudos to the team on that one! Puzzles and mini games - Back to creative! There were some mechanics we've seen before but they still made it feel fresh and managed to make it entertaining. There were only a couple I may have skipped but mostly because I knew they would take longer to solve and I didn't have the time (or patience). There were 2 puzzles I simply did not have any idea on what to do. It could've been me not understanding the instructions, but I think the instructions on these two weren't clear enough. This could've been from a bad translation or simply bad instructions. Either way, I had no idea how to solve them and in order to continue I had to skip. So, 4 in total. Bonus Chapter- It was fun one. I enjoyed it through and through. I didn't skip puzzles and enjoyed the hidden object scenes plus the story was entertaining. Not the best, but entertaining. Now, this one was definitely not a bonus chapter for a "last of the series" game. I don't know if the team knew it would be the last or not, so I can't blame them fully on that one. In the Bonus Chapter, they sort of set some of the story to have possible continuity.
They introduce a character that happens to be a detective. At some points he mentions that they make a good team, and I think he calls him "partner" too but I'm not 100% on that one. They might've been setting it up to have him come back in the next game. That would be good writing though and the latter part of the series had really bad writing so this might be a stretch.
This is one of the reasons I think they weren't planning on this being the last of the series, but I could be wrong. Overall, it was a much better game than the previous 3. We had variety, creativity, good HOPs and puzzles/mini games. Good characters with a decent story. I was very happy with this one, even if it didn't feel like the last one. I do recommend it, but not at full price. I rarely recommend HOG at full price especially Domini games with their DLC money grabbing ways. A little discount would be a great deal for this game. As of today, it's priced at $8.99, so it wouldn't need a huge discount. It's worth the playthrough.
