Umihara Kawase is a girl who uses a fishing hook as a grappling hook. You’ll need quick reflexes to swing your way through the branching surreal environments. Use your brains to figure out the best way through. They say fish is brain food—you’re going to need it!

Interesting platformer game.
you get to be spiderman and there are fish
I love Umihara Kawase: the insane level design and precision platforming; the near-infinite ceiling for skill expression; the mostly tough-but-fair difficulty; the calming music and laidback atmosphere; and the quirky artwork. There's a lot I hate about it, too: the unhinged amounts of RNG enemy spam in late-game levels; the all-or-nothing arcade-style gameplay (i.e. no continues when you exhaust your lives); the occasionally janky-feeling hit/hurt boxes and collision effects; and the often tedious boss fights. At its worst, it not only feels dated (it was released in 1994 after all) but downright busted. That this game won me over after repeatedly crushing my resolve is a testament to how fun and fresh it still feels. Yes, even despite the flaws (sorry, the random enemy spawning just plain sucks). If you have copious patience and enjoy a game opening up as you gain skill, this could become one of your new favorite titles. That said, I haven't been this stressed out 100%-ing a game since I beat the Pantheon of Hallownest in Hollow Knight years ago. Seriously: if you can't cope with the idea of watching 20+ minutes of progress go down the toilet, steer clear. But Umihara Kawase is one of the best, most infuriating and ultimately fun games I've ever played.
Words cannot describe how good of a game this is.
Be aware that you game over in this game, you should probably play Sayonara first because that game wasn't made in the nineteen hundreds and lets you die as often as you want. This game though has better aesthetics though (not as good as Shun's though) and also better level design (again not as good as Shun's buuut it's also a matter of opinion. Still really damn good in both regards you're not gonna wanna miss it)
The first in the series, so it is a big rough around the edges. It has the least amount of levels, so the content is quite there. It also lacks Diagonal Macro Buttons which makes it incredibly frustrating to play. Pair that with some insane level design (and bosses) it is very difficult, even for a veteran of the series. It's still fun though to see where it all started and there is a unique vibe to it that the others don't have. I think it lacks a lot of QoL that the later installments in the series has that it makes it hard for me to enjoy as much, but still a solid game.
[/strike]
