years of development to achieve the same old buggy mess
I really like this type of game and had actually been following the franchise for years. But in the first few minutes of play I found the character attributes are lacking tooltips to explain what they mean. There are also no hotkey hints for what the buttons in the UI do. These are really basic things that every game of this sort should have, and is easy for the developer to add (I'm talking a few days of effort). I don't want to spent a lot of time trying to learn the game, only to find the same lack of effort after putting hours into it.
While the style and gameplay here evoke other X-COM games, this particular version is lackluster. The most glaring flaw is the complete and utter lack of story, plot, or setting. Without that, you're just fighting random aliens who look like robots. The Good: Combat is challenging Semi-destructible environment There is an attempt at base-building The Bad: The base building is one-dimensional: Just build everything Alien sprites are poorly done - they all look robotic, even when they're not supposed to Combat stats are lacking No setting - just random fights with zero explanation of why the aliens are attacking, who you are, what the goal of the game is, or any clue as to what's going on.
A chyb mozem pridat. Mam hl. zakladnu v Grecku. Vietadlove lode mam v Stredozemnom mori a v Ciernom mori. Lode nevedia tieto moria opustit a uz pomali idem na MARS a nemal som ani jednu namornu missiu. Dymove granaty su v hre, jedine ked si editujem save file a dam ich na sklad. Vo vyskume mi zostal projekt leteckej bomby, ked ho spustim, hned mi napise ze vyskum skoncil a bomba nieje ani v UFOPEDII ani ju neviem vyrobit.
UFO2: Extraterrestrials is an excellent turn based strategy XCOM UFO Defense type game similar to UFO Extraterrestrials. This game improves on the first with more of the same, but done better, cleaner and with logical progression. More aliens, more weapons, more research and more bang. I really enjoy the addition of the mortars - an excellent area of effect weapon that makes you feel like you have a chance against the alien horde - plus it is fun to use. The modding allows you to customize the experience to be as challenging as you'd like - making it the way you want to play. You decide how to play the game. Very well done.
Another XCOM type game. Does some things differently but basically the same as other XCOM clones. And since that is my favorite type of game, barring survival types. I do recommend it if this is your jam. I play and enjoy both titles in the series immensely. The first one I didn't get on steam though. They are also re=making the first one with all the mechanics of the second one. EDIT: The remake is a SCAM. They cut and run after its release. So I wouldn't support these guys.
Why do I recommend this game? Several reasons, however, this game is not for everyone. Pros: -With the in-built X-mod settings, you can set the difficulty more to your liking. Example: give the aliens vision disadvantage, for both day AND night, because they're effectively fighting on foreign terrain? Yes. Make production shorter/longer? Yes. Make it easier or harder to raise trooper level with experience? Yes. Disable soldier death so your soldiers only get knocked out? Yes please! -Player controlled soldier development. Also a Con but will be explained later. -Long War/Slow start. The start of the game starts out fairly easy (if you prefer enjoying a game and not going for the hardest challenge on your first run) and slowly ramps up in difficulty (difficulty ramp may vary per player) -Armor does its job. In games like the original XCOM: UFO Defense, XCOM Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within, and Xenonauts armor only negates damage by a certain amount. In this game, damage has a chance to be completed negated on your troops. Note, this also applies to the enemy as well but is mostly a positive. -Mortar. I LOVE the mortar. Note, it has to produced through base manufacturing as well as its shells -Looks of the aliens. Some people say they look too robotic, even if they're not. Me, I find they look cool, even somewhat terrifying, with the bio-tech/robotic look. -Geoscape aircraft combat. Some people don't like this, but I find it to actually be cooler than the original XCOM's and cooler than XCOM Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within's geoscape aircraft combat. Seeing your aircraft, and helicopters, duke it out against alien void-craft is awesome. -Helicopters. You get both jets and helicopters for interception craft -Support Drone. Best early game support unit in my opinion. -Base building -North and South Poles have Arctic locations that can be fought in -All the armors I have currently unlocked look cool in their own ways -Rare items; not spoiling the names but so far, the ones I've acquired are quite cool -Destructible environments Cons: -Tutorial is poorly made. It explains barely anything, forcing you to figure out the game for yourself, including what each stat beyond Vitality, Strength, Bravery, and Agility does for your soldiers when you level them up -Alternate Tech Tree doesn't work, or I at least had an issue where it resulted in my game crashing when I went into the research tab. -Lack of starting human weapons. You start the game with a Rifle, a Rocket Launcher and a Mortar that can be manufactured and a grenade. The rifle and rocket launcher, and their respective starter ammo, and the starter grenade can be bought. The X-mod section has a "balanced rifle" mod that lists rifles, shotguns and pistols and flamethrower yet I have yet to see them. Are they locked behind the alternate tech tree X-mod, or is this a leftover from an earlier design? -Linear tech tree. The tech tree is really restrictive. Example: You get three alien items; fiber, engine and flight control. You cannot instantly research them, you have to research their requirements which can take awhile to acquire -Soldier development. Since the tutorial is so poor, you are given no information on soldier stats and there is no pop-up tooltip to help out. So perception, shooting and throwing are still unknown on to what benefits what for my soldiers. -ARMOR PIERCING ammo for the rifle has very little effect on the Bonesetter enemy (spoiler) which annoys me to no end. -Photon Beamer is HIGHLY inaccurate, even point-blank effectively. My advice? Only have one soldier use the thing. Sell the rest -Lab base building is SUPER EXPENSIVE -Lack of "filler" research on UFO items and crash site spawned flora(?). If you play this, or have played this, you'll know what I mean. I want to know what everything is but only the "important" items are researchable...boo. -Camera resets every turn. -No control shortcut listings -Destruction of walls does not cause building collapse and explosions only effect one level All in all, this game is actually pretty cool and a lot more fun than the original XCOM UFO Defense and more fun than XCOM Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within. However, it is not for everyone. Especially the graphics. Some people say they're terrible. I find them enjoyable, once I lowered the zoom through X-mod settings. Not EVERY game needs hyper-realistic graphics that mimic the real world. This game isn't perfect but no game truly is. I've enjoyed my experience with this game a lot despite the issues I've had in trying things out. I haven't beaten it, but I wanted to give my current thoughts on it. One final bit of advice, unless there's "terror missions", which I have yet to encounter, blow up EVERYTHING. If you see fuel trucks or barrels, shoot them. There's a high chance you'll hit a couple enemies and the resulting explosions will take them out, especially if you hit with the mortar first. WARNING! Ensure your own soldiers are not within the blast radius! The price tag is a bit steep though.
I advise you to wait the golden version of this game if it ever comes out. If you really want to play it, then go for it, but as soon as you hit positron armor, let all aliens vessel trough and dismantle all base deffense turrets to not to harm them. You will need an alien base, then you need to have the alien base upgraded (so dont dunk on it until its nice and big and circlely domy) Durring this time finish off all remaining research and prepare youre mega team. AND SAVE AFTER EVERY UNIT GEARED, YES IF YOU HAVE 16 UNITS, YOU SAVE 16 TIMES, AND EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO GO TO THE SHOP/INVERTORY/BASE BEFORE IT SAVE. If you follow these instructions you can save yourself the pain i suffered and maybe finish the game.
Terrible game play mechanics and graphics. The graphics look like from game 20 years ago. The first game had way better graphics. I tried to get refund 2 weeks per Steam's policy. Do not purchase.
