Alright. Turquoise is a digital aquarium for all intents and purposes. There isn't really something to be done and dusted with here outside of finding all the fishies and the secret animals. Which I probably won't do. So yeah, your goal here is to create a nice reef to check out and screenshot to your heart's content. It's definitely cozy and pretty relaxed, which is cool. You are given a pretty substantial tutorial, which is always appreciated. You'll definitely have all the program's systems down when you complete it. From there, you can choose one of three biomes and either sandbox or discovery modes. Sandbox is just a digital playground for you to create the coolest reefs you can imagine. Discovery offers a few goals, which all center around finding every animal possible, cataloguing them. While still building your digital aquarium of course. This does bill itself as an educational game, and that is true to an extent. You aren't walking away from this believing you know much about the animals you encounter, but they do offer a brief Wikipedia entry for each animal you discover. Since the majority of fishies can be created by you, you will be able to see and read most entries in a short period of time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3713912860 The building aspect is front and center of course, as it should be. It's reasonably intuitive thanks to the tutorial, and you do have a solid variety of assets, from underwater plants, the aforementioned fish, and some actual aquarium decorations as well. It's all decent-ish. I would say the assets are lackluster overall, but they do fulfil their purpose. I'm sure dedicated players can craft some impressive reefs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3713918450 There is a day/night cycle, and this is something I didn't enjoy. Why? For one, it's too quick to change between day and night, and so you never really get to fully appreciate checking everything out during the day, and the lack of bioluminescence at night makes nighttime viewing pretty dull and drab. I think the cycle for each needs to be extended, and there definitely need to be some lighting options for nighttime viewing. Speaking from experience, there is at the very least bioluminescent algae pretty much everywhere in the ocean. Not to mention some of the creatures you might encounter. But also, this is a game. Let's spruce it up a bit. We already have aquarium toys we can place throughout. Why not some decent lighting? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3713912697 I didn't love Turquoise, but it's a decent little digital playscape. It's definitely chill and pretty relaxing. I would rate it as a little bit above average. Could be better, but too many of the actual assets are kind of washed, and that day/night cycle doesn't do it any favors. $6.20 is probably a bit optimistic for this experience, but YMMV of course. I would suggest grabbing this when it's discounted a bit, and/or after the devs clean up the visual experience, if they decide to do so. Its cute, but there is no game here. Its an underwater level editor with seemingly no goals or direction of any kind. The steam page brands this as "a cozy collecting and building game"... If there is actually a collection mechanic here, I didn't find it. You can pan and zoom the camera to place objects around, but you can't rotate. For a game where the only mechanic and purpose is to place props around, this feels like an oversight.
This game is pretty fun. Most of all though, I find it really beautiful. On the art side, I'd say I find it pretty complete, with a lot of different props to add. The fishes also look really good, and the reef can look really polished as long as you're skilled enough as a player to make it look nice enough. I will say that the props given to the player are really nicely spread out, with a great deal of both large, medium and small which allows for intuitive building and satisfying props that can add a lot of details by themselves, like clusters of rocks, anemones, corals... In short, I don't feel like there was any lack of props to mess with, that felt really good, so great job on that. However, I do have some issues on the gameplay. Although it does feel satisfying to see things come together, the controls are pretty strange, which leads to the game having a pretty rough onboarding on the control side. The gameplay loop also feels pretty underwhelming. This comes from a real lack of objective, which comes in my opinion from a missing feeling of progress. I saw that new fishes would appear after sufficiently decorating the reef. Simply notifying the player that a new fish appeared in the reef would already give a nice "Oh, I got something" effect that's currently missing in the game. Any other form of objective would be great. I've seen other reviews mention this, but this is currently only an editor, which lacks the actual "playing" part. The discovery mode feels like just a sandbox, so I'm not quite sure what the distinction is apart from being able to place fishes. Not quite sure where the game is currently on development, but I'd love to see an actual gameplay loop being fleshed out to keep the player engaged. Although it's really beautiful, once you've played with the editor a bit, the game doesn't really give you anything to stay motivated to build new stuff. However, adding information on the various species is a BIG plus for me. It's such a small thing on the surface, but it really shows how much love this game was made with. On a more personnal note, being a diver and an Endless Ocean fan and all, not being able to look around the tank felt really frustrating. Being locked to that panning view really felt like I was looking at a picture rather than a living environment, which could be an intention since there is that hand drawn look, but really feels limiting in game, like I'm not allowed to actually enjoy my creation to its fullest. Since I'm able to build in three dimensions and in depth, it felt really restrictive not being able to turn the camera in any way. I'd really like to have a real viewing mode which allows us to look all around and move in a better way. What I love most in those kind of games is actually getting to enjoy the world I'm creating, so being locked to a view so similar to the editor is actually pretty saddening. Sorry for the long review. Although I know I've given a lot of criticism here, it's mostly so you can get feedback and improve upon it. I do feel like this game was done with a lot of love, from the sheer amount of stuff in it alone. I don't leave a lot of reviews, unless the game really touches me. You made a really polished product, so I can only hope you all keep having fun with this and bring it even further! So I really hope you want to continue working on this, and flesh it out into a proper, amazing cozy game!
A really chill sandbox game. The visuals are very cool, I love it I haven't encountered any bugs so far Once you've finished decorating, leave the game running on your second screen, and the magic begins! Lots of fish come to visit your surroundings, it's very relaxing <3
Beautiful game. At first you might think okay it's just a sandbox... but then you unlock fishes, and get detailed real information about them! Loved finding ways to discover new ones, witnessing tiny ones starting to form schools and getting mesmerized by their movement! If you want to directly see all the fishes available instead of unlocking them, the sandbox mode is a great addition. I'd love to get more info about how to unlock them in discovery mode, but I understand it's probably part of the fun. Not for everyone because lack of directions, but if you're here for a relaxing pace stress-free time it's perfect. Reminds me of Viridi!!
Cute fish + colorful and pretty visuals + calming sound design = perfection It's both super relaxing & the prettiest eye candy. I genuinely reached flow state designing my little reefs. The diversity in assets and maps is sufficent to create diverse and furnished landscapes if you're willing to put some time into it. Highly recommend if you like cosy building games and if you're a sea enthusiast!
Really nice and cozy, just like I expected ! The atmosphere is incredibly soothing, with beautiful visuals and a calming soundtrack that fit perfectly together. Seeing my reef full of tiny fish swimming around is so satisfying ! Perfect if you’re looking for something calm and comforting.
One of the best fish game I ever PLAY. Even though the fish Design is on Point. But the movement of the camera got me really confused. It wasnt that good to be honest BUT if the camera movement is change to like a JWE2(jurassic world evolution 2) the game would be perfect! But overall this game is very good compare to other game like this. Would recommend if u just want a Low-cortisal game, no stress at all!
