This game is not that bad. Actually it is mainly a survival game, with objectives you have to complete in order to escape some metro tunnels infested with zombies and other nasties. You have a hunger meter and a health meter but forget about fighting enemies because they kill you in a few hits. Beware though : This game does not hold your hand. Some people might get frustrated, the tunnel system is pretty big and some items seem to spawn in random places. Also, you have to collect all notes for some reason(so it becomes a real hunt for something as stupid as notes). It's not my cup of tea... But people with more patience could like this game.
you wake up in a zombie infested metro and try to find a way out. puzzles, exploration, slight survival elements.
I did three tries on this game, didn't finish it, I think there is much more to it, but for the time being, had a good experience of it. Now the pictures I see on Steam didn't reflect back to me when I played it, maybe because I used the ULTRA setting and everything enabled? I had to up the brightness a bit, I was streaming it and nobody could see a thing. Anyways... I will give it a go again soon and try a different video setting. If my back had hair on them, they would have punctured my T-shirt while playing this game. The atmosphere is absolutely stunning! The sound effects, the sudden noises... I had to watch my step, those cans laying on the floor, one misstep and these starving meth-addicts would have heard me (or zombies, what you prefer) Those guys do not look rediculous but actually impressive, keeps the serious feeling of despair for sure. + Flashlight (to see your surroundings and spot interactive objects faster but those guys will be drawn by the light as well) + Crouching makes you silent in movement + Walking normal or hard, you will hear your footsteps (those guys can hear you and make you hear THEIR footsteps too) + Updating Objectives during your exploration, collectable items for in your inventory (quest objects/food/drinks) + Survival system: You need to either drink or eat to keep that indication bar satisfied + Sleeping saves the game with a save point, but I haven't found a bed yet... + Objective items, like a crowbar, wires, fuse, battery, doorwheel... You come across obtacles/doors that require one of more objects to operate to it's satisfaction (fixed locations, what a relief) - I know it's intented, but I think it's annoying AF : The Fog - This is intented too, otherwise the game would be too tedious as in a bad walking simulator : Running (now there is a stamina meter, but it's too generous) Right now: If the FOG comes, it takes down your hungerbar and then your healthbar. DEVELOPER can change this in a better setting: If the FOG comes, you move slower but it does not take down your hungerbar or attacks your health. (except for the DENSE FOG) INSTEAD, the hungerbar will be attacked when you start running/sprinting. The stamina meter will replenish, but you will loose a portion of your hungerbar. Especially when you try to run when there is a FOG... - When I discovered the sprinting mode, the game became less scary and I just sprinted away from the meth-addicts. That is quite a shame, because the first two tries, where I did not use the sprint option, everything was so scary from the beginning till my death. Think about this @developer - I know certain things are intented but it needs to keep the interest of the player too, after three tries I had enough of it already, I will try it again next time. I got disorientated all the time, so hard to pinpoint where I was and where I am, even doubting my own memory system sometimes. But, what an experience! I miss games like these, so geniusly put together. With some tweaks and little adjustments, this game would be one of the TOP games of it's genre of 2018. Again, this game has been donated by a fellow streamer and good friend : twitch.tv/quackquackityquack
There are dozens of "small indie walk around in the dark jump scare" games out there and most of them are garbage. Tunnels of Despair does it right. The atmosphere is creepy, the graphics are solid, the music is eerie, and the tension is real - exactly what you want from this kind of game. The core gameplay is avoiding shambling undead while trying to find the clues and objects you need to escape from an abandoned subway station. A simple premise, but one that works well. After a few horrible deaths you'll start to think that you have things figured out. Then, the situation gets worse and you go back to being afraid and dying. By the time you finally make it to one of the two exits, you will heave a genuine sigh of relief. Impressively, Tunnels of Despair is the creation of a single man (BearFighter) who is very active in the forums and responds to problems immediately. I reported an obscure but show-stopping bug seven months after launch and he had it patched in under a day. This is the mark of a true game developer and not an asset flipping cash grabber (i.e. the people who make most of the other jump scare games). In conclusion, give Tunnels of Despair a chance (even if like me, you're jaded about the genre because of all the trash you've played). You will probably be surprised.
