There's a lot to like about Tunic, but it has, and I am not exaggerating, some of the worst combat I've ever played in a video game. It is not fun. The exploration and discovery stuff is neat, I'm intrigued about the world. But actually playing the game is completely miserable. I quite like isometric combat too. The problem is that it's poorly made, unforgivably so. I'll be honest, I'll probably take another crack at it because there are things I like about the game. But, moment to moment, interacting with it, I am not having any fun at all.

I Did Not Enjoy It. I really tried to like TUNIC - find something, that will capture my attention, change my opinion, bring some new emotions other than constant irritation. It felt like an identity crisis for the game - it lures the player in with beautiful art and music, first couple of hours feel like a start of a bright Zelda-like adventure, accompanied by a brilliant idea of this almost physically real manual which has all the basic information and hints for puzzles. But it all crumbles with each new minute. Combat system is stiff and gives you just enough flexibility to go on, with most enemy encounters only feel intimidating at first and the only interesting bosses are the final one and the infamous gauntlet near the end of the game which puts your knowledge of its mechanics to the test. The story is basically non-existent. You're just trying to make sense of the labyrinth-world around you, with hundreds of puzzles and secret paths being hidden every step of the way, and that leaves you in a constant state of headbutting every possible corner - which becomes a burden in a blink of an eye. As for the world itself, there is a huge twisted twist to it, ruining immersion and making it hard not to ask a simple question "Why?" about such decision - shock value is not the price for that. And, as said before, the world is a maze with dozens of different paths, making inevitable runbacks
(cause teleports are so terribly placed, that it's just easier to walk on foot)
feel extremely tedious and slow. I kept asking myself - "What this game is trying to be? Who is this game for?". Is it for the kids? - nah, in its essense it's dark, gloomy, and actively unfriendly to the player. So obviously it's for adults then? - I honestly don't know. It should be, I guess? It operates on Zelda-nostalgia-appearance with colourful manual straight from the 1990-s. Many people compare it with "Outer Wilds" structure with how you slowly discover and unravel this world's secrets, but in "Outer Wilds" it all comes for the story - every new discovery is a new piece for the great mystery, while here dozens and dozens of puzzles are mostly there just for the sake of puzzles themselves, giving almost nothing to the story, and just having you occupied. I could spend more time for the true ending, finishing the search for the manual and solving the great and only puzzle - but I was already so tired of its gimmicks, so I just settled for the original ending. I've seen reviews - I know, that there are a lot of people, who appreciate the game for what it is, who loved the lore and all the hidden secrets beneath, but it just wasn't for me this time, I didn't enjoy this journey.
Beautiful graphics, beautiful music, lovely whimsical world. I enjoyed the opening sense of total mystery and the cascade of "aha" moments. This game feels like its closest primary influence is Zelda; in terms of the main action of the game I found this an enjoyable successor in that genre. On the other hand--and I am not saying anything that has not been thoroughly documented at this point--I did not especially enjoy the radical shift 2/3 of the way through (3/4? 7/8? I guess it depends how you play) from a platformer with modest and satisfying mysteries to a walking simulator with a great number of logic puzzles that came with very little payoff. At first I was enjoying the puzzles, but then it dawned on me that solving them was not amounting to anything. They were not really enhancing the story or logic of the game world, most of the rewards were irrelevant to gameplay, and the new phase of platforming that I expected to unlock never arrived. Meanwhile the puzzles demanded an astonishing amount of retracing steps (at least half of my total game time here was just walking around, pausing, thinking, and testing solutions). Plus, most of the puzzles were just increasingly complex variations on a theme. Also, a handful of the solutions felt debatable in terms of whether the answer truly matched what the clues suggested. I actually really love puzzle games; I grew up on Infocom text adventures and later games like Myst and Journeyman Project. I think what became wearisome here was that the very enjoyable action-based Phase 1 so completely won me over that the puzzling-based Phase 2 just...wore me out. It felt like the actual game paused--permanently--in order to do a completely different sort of game. But it is one thing to do a book of Sudoku when that is exactly what I am expecting and wanting, but would I want to interrupt a game of baseball in the 8th inning to do a book of Sudoku? I think not. In the end, Phase 2 almost soured me on the whole game. Not quite--I will definitely play this again, but only for Phase 1. I doubt I will ever trouble myself with the puzzles again.
I went into Tunic expecting a whimsical Zelda-like adventure puzzle game with this little sword wielding fox friend. What I got instead was a game that fought you any time you tried to understand the story in any meaningful way. Yes it gives you little hints here and there with pictures inside the manual, but it was like a drop of water given to a man dying of thirst. I had to receive hints on how to simply progress to the next area no fewer than 3 times prior to acquiring all 3 keys. I want to make special mention of the Quarry area. Never in my entire gaming life have I experienced a zone that I loathed more. You are given 1 shrine at the very beginning of the game, and then you are beset upon by enemies who are very accurate at long range, all the while having to take UNAVOIDABLE HEALTH DRAIN, which means that if you get hit ONE SINGLE TIME YOU GET TO START FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE LEVEL. And the solution to this, is equipping an item that does not seem to be an item, nor does it read as being an item. I completed this entire level without the mask out of pure spite and anger. To the developers: whomever designed the Quarry level, please do the gaming world a service and retire from designing video game levels. This particular zone is my #1 most hated video game level of all time. More than the water temple in Ocarina of Time, more than blight town in Dark Souls 1, more than ANY OTHER. The one aspect of the game that I enjoyed was the sound track. To the composers, you did an excellent job and should be proud. The game gets 4/10 from me, and 3 of them are for the sound track. The other 1 comes from the game taking only 10 hours from my life that I won't get back. Had it taken longer than that, I likely wouldn't have bothered to finish it.

I dont have time to solve all the puzzles by myself, but the exploration part where there's a lot of nooks and crannies to discover is very rewarding. I also like all the small details in the game, like when you're on fire and you do a barrel roll, it extinguish the fire... or when invisible enemies go through water there's still a visible walking trace. Amazing piece of art.
There’s a lot to like about Tunic. The visuals are gorgeous, the world is beautifully crafted, and the level design is consistently strong. Unfortunately, those strengths are held back by several frustrating design choices. Combat feels clunky, with the dash awkwardly tied to the dodge roll, forcing a slow roll before you can sprint. The game also leans too heavily on hiding secrets behind random scenery, making exploration feel more like pixel hunting than discovery. The in-game manual is intentionally cryptic, but it often crosses the line into being difficult to read and navigate, while parts of the story are so obtuse that they become more confusing than intriguing. On top of that, enemies are often much faster than the player, stamina feels overly restrictive even after obtaining the late-game upgrade, and too many pathways and treasures require obscure button combinations to access. If the dash had been mapped to its own button and stamina had been a bit more forgiving, Tunic would have been a significantly more enjoyable experience. As it stands, many of my deaths felt cheap rather than deserved. Unlike a Dark Souls game, where almost every death feels like the result of a mistake you can learn from, Tunic too often left me feeling frustrated instead of challenged.
