Very fun and innovative card game. Reminds me of tabletop deckbuilders, especially Dominion
While I would still like to see a little more depth, this is a fun and new take on the deckbuilder genre.
Picked up this very clean and polished deckbuilder on the Fall sale with all of the DLC's for like $15, priced right. Compared with my old standby, Dominion, which tries to hook you in with over $100 worth of DLCs, this is a fun little timekiller. Actually like the the variety of mechanics and the way each tableau/market gives you different choices each game. Sure, I have my fave goto cards by now, but sometimes you get an card option (even from an enemy Counterfeit) that you don't realize synergizes with another card and you get a massive turn! I esp. like how quick and lightweight it is, like a Slay the Spire rapid draw and before you can blink twice, it's your turn again. The theme totally works as does the voice acting/sounds for the various card effects. Of course, the Challenge modes and PvP is a great option, but with like 5-6 flavors of AI difficulty you can tune your 5 minutes to your caffeine level. Though the score bar is kinda Tug-O-War esque, probably an early dev idea that stuck around a while, I would love a different Game Title though so itr doesn't read like "Endless Tugs" or "Tugs to Victory". YKWIM.
Game pwns. Really is a tug-of-war. This is an epic design class for budding developers!
This game should win this year because it is endlessly inventive, with great dlc expansions. They could have milked their players, but instead they want to give everyone a chance to enjoy their game. The fact that the game runs flawlessly on both the Steam Deck and Mac OS, with no glitches or compromises that I could find, is amazing. One of the best, and most unique, deck builders I've ever played. True to its namesake, there is an actual tug of war going on with every turn. The deck building is solid, with very interesting cards. The "pool" system of choosing each player's "market" is also very unique. I've never seen its like. To summarize the system: all unlocked cards from each player are thrown into a pool, then the computer randomly decides which cards to pull and who gets them. So, you could get an opponent's card, and the opponent could get your card. If this were all there was to it, it'd be a terrible system. But, there's also medals in the game. You earn these medals just by playing. Sometimes by completing a specific objecting, sometimes by winning, sometimes by losing, sometimes just by playing. You are constantly getting these medals. You can assign these medals to each card you have unlocked, and those medals modify how the computer picks the cards from the pool. You can use some medals to give cards an increased chance of being drawn (and given to you), and likewise you can also choose other medals to decrease the chance of a card being drawn from the pool (and if it is, a greater chance it is given to your opponent). You can also ignore the pool and medal systems entirely and just choose "mirror match". If both players choose that, then there is no randomness and both players have the same cards to buy in the match. I'm really glad I was able to "summarize" that. It makes for easy reading I'm sure. So, you've got super interesting cards, a great deckbuilding engine to play with, and unique market choosing systems. All of that would be for naught if the game wasn't fun. Thankfully, it's crazy good. The titular tug of war system elevates this game beyond any other deckbuilder I've ever played. Most deckbuilders have combat of some sort, but you're generally just fighting against a point total, or semi-permanent cards, or a cooperative situation of you and other(s) fighting against an AI life total or AI cards. You do have plenty of combat in this game too, but instead of fighting directly, you're trying to capture territory on a singular line path (the rope that you are...war tugging over...I guess). It's not just a bar that goes back and forth either. The territory system gives rise to a lot more mechanics. You can place structures on captured territories, which either give you new cards to play or alter your strategy. But, if the opponent retakes that territory, they gain the benefits of your building too! I've written a lot, and I'll just end to say the game also has plenty of modes. There are numerous solo modes (though nothing like a true campaign, at least not yet), and several multiplayer modes as well. Nothing is very sweaty here and there is also a great replay system that everyone can use to watch top matches and learn new strategies. Hope to see you in-game!
There's a lot of Roguelike Deckbuilding experiences you can try, but way fewer traditional, head to head deckbuilding games, and this one was built from the ground up with the advantages of the digital medium which expands the design space AND the strategic depth. This plus best-in-class features such as step-by-step replay systems, seamless queueing (you can freely queue while watching replays or playing AI), and the ability to both play with the DLC if a second player owns it, and play against friends that don't own the game through the demo, makes this a game I will always recommend.
It's not a bad game but for me it misses some points to give it a thumbs up. What bothers me most is that card descriptions lack in precision and consistancy. Sometimes explenations are incomplete. Other times essential infos (like "Build 6" for example) are sourced out into tool tips. So cards have to little text and tool tips too much. I also dislike that some symbols exceed the card frame and that cost symbols are hidden as you hold the card in your hand, even though you need to know them for other effects. It's not breaking the game - you can look things up in the "shop", but it takes away the analog feel of playing a card game. I wanna add thou that these things would be easy to change. Also: Cards in the deck view could have a colored frame on the left side, so you can see right away what type of cards you have in your deck. And: The play-log should offset cards played by yourself, so that it is easier to keep track of who actually played what.
There are many good card games, and they usually copy a few of the greatest ever made. This is a great hidden gem card game that is the trunk of its own tree it seems like few know they should even copy. It's unique feature is linear land capture tug of war instead of hp. It uses this system to the fullest extent of its offered opportunities. Fog of war, building on the land your fighting for, neutral land assets, traps. There are other unique features as well to this game, but they are smaller facets. The come together is smooth. People who will get the most out of this game are players looking to play pvp. However the AI and challenges are not brain dead or push over easy. At the price it would be worth it for the challenges and PVsAI alone as it delivers a unique game play experience that i think most people looking for a card game that feels like more than remixed MTG will enjoy. (also i played about 30 hours of this off steam on new grounds)
My favorite game! Amazing mechanics, high replayability and tons of possible card combinations. A great brain workout! I"ve spent thousands of hours in this game but since I play on mobile phone Steam does not count those hours. My in-game nickname is matka :)
