Kohate is an exploration, stealth horror game that is published and developed by DarkStone Digital. A game which piqued my interest through Curator Connect, a free game key with the intention to play and review. I was honestly surprised; I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did, such a pleasant experience. The game is set in a distant future where overpopulation has become a massive problem along with the higher crime rates. Law enforcement started to be stricter on their rules, which led to more arrests. It could be as little as dropping some litter or moving at a slower pace to everyone else which is what happened to Nathan Stewart, the character you play as. However, this soon led to the prisons being overcrowded, to fix this the government came up with a solution to sell all the new prisoners to the highest bidders. After being arrested and bought by BioMass Labs, you are transported to their secret testing facility in deep space. Pros: • Interesting storyline. • Smooth gameplay and mechanics. • Puzzles are straight forward that anyone can do, nothing complex. • Doesn’t reply on jump scares. • Offers more gameplay than price. • A dev that cares about their community, listens to feedback and updates their game. • Multiple endings. Cons: • Some parts of the facility can be pitch black which makes it hard to explore. • The monster design wasn’t great, nothing terrible but could be improved. • The monster has a set pattern it follows, meaning once you know the pattern it is easy to avoid it. If it could adapt to your playstyle and your objectives it would make it a lot more challenging. • Only has one level, would have liked to see multiple levels of testing with facing different threats for that level. • Very short, can be completed in 15minutes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2274378722 I found the gameplay to be very similar to that of Alien: isolation, you are being hunted by a creature that has been released on the facility. You can distract it, but you cannot kill it, you just have to avoid it. You can do this by crawling through vents, the facility doesn’t offer any spots that you can hide in apart from that. Whilst avoiding the creature you must solve puzzles and complete the objectives that are given to you. Game modes The game can be played in two game modes, scenic or hell. The difference between the two being that one has the monster and one does not. I feel like you can play the scenic mode and it still have a scary experience. It’s also nice to have this if you are wanting to get the multiple endings, it makes it a lot easier to run through knowing that you’re not being hunted. Subject 2 When you first know about the subject’s presence it’s haunting and stressful but after your first encounter it that feeling soon goes away, you are no longer scared of it. It does move at a rapid pace, at your running speed or even faster so it’s best just to hide and avoid it. The movement for it looks weird and it doesn’t look scary at all, it mostly relies on the atmosphere and soundtrack to give that fearful experience. Puzzles The game gives a range of different puzzles which are straight forward and easy. You often get an object from it which could be needed for another puzzle or to unlock another location. Some puzzles you do are optional, and others are needed to progress with the story or to get the multiple endings that the game offers. Bio read station Every 10 minutes you are required to go to a bio read station, this works as a checkpoint area. There isn’t a lot scattered around the map, the main one being in the blood testing lab. When you are over your 10-minute mark you will hear your collar beeping which means you have roughly a minute to get to one or else will be euthanized. This can be very irritating especially if you are not near an area which has one or if you are being chased. If you do end up getting euthanized, you will spawn from the latest checkpoint often with the items you had before you died. Data blocks Once completing puzzles, you can sometime find data blocks which you can take back to your lab and listen to them. Some offer some extra backstory to the game, explains what the facilities intentions are, as the only other backstory you get is the 5-minute dialogue at the start of the game. While others will give some useful information and tips. You can always go back at any time and relisten to them by simply clicking the data blocks. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2274378906 Sound The sound was great, you have these ambient sounds throughout the game which will give you much scarier experience than the creature does. It’s also very helpful, you can hear the creature's footsteps, so you know when it’s close and when to avoid it. The creature will also make a screeching sound when it has found you, then kicks in some fast-paced action music while being chased, this lasts until you have managed to lose it. The voice acting was amazing as well and is done by the developer who narrates you through the game. Graphics The games graphics are amazing especially for the price of the game, there’s so much thought and detail that’s been put into it. The only problem I have with the visuals is that the creature doesn’t look as good as everything else but apart from that the visuals look amazing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2274378768 During my time playing I didn’t experience any bugs or issues. Pricing I was expecting the game to be terrible especially due to the small price tag, but I was wrong, it’s most definitely under-priced especially for the playtime you can get from the game. I know the game is short, however it offers multiple playthroughs for its multiple endings. Would I recommendKohate? Yes. Kohate is a short yet fun horror experience, the first game I have played by DarkStone Digital and after playing this, I will most definitely check out their other projects and would gladly support any future projects that they develop. It has a very interesting storyline and takes place in the same universe as their other titles, which is confirmed by the developer. I would love for them to expand and explore on the universe that they have created. If you like exploration, solving puzzles and horror games then this a game you should definitely think about picking up especially due to the small price tag that they are asking for.
Information / Review English
Kohate is a gripping First-person survival horror game developed by DarkStone Digital.
Gameplay / Story
The story takes place at a time when unscrupulous emergency services are monitoring the galaxy, fueled by greed for money and arrests. The more prisoners mean the more money. The greed for power and money means that even a small crime, regardless of whether it is theft, leads to imprisonment, i.e. a lottery for the responsible officials to get quick money. So high arrest rates led to more and more money, but all prisons in the area are quickly overcrowded and there is no more space for new prisoners. So they came up with something new to get some quick money. Slave trade is now in the first place and people are sold like animals to the most offered. Many are also arrested by a company called BioMass Labs for one purpose only, as guinea pigs in a distant facility called Kohate. Everyone who went there until then has never returned, and we don't know what happened to them either, but one thing should be clear, terrible things are going on there. Your goal in Kohate is to solve different tasks and to hide yourself from not being seen. You also have to uncover the secret of this facility and put an end to it. But be careful, if you are seen, run for your life. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2277977361
Pro
+ nice look & lighting + Attention to detail is present + Level design is excellent in every way too + good actors exude professionalism + no FPS drops + great interface + Achievements
Contra
- short playing time - overpowering opponent https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2277977408
Conclusion
Kohate brings you survival horror with an atmosphere of constant threat and mortal danger. Clear buy recommendation for those who like this genre. PS: First of all, many thanks to the developer who provided us with this key for the group.
Information / Review Deutsch
Curator page here--> DaRevieweD #49 <-- New review every Sunday
That son-of-a-gun DSD's gone and done it again! He took my smeared brain matter from my playthroughs and obsession, mind you- most notably of Our Secret Below (OSB), INNER and he reconstructed them using some advanced tech! Being a patron of his work, seeing his tireless efforts in creating meaningful yet underrated haunting experiences has been inspiring! I own all of his games to date, although two were graciously given by him (including this)but I'd happily fork some dough out for this and that's saying something!! The only one I haven't completed is "The Subject" which since Kohate's set in the same universe- could this help me lean towards or swear off the latter~
"Deep Space Dungeon"
The Gist: Nathan Stewart's sentenced for "crimes" he didn't commit. But perhaps that's the least of his worries... Due to prison overcrowding- he's instead shuttled off to an intergalactic station somewhere and subjected to some, rather unsavory tasks. How would, or rather how far CAN he go??
! Please Let Me Off- Just This Once!!

[+] PROS;
(a) Lab Rat Given the basic acclimation to the rules and tasks expected of you- the facility is yours to explore. Feel sick, even stressed out by this maze type situation where you wander down corridors, scurry into radiation-filled vents and wary of your ticking timer, requiring you to constantly check in (& reset) before you are considered rebellious. Simple enough right? Well now throw in a patrolling potato sack once you get used to the controls. Believe it or not, the game used to be much more unforgiving~ (b) Criminal Injustice Set in the distant future, where the population has skyrocketed and more extreme, unethical measures required to get them down to a manageable amount. That's where the solution Kohate, comes in and uses these newly-acquired convicts on the down low. I thought to myself, this is a dark, grim picture but it could be possible (maybe I've been in the tests too long)! However could this end!!? There are four endings; some gratifying and others just plain sadistic but all not quite what you were hoping for.. Whichever it will be is up to you, all you need to do is comply. Trust me~ (c) Taxpayer Dollars' Investment The immersion is top notch! Not a lot of 1st-person perspectives achieve this. The added "experiment" element and being lost, with only a voice over the speaker to instruct you on what to do. Or how each blood sample drawn from the shady contraptions will inflict you with some woozy filters that also hinder your sight and hearing, for about 10s but that's enough!! This is probably wrong to admire, but the place actually looks pretty nice, considering. There's even a seasonally decorated safe-hub for you to customize the lighting, have epic pillow fights, laze around or listen to the data blocks that reveal some more damning neglect. (d) PR Nightmare HORROR TIME! Okay, the monster may be your stereotypical abomination... BUT, I admit I was very reluctant to play with the monster enabled at first (well done Brian). Because of all the frustrated reviews about how it's so annoying. Thankfully, you can play on "scenic" mode- that's what I did, where the monster is absent and you can familiarize yourself with the minimal puzzles, item placements as well as play the game to completion- up to a point that is. But surprise
it's required for an ending!
The scariest thing about it? Firstly, the idea of how a corporation can have such utter disregard for human life. Oh wait, I forgot prisoners are the scum of society.. my bad!! It's even worse when the charges are trumped for the sake of it! The excessively policed nature of crime in this dystopian far-off disenchantment is reminiscent of how crime and subsequently punishment is decided in our very own society. Don't even get me started on how the conspiracy goes beyond this institution alone. Touching on corruption and the morally objectionable nature of human beings. Then the atmosphere, the general feel of the highly artificial setting is distressing enough- there aren't any windows, no one else to talk to.. The ones running this operation are detached from their subjects, making jokes and taking lightly despite the gravity (at least to Nathan) of the situation. Finally the power relations. Yeah, it goes without saying- I suddenly recalled Pavlov's influence on the red buttons XD but mostly Milgram's experiment on obedience and it struck me like a truck. Okay, the analogy doesn't work THAT well. But still, the implications follow? Haven't there been others before me!? What do I do... It's also feasible
the experiment is a simulation. Every time you "die" is just a reset

[-] CONS;
(i) Blame The System Trying to think of a monster joke... But it's already one! XD So the monster is easily bamboozled and I only got caught because I wanted to see what happens~ But during a chase it's sort of omniscient- in that it knows where you're gonna go sometimes, despite going in a vent. It relies mostly on sight so sprinting with its back turned against yours is a go! It does react to sound like when I throw my light orb but only when really nearby. The limp and groans of it is just shuddering but he gets snared up by walls all too often or onto objects I drop. And I cannot unsee it. Honestly, Kohate would've been better off without it because I think The Subject did this too. (ii) Tastes Like Foot At first, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality voice acting this game had!! While the data blocks still exhibit that- I can't help but wonder why the protagonist (voiced by promising Brian Watts) suddenly became a mute. Which makes for some awkward scenarios when the situation becomes high-stakes and therefore lacking of character. It wasn't said, but it is possibly due to the mouth guard and or a combination of the side-effects of the blood sample machine. Which is cool, I suppose~ (iii) All The Drugs Finally, the at-times annoying interface. I'm referring of course to when I replay (or got new) data blocks and they have to be automatically played till finish each time! You also can't pause or switch between blocks willy nilly... So aim carefully with the minuscule interaction cursor. Speaking of, interacting alone can have your adrenal-glands swollen and picking up objects needs precise aiming & movements!
"Don't Stop Defying"
Bottom line, Kohate's another fine, meticulous horror title from DSD, with some deeply disturbing thoughts on the amoral treatment when it comes to inmates or the rigged system of criminal justice as a whole. As is the dev's signature; the experimental gameplay and equally nerve-wracking possible outcomes are maybe the side-effects that will not be flushed from your system anytime soon. Given the $5 price, it's understandably a "brief" and overexposed set-in-space ordeal, but it never put me off me though it was T E S T I N G... And no it ain't an Alien clone, because that would be misleading for the monster is nothing short of a meat bag with no functioning brain. Other noticeable issues to pick at- the protagonist being silent after the game starts or some other interface constraints. But what's the point in assigning blame or fixating on the price when the final experience is this enjoyable, well-written and hard-hitting? Yes even more so when the monster pummels you~
8.5/10
Check out entire "DSD Collection" and look forward to being his delectable, highly anticipated "Mortuary Assistant"!
The sequel to The Subject with the same frustrations. You can thankfully disable the monster, but the environment is way too big and confusing to play without an onscreen map. Your life is on a timer that you must reset, so you have to wander around until you get back to your base to recharge. Good luck getting back to wherever it was you were before you started running out of life. Plus it is dark and you can barely see anything unless you have the flashlight, which you can only carry if you don't need to carry anything else. No save function either. All of this makes for a frustrating exploration/puzzle game.
I was a big fan of The Subject, from DSD, and this installment is no different. Kohate is a wonderful and quick game that provides a nice challenge and fun achievements. There are still some things that I'm figuring it out but I'm finding it more and more fun to speedrun the game. I've enjoyed playing with and figuring out the quirks that this little game has to offer. Well worth the price and a great easy gift for your friends that enjoy casual (or hell mode) puzzles. I've already gifted it twice.
pretty cool "sequel" to The Subject (which was amazing btw) Not totally a fan of the length on this one since the first 2-3 main endings can be gotten in less than 1.5 hours of playtime total and the third and 4th require two MORE additional playthroughs to see (or just find them on youtube) Really love the universe and but think The Subject is a much better project overall I do love that you're able to switch off the monster completley since these "avoid monster while doing so-and-so puzzles" games i really really hate Overall I'd give this a 6.5/10 but The Subject 8.5/10
The lack of saving of any kind doesn't work for me. Nice visuals, sounds, spooky atmosphere and smooth movement aren't enough to save (pun intended) it. No save feature, plus the lack of puzzles (like in the superior "The Subject") ruins the whole experience for me. I really don't get some developers' fixation with "in-one-sitting" games. How about letting the PLAYER decide HOW they're going to play the game, in order to maximize individual experience. Sorry, I really wanted to like this but it has to be thumbs down for me.
Length 1hr + Multiple Endings ‘Kohate’ is effectively a shortened version of ‘The Subject’, it fixes all the problems in ‘The Subject’ though at the same time strips most of the puzzles out of the game. ‘Kohate’ is mainly an exploration game, you will be looking through a test spaceship having to find different items on the ship. This will mainly be blood samples and recordings, though you will need other items to access more of the ship. The game has multiple endings and by exploring you can find other ways to end your time on the test ship. The game is well laid out, finding items is easy, panels that can be interacted with stand out and it is easy to understand what items you need. While it takes a little while to explore and there are a lot more red buttons to press, the game's puzzles and layout are concise and well designed. The most trouble I had while playing was dropping my light sphere which has a tendency to roll off into strange places. On the ship there's a monster that will chase you, the best way I found to disengage was hiding in vents. It was a little more tedious while ‘The Subject’ was a massive map, at times it was rare to come across it. ‘Kohate’ is a lot smaller, and repeatedly I would run into it and hide in a vent just for it to come across me again a little later and I would have to go back to hide. While it was not overly annoying it did slow down the game. The one thing I have barely mentioned is the story, ‘Kohate’ as one of the darkest Corporatist Dystopian stories and the interconnection with the other two games makes for a really interesting Dystopia. Literally the games story could simply be ‘Beyond Slavery without extra steps’. The world is really interesting and has been one of the more captivating dystopian stories I would love to see more of. Overall ‘Kohate’ was a fun puzzle game, it takes a while to understand how to explore but the map really helps you work out what has been done. A really interesting narrative, and overall a fun game with more red buttons to press.
