It's games like this where I would rather give the game mixed instead of thumbs up or down. I made music for Tron in 2005-2007. The music was taken. We got NIN instead of Skrillex and Deadmau5, the 'Steve' guy didn't want new music in Tron. I made the Nin Tron, wondering why he turned the last work I would do as Deadmau5 or Skrillex into death. When I bought Tron:Identity I expected a story that was flowing, and moving. It feels more like reading a Zork book. Which to me says 'Steve' wants that. I have to give it a thumbs up, it's something I wanted. In reality I would rather have a FPSMMORPG of Tron. It's good enough, and it's Tron.
Bithell's Tron protagonists are all black. There were literally no black people in the original game. Science Fiction is about white guys kicking ass in space and getting space chics. If you remember the AMAZINGLY SUCCESSFUL movie, that's what happened. Actually white people do have culture, and it's called Sci-Fi and video games.. This is cultural appropriation. This "game" is a sad little graphical novel. Disney middle management hated this franchise and they spent more time on the credits than on the actual game. It's not even a game, it's a boring story with a pointless puzzle. I can't explain how much I hate Disney and the people who co-opted successful American culture to replace it with this trash. Why not write new stories instead of wiping axx with existing franchises? No new stories because no soul, no groove, and no rythm. No heros, nothing worth fighting for. It's culturally a dead-end. A drowning swimmer ruthlessly plunging everything it can grab for one more breath of air. A sterile parasite trying to find another host. Game dev DEI middle management. That's what I felt when I played this game. Luckily, I can return it.
Eh, fun for what it is - a short graphical novel, wouldn't recommend paying more than $5 for it. Severely lacking in traditional features like Save/Load or rewinds. No idea if choices can even be imported in the new one.
Before You Buy Firstly, I highly recommend playing this game before buying Tron Catalyst. This game is currently on sale for sixty six percent off while Catalyst costs close to forty Canadian dollars and is made by the same dev team. So if you like this game, buy Catalyst, but if you don’t, don’t buy Catalyst. I just wanted to say this upfront to prevent people from falling into the hype of new Tron content only to be disappointed and out forty dollars when it could have been ten. Please follow that advice. What I Didn’t Like A Tron game as a visual novel is already a red flag in my opinion. The game is about solving a mystery, but there is no real detective work on your part. You are just going through the story. The Identity Disk puzzle takes you out of the story and feels like pointless padding to increase playtime without any logical sense. No cutscenes, just 3D models in sight with ambience, no voice acting, just the bare bones of a visual novel. The story didn’t make sense to me. Nothing really sticks out. Nobody interested me except maybe the automata. I don’t understand why these characters were made. Query, who is the main character in this game and is in the next game as a side character, shows this is a series, so this game is basically a test for Catalyst. I played through all the endings which just decide who lives or dies, but nothing really changes the story. You wouldn’t or couldn’t tell the difference. What Could Be Better It would have been better if the gameplay was real detective work. Games like Death Mark with animation and better gameplay work much better for this style. The lack of cutscenes and voice acting makes it feel bare and disappointing. Final Thoughts In my opinion, I would not recommend this game to anybody. I personally think it is a waste of time. For people saying “support new Tron content,” I don’t know what to say to them, I really feel for them. But we should not pay for slop like this with our hard-earned money to a mega corporation who lent out their license to this dev team. I will stand by that even after playing through the Catalyst demo. I think the same problems I saw here apply there as well. Do not defend this slop.
i really loved the aspect of it being a visual novel. tron isnt the kind of franchise that would really need one but regardless, im currently enjoying this quite a lot.
A genuinely lovely little visual novel experience. Set in a wholly different Grid, the Arq Grid, TRON Identity expands on some of the concepts of the TRON universe without straying too far from established material. Investigation of the central mystery is simple, and revolves around characters and dialogue first, and everyone has motives and beliefs that make them feel fleshed out, and can affect how you wish to talk to certain characters if you want to get information or help from them. Similarly simple puzzles are used throughout, with optional objectives if you want to scratch your head a bit trying to solve them in a particular way. It's very much a focused experience, with a solid soundtrack to boot. It's short and sweet, and leaves some room to must about various topics, including the nature of information, neutrality, and more. Definitely worth a shot.
Quick to get through, the mystery is interesting, the story is neat for the world building. Lots of reading involved though and no audible dialogue.
