I don't write reviews much so apologies in advance. My first impressions of Tri-Star are positive for the most part since it takes the feeling of old arcade horizontal shooters but with adding a bit of fun extra flavor to it. Every new run you can pick 3 ships to use for your play through all with their own unique style of bullet patterns and specials/bomb types. There is also a "warp/blink" that has it's own resource charge bar helping to add some fun movement to the game. You can earn money for upgrades and items from destroying enemies and asteroids etc. which I think is a good incentive for kills rather than it just count as points to help get a new high score. Each ship is different so you're able to upgrade them all with how you want granted you have the resources. There are unlockables in the game too like new items and ships adding to the replay value. Overall the game is simple enough yet the difficulty I feel is in a good middle for this type of game with the variety of enemy units and their attack patterns. A fun game to play for quick short breaks but includes long run goals like fully maxing out your ships or being top of the boards. The only thing I had a problem with was the backdrop feeling too distracting for me at times otherwise the game plays smooth. Edited: As of 11/24/2021 - The dev added in a feature to turn down background brightness as well as a some other fun stuff like new unlockable ships :)
Top quality Og style space shooter, Fun and unique bosses and enemies. super addicting......
Super fun game with a lot of replay value. P.S. Green ship is best waifu.
Horizontal space shooter. Decent controls. Arcade style with interesting roguelike mechanic. Various ships and abilities to upgrade. Stylized presentation and okay audio. Some visibility issues. A solid shmup with good action, plenty of unlockables and a consistent challenge. The dev has been releasing regular updates with more content and features, and each one has made the game better and better.
It’s a pretty fun and original shooter game reminiscent of Galaga. What makes it good is it’s customization of ships and team composition. Each ship has it’s own way of firing, and a different sub weapon, so the choice of ships aren’t merely cosmetic. It also has a sick soundtrack which is definitely a bonus. The sprite work is well done, I wasn’t confused as to what was what. Overall it’s a pretty great game with multiple modes that you could play over and over again. Well done
Tri-Star overall rating 38/50 Why? let me elaborate the points rating system i have for reviews. (5 points is the lowest you can earn 10 is my maximum rating in that category respectively) 5 is kind of a pity score 6-10 is really where review and rating comes in. -Visuals- 7 points "The game is pixel like taking some inspiration from classic top down and 2D side scrolling space shooter games, the sprites look well put together frame for frame. The game looks really smooth for what it's worth at face value but some projectiles, and ships i will admit might look and move strange barring bugs or intentional design this game is well advertised as being a bullet hell roguelike experience." -Gameplay- 8 points "it's playable for what you're doing and getting yourself into you have great controls that allow you to warp, you can put yourself in good position to deal more damage to enemies or avoid the onslaught of projectiles. Bonus controls are indeed MAP ABLE. The bosses have very nice difficulty to them you won't realize till you go through a few of them with or without losing a ship since there is a really solid skill curve to understand and overcome overall pretty nice execution. Play time wise you can definitely see yourself putting in a couple hours here or there and probably getting to hour 5 or 10 if you're playing it to beat the whole game." -Pricing- 7 points "9.99 is a decent upper middle ground for indie roguelike games, on sale the price can go as low as 7.99 or even 6.99 respectively. Does the game justify the value and worth yes for anyone who wants to add a solid roguelike space shooter to their library if they're into the genre, for most people who disagree or agree this is definitely worth it on sale for sure. -developer- 10 points "for their first release things have been pretty smooth. Notice the game recently has been updated since it's release that's a good sign now i don't know much about their personnel or the size of their team but if them dropping updates with decimals mean anything it looks like the game will be getting bug fixes, and quality of life updates alone just reading through the first update you know they're attentively adding and fixing their game that is a really good sign." -Audio- 6 points "Audio may or may not be that important to you but to me it's important to understand how much sound design and effort was put into the game. Now i'm not to sure how much of sound was reused or flipped assets like the sound effects for projectile, ship noises, impact noises, etc they could be sourced from something and that's fair and fine it's difficult to develop something from nothing. The sound track is nice it loops a lot throughout a level and boss fight i do wanna be honest but i'm curious to know what the full sound track looks like. Maybe add a jukebox function in the options so you can listen to a specific track or maybe a unlock able feature could be adding joke sound effects to the game replacing the current assets with acapella noises or beatboxing adding some layer or creativity and humor to the sound design." -verdict- High recommend
Addicting and fun as hell. This isn't a walk in the park point farm for you to play and feel good about yourself, you will WORK for everything you get in this game. There's unlockable content and achievements to strive for all the while making it your top priority to get to the furthest wave possible. Whether you're gaming casually or plan on putting in real hours to this game, I feel it's a great edition to anyone's library.
If you are up for a challenge than this game is for you Tri-Star was my introduction to the "bullet hell" genre and it is unforgiving to newcomers. What makes it difficult is the fact that after you die, your ship changes and so does its play-style/strategy. It makes it to where you aren't allowed to navigate your ship through a level based off memory since depending where you die, the next ship will make you approach waves of enemies differently. Depending how much of a challenge you want will very how much you will enjoy this game. If you are looking for something more casual like space invaders or galaga then I would stay away from this game. Like I said this game is for those who want a challenge.
Fun and cute game to hyper fixate on. If you enjoy(ed) space invaders, galaga and the likes you'd probably like this one as well. Also, my ADHD is vibing with the music a bit too hard *chefs kiss*.
