I had fun with this one. I played this right off the back of finishing Scarlet Curiosity (it's a direct sequel), so my expectations were pretty high. And for the most part, I was pleased with how this game felt. This was also my first experience with Sumireko! I enjoyed her character a lot. The story is simple. Sumireko Usami, a human from the outside world, finds a way to enter Gensokyo using an artifact called the Occult Ball. But by doing so, she inadvertently sends both worlds on a collision course with one-another. It is up to Reimu Hakurei, the Hakurei Shrine Maiden, to save the day. The gameplay is almost identical to that of Scarlet Curiosity. There are a few mechanical changes, like each skill having its own cooldown timer instead of a universal one that effects all skills. The number of skills have been decreased between games as well. In SC, you had a large variety of skills that you could customize to make your own unique build for Remi & Sakuya. Here, you have a small handful, making customization much more limited. The world map has been changed as well, the world of Gensokyo feeling much more expansive this time around. There are even side quests now! The music is exceptional. A lot of returning tracks from SC, and a lot of new ones made for this game. My favorite track from this game is Doremy's theme, it's oddly imposing compared to the rest of the game. The achievement grind was tolerable. Most of the achievements you'll get by just playing the two main scenarios. Splitting achievements up between Reimu & Marisa was a good way to ensure players see both scenarios, as with SC a lot of people just played Remi's route, and unfortunately didn't stick around to play Sakuya's. This was a good choice, even if I couldn't finish Marisa's route myself (more on that below). The achievement I had the most trouble with was the "Reach lvl 40" achievement. The final superboss is just so stupid hard, especially with THAT spellcard attack (you know the one), so grinding her out for levels was a frustrating experience. BUT, when I finally learned her patterns, it filled me with immense satisfaction, so it wasn't all bad. None of the other achievements were frustrating. Alright, here's a section of things I didn't like. - My biggest gripe with this game is honestly the fact that DLC characters don't get their own scenarios. I understand WHY they don't, as that'd take an incredibly long time to add in considering all the characters the DLC added, but I was really looking forward to seeing how Flan or Youmu would handle Sumireko's appearance. A bit of a letdown, but not enough to hamper my enjoyment of the game. - Speaking of characters, this game reminded me that I don't like Marisa as a character. I couldn't finish her route to completion, and once I got the last achievement I needed on her route I dipped. I get that a good character has flaws, but in almost every one of her fights I was rooting for her downfall. - This was also an issue in Scarlet Curiosity, but money really doesn't have much meaning. I only spent money on the things I needed to for achievements, but other than that I don't think I spent any money in any of the three routes. You just find so many items (even when my item drop rate was <10%, enemies would still drop them frequently) that anything Nitori has to sell is outclassed by a drop I found two missions prior. I would have rather spent money on the stat upgrades instead of needing a specific currency for them. - The reforging area is almost identical to Terraria's reforging system, where you spend money for a random reforge on a piece of equipment. Unfortunately, due to the insane drop rates for items, you're likely to just find gear with good stats and won't need to reforge other items at all. Great concept, but I had trouble finding a reason to use it. Overall, it's a good game. Not as good as SC in my opinion (probably because I'm a major Scarlet Devil stan, and Remi having her own game was phenomenal), but still a lot of fun. Sumireko is an interesting character that I'm going to look more into now. Give it a play if you enjoyed Scarlet Curiosity, or if you're looking for a good Touhou fangame.
Great for improving in any bullet hells! I personally use this since terraria since i play modded.
I missed seeing Sakuya Izayoi giving me advice and doing a dab.
I think it's worth playing despite what criticisms I'd levy against it. I think maybe Scarlet Curiosity set my expectations too high. I really like that game and I still think this game is quite good. "Feels like I've done this before" is my prevailing feeling about this game after finishing the first two games in the series right before it. Given the age of those games and the team size of the developer I don't feel like complaining about all the repeated level geometry and boss fights is entirely fair. I think if you skipped straight to the DLC campaign which the game recommends you don't do you might like this game even more if you've just played the first two games. The vanilla campaign (I played the Reimu one) feels like more of the same which starts to wear thin while the DLC introduces new mechanics and mission objectives for levels that you've done before and more importantly lets you switch characters if you don't like your default abilities (I didn't really like Reimu's abilities and you can't swap characters until after the main story is over in the vanilla campaign). Equipment customization did not improve from the second game other than adding one more stat. I think the overhead the equipment system adds and the time you spend managing it (selling junk, comparing stats) and gambling to most likely not improve what you already have isn't worth the complexity it provides. Ability levels being independent across characters (mainly relevant for the DLC) also isn't great. If you want to try a new character for something hard deep in the game they'll come in with low level abilities compared to whoever you were just using unless you want to just use Flan and win. I like the story, it's obvious a lot of research went into it. When I saw the radio tower in the forest of magic and the ropeway to Moriya shrine on the world map I was overjoyed. I think it loses a bit of its luster when you figure out why it's possible for the DLC to happen "after" the vanilla campaign but independently they're still enjoyable. Cool games, I hope there's another in the future.
Super Duper fun, had a great time, i recommend :)
