Tough Love Arena is the best beginner fighting game experience
Great fighting game, beginner-friendly, fun characters, cute design, and completely free to play on their website browser with rollback netcode. Wave-dab-dashing. Amazing.
wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone. if you play fighting games, are interested in accessible fighting games, or are newcomer to the genre this game is for you 5 buttons for input, super easy to learn and hard to master. the dev is super transparent and active with improvements which is something i like There are weekly tournaments so join the discord!
don't let my steam play time fool you, this is a good game and I have put countless hours into at https://toughlovearena.com/
TL;DR: This game is awesome and I highly recommend trying it, even if it's only on the website. It's a game that's still plenty deep if you have experience with the fighting game genre, but also one of the most accessible fighters out there for those new to it in many different ways. It's a very charming game :) Will update later.
I would recommend trying this game out with a friend. The browser version is free and simple in its 4-button control scheme. The rollback netcode is also rock solid, but the few people still playing online are not exactly beginners anymore. I love TLA, but I think it's in a tough spot where it doesn't quite target FGC newcomers. Instead, it primarily appeals to people who already understand Fighting Games. There's an unexpected depth to TLA's mechanics, and discovering that depth will be easier if you have the right people to play against.
I love the game this game! It's all about the fundamentals with a splash of weirdness. You may recognize an archetype but with a fun twist, like a zoner with combos or a grappler that can deal insane damage without using their grab. The game can be great for new comers but I think it works best with people that have experience with fighting games since they can enjoy it's simple nature way more. In addition, it has modding and I like how simple and intuitive it is to mod the game. It come prepackage with the game. Before the steam release, I spent many months modding the game, and I will continue to. It's a bit limited but you can do some crazy stuff. The game also has 10/10 character design. They are fun, simple, and very distinct. They so memorable, you could draw them from memory just from playing the game for a couple of hours.
wonderful introduction for people who want to play fighting games
Tough Love Arena is an interesting beast: originally born as a browser game with rollback netcode, it has now been ported to PC. The gameplay has barely changed in comparison to the original version - but that's not an issue. TLA is one of the most accessible fighting games for newcomers, with simplified inputs but enough stuff happening on screen - including a free cancel system akin to Guilty Gear's Roman Cancel mechanic - that you always need to stay on your toes. This port to PC works without real issues and, for the price it is sold at, is definitely worth a shot. In terms of technical requirements, I would place it between Fantasy Strike and Street Fighter, leaning more towards the former but with some additional actions that make it more demanding in terms of execution.
My wife (who doesn't play any other fighting games) just landed a 6-hit corner combo on me! With 0 time in training mode. This is THE game for getting your non-fighting-game friends into fighting games. The artwork is super appealing. The mechanics are straightforward while still being deep (there's a roman cancel). And it's 100% free on their website! Not free-to-play with microtransactions, actually 100% free.
