Prices
Each in the currency that store quoted — not converted: the gap between two rows is the publisher's pricing, not an exchange rate.
14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
Availability
We put this game to every storefront we collect. A market that answered not sold has told us something about the game; a market we never asked has not, and the two are never drawn the same.
Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 7: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 4.57/day in the week to Aug 16 → 4.86/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Indian overpopulation makes the game crash.
This game is awesome in so many ways, but there are too many issues to recommend it to others. I have never played a game that crashes more than this one. The "AI" is clunky and performs very poorly compared to other Total War games and once you progress too far into a campaign, the game starts to freeze and glitch badly and always has since the beginning.
I love the era in which this game is set. There are some fun, innovative ideas , and it's generally a pleasant experience to manage and advance your faction towards a continent-spanning empire. However, it has the worst AI of any Total War game.

The land battle AI is poor.
Sea battles are slow and monotonous.
Siege battles are just a total mess
And after 30+ turns, the campaign AI is in complete disarray.
Sadly, CA has never bothered to fix any of these issues. Although there are mods that address some of the issues and expand the scope, the AI is so fundamentally flawed that it's essentially unfixable. You can have a great time with this game, but beware — your frustration threshold will certainly be tested!

Empire Total War is like making the world's best cake recipe, then trying to cook it in the cheapest oven you could get, for half the recommended time. The ambition is admirable but the tech of 2009 seems to have undermined much of this game in retrospect. Land battles especially can be painfully janky, especially in the way units interact with terrain. Unit behavior in general can be infuriating, especially with pathfinding and formations. Certainly the worst in any TW game I've played. The way the campaign map is setup is bizarre (one city for almost all France), and likely a consequence of limited tech. Graphics are good up close, but the aggressive pop-in you'll often see is another reminder of how much this game had to do to run well. Naval battles are honestly the best part, and there isn't anything else like them out there on the market. At the time, I'm sure certain measures were necessary to put out such an ambitious game, but they have made the game age worse than its predecessors. While I do recommend Empire for fans of the time period, it is certainly not on the level of Total War "classics" Rome and Medieval 2 6.5/10
