Terror Island
Fort Oasis is no paradise—it's a decaying nightmare where reality crumbles. The creator of Turbo Overkill unleashes survival-horror stacked with mysteries and monstrosities. Scavenge to craft weapons, while a voice on your walkie-talkie guides you into the island's depths.
Story
You play as a coastguard who responds to a distress signal coming from a remote island. After setting out by boat on a rescue mission, something goes wrong during the journey, and you wake up stranded outside the abandoned Fort Oasis. With no clear explanation of what happened, a mysterious voice on the radio guides you toward the island's mines, claiming that the answers you seek can be found there. As you explore the island and uncover its secrets, you begin to piece together the truth behind the strange events surrounding your arrival.
Gameplay
Total Chaos is a first-person survival horror game that combines exploration, resource management, and demanding combat. Hunger plays an important role, as becoming too hungry reduces your stamina and slows down its recovery, making both exploration and combat more difficult. Bleeding is another major mechanic that adds extra pressure. The more you bleed, the less effective healing becomes, while your health gradually decreases and your damage output is reduced. Many items also come with trade-offs; something that restores your health might also increase your hunger or cause you to start bleeding. This forces you to carefully consider when and how you use your limited resources. Combat gives you several defensive options. You can evade into enemies to push them away, use throwable items to distract or stagger them, and parry attacks to create openings. There are also plenty of melee weapons that can be crafted, while firearms provide another option for dealing with enemies. The inventory is extremely large, but you are limited by weight. Carry too much and you become completely unable to move, forcing you to think carefully about what you take with you.
Enemies & Bosses
The game features a good variety of enemy types, each requiring a different approach. Some are fast but fragile, while others attack from a distance by firing projectiles or throwing objects. Certain enemies can immobilize you, leaving you vulnerable, while others behave in more unsettling ways, for example, only moving when you're not looking at them and killing you instantly if they catch you. This variety keeps encounters tense and prevents the combat from becoming too repetitive. There are also several boss battles, and they take a few different forms. Some encounters require you to run and kite the boss while completing objectives, while others are more traditional fights where you have to deal damage while avoiding the boss's attacks.
Environment & Scares
Total Chaos takes place on the desolate island of Fort Oasis. While the levels are mostly linear, they feature a few branching paths, and you'll frequently loop back to previously explored areas after unlocking shortcuts, making the world feel interconnected. The game also features an excellent map system that marks important locations you've already discovered, such as specific rooms, crafting benches, save points, and other points of interest. It makes navigation straightforward without taking away from the tension of exploration. The environments are shrouded in darkness, illuminated by dim or flickering lights that constantly keep you on edge. The game delivers its fair share of effective jump scares, with monsters bursting out from around corners or appearing unexpectedly. However, the real source of fear comes from the oppressive atmosphere. The overwhelming sense of isolation and uncertainty on this abandoned island creates a constant feeling of dread that lingers throughout the experience.
Visual Design & Sound Design
The environments often look like something straight out of a nightmare, especially when you start losing your sanity. Walls and floors can become covered in grotesque, fleshy formations, making the environment feel like it's being consumed by some kind of disease. The enemies are equally disturbing, with unnatural designs featuring elongated limbs, glowing yellow eyes, and grotesque creatures with multiple heads. Their appearances fit the game's nightmarish atmosphere perfectly. The sound design is also unsettling, whether it's coming from the enemies themselves or the ominous musical score. When your character's sanity deteriorates, the music intensifies, further adding to the feeling that you're losing your grip on reality. Each enemy also has its own audio cue, giving you a warning of what might be approaching. Even small details help reinforce the atmosphere, for example, when you become hungry, you can hear your character's stomach growling. It's a simple but effective touch.
Constructive Criticism
One of my biggest complaints is the garbage chute system. I would have preferred something similar to the item boxes from Resident Evil. By the time you reach the end of an area and want to collect everything stored in the garbage chute, you often can't take everything with you anyway because of the weight limit. The crafting system is also unnecessarily confusing. I would much rather have a system where, for example, selecting a sledgehammer would show you a picture of the weapon along with all the parts required to craft it. Instead, each individual item simply tells you which other items it can be combined with, making it harder than necessary to figure out what you actually need. I also expected the Catacombs to be one of the game's biggest horror highlights, but unfortunately, I found them rather underwhelming. The enemies there are very easy to avoid, which takes away much of the tension and makes the area feel less threatening than I expected.
The Verdict
Overall, Total Chaos is an enjoyable survival horror game that started out as a mod for DOOM II. The melee weapons are satisfying to use, although I didn't find the firearms nearly as enjoyable. The game also features several puzzles that I found genuinely enjoyable, providing a nice change of pace from exploration and combat. The crafting and inventory systems could have been considerably better, as both can feel more complicated and restrictive than necessary. However, the enemy variety is strong enough to keep combat interesting, and the game's grotesque environments and unsettling sound design create a consistently creepy atmosphere. The environments can become somewhat repetitive after a while, but there is still plenty to appreciate here. Total Chaos isn't without its flaws, but it delivers a solid survival horror experience with satisfying melee combat, disturbing enemy designs, and an oppressive atmosphere.
Rating: 7/10
Crap game,damn it...
VERY good underrated horror game. The combat is simple but very fun once you learn it, the story is amazing for a small game like this, the inventory/crafting is pretty neat as well. There is like 70+ crafting recipes with hints around the game showing you how to craft the items. I beat the game in about 11 hours playing on the hardest mode (Not newgame+) and it was a fair challenge. You craft your saves by finding broken record discs around the game which is a fun way to save because it forces you to think about where your gonna save. The game also runs great too, i have a 4070 and ran it perfectly fine so take that as you will. Throughout my whole experience, I only ran into 2 bugs which were pretty minor. VERY rarely enemies can hit you through walls but it does not ruin the game for me personally. Overall, Great story, Good gameplay, and amazing storytelling! Would definitely give this a soild 8.5/10.
Combat, inventory system, scripted events/chase sequences are way too clunky for me. Additionally, enemies being able to attack/shoot through walls is incredibly annoying. This is extremely prominent during Chapter 6.
