Tokyo Tatoo Girls is a game Published by NIS And unfotunally, I use the word "game" very loosely here. The Store Page states this game is a Strategy game, but there is barely any strategy involved. Its more akin to an Idle game - Everything happens automatically. Troop movements, Enemy Recruitments, which territories to invade. The only things you can control is using Money to issue commands to reduce friction between factions, insta-recruit Units, refill your Health. Besides that you click caches of Money appearing on the map or gambling dens where you play a (possibly popuar) japanese dice game to increase your cash. The advertised tatoos, while looking pretty sweet (and during the endgame your Partner might seem like a Yakuza) are pretty much a basic Upgrade system. Lose less health when you lose, recruit enemies faster in Territories controlled by Type X, recruit free units faster in Territories that are Y. All the good stuff. I want to like this game, since the character art is beautiful, the Music is really really REALLY good and the voice acting is pleasant to the ears. But unfortunally the gameplay does not hold up this product at all. The Playtime is for one full conquest on Normal, and while there are 5 different Characters to choose from, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, I dont think the gameplay will differ much. I got myself the Soundtrack tho. Because its sweet as heck.
I believe the biggest problem of Tokyo Tattoo girls is it's advertisement. How many of you really knew what you were getting when you bought this game? Did you think you were getting a strategy game similar to Plague Inc.? Not likely. I sure didn't. Before you buy it, all the screens and videos look like this is an eroge visual novel. While it's a bit fan-servicy (all the characters in the game are cute girls and you get to tattoo their backs) it's nowhere near an eroge and the stories are way too shallow and lame to be called a visual novel. As an alternative to Plague Inc. imbedded with Japanses Yakuza culture it's pretty damn decent though. But then... it's fun for about 2 hours. Most people will have been able to beat one route within that time and there's no real reason to continue. I don't know how to unlock higher difficulties but seeing as I have completed several games and still haven't unlocked them I'm pretty sure it's not worth my time. The game is too repetitive for that. I don't understand how Plague Inc. gets such good reviews and Tokyo Tattoo girls gets bad reviews though. While I can't really strongly recommend the game to anyone. Certainly not at 20 euros (I normally don't like to include prices in my reviews but come on, this is too much even for me!) but I can't give it a negative review here because it's simply not a bad game and there are way worse ways to spend a few hours.
Okay my playtime is short, but honestly it was all I could play of this game. Short and sweet it's a game where you play a switchboard operator clicking little buttons here and there. There is no real gameplay besides watching your numbers go up and your enemies numbers go down and occasionally clicking on a region you're in to stop your forces from fighting each other (they needed something to call it gameplay.) Though you better hope you have the money to do the click or else there is a chance you'll lose some Honor (The game's version of health.) And you better hope the skill isn't on cooldown as well, which can get really annoying in the late game. Another frustrating bit was the game wasn't explained in any tutorials or guides so my first few minutes were spent confused and unsure what to do. I had no idea it wasn't turn based until i had noticed it was 12 "days" in. Now when I say there is no gameplay I mean there is No engaging gameplay. My first ward I was excited to fight the ward boss. I used the skill to learn about their ward and their weakness only for it to mean nothing since when you fight a ward boss you get a small little scene with some banter and a "loading" screen animated with a small dust cloud meant to simulate fighting before the ward boss admits defeat. Honestly after the 7 ward I was tired of the gameplay but I persisted and kept going on but it didn't seem like there was a way to lose at that part in the game and honestly beyond the first ward I never paid attention to the wards characteristics or weaknesses since it didn't seem to matter. Maybe it was because I played the game in normal mode and maybe it matters in hard mode. Now the one interesting feature was the tattoo part of the game where you tattoo your heroine to boost her stats which I guess helps, but i never saw anything dramatic in change. So honestly this gets a no go from me. I thought because NIS was publishing it I would be playing a strategic game but it wasn't that and it was not even a resource management game just a game where you click skills and occasionally stop your forces from fighting themselves in order to simulate difficulty and prolong the gameplay. My time played reflects 1 playthrough on normal with 1 of the heroines and honestly I feel no need to ever replay it.
It's like a cell phone game with less activity. Got it in some bundle and super glad I didn't pay (much) for it, because I would've been pissed.
Tokyo Tattoo Girls
Not exactly a fun game. You have some choices, but after a few runs, once you have everything unlocked for that character and need to do the last 4 of your 8 runs (probably in easy mode), it gets tedious to pick the choices. The item warehouse thing doesn't save between runs, so if you have an item that you'd rather not have active, you have to deactivate it every run. Many characters have penalties on their last item (one character does not have any penalties, one has a penalty on a lower difficulty item). This isn't a big penalty for most once you have everything unlocked anyways, but still something to consider. You also have the issue where you have very little control over what happens (invasions). A lot of the game is just waiting and luck and picking a good starting point. You are also not given all the information, so making strategic decisions is harder because you lack the information to do so (while it could be possible to gain the information, it would be difficult and tedious). Tattoos take a long time to process, adding unnecessary length to each run. This is compounded by the 4 extra runs you need to make to complete the achievements list, which seems to be there mostly to add playtime. For the most part, you just idle until you can take an action. The only hard parts are the special conditions (such as 500.000 PM) and A rank (which can be done on easy). Collecting all the images for each character (appears to be the same image) is a matter of picking the 'right' choice for each character, which should only take 3 runs per character in a worst case scenario as long as you pick a different answer each time. I was unable to find any skip button, so to do all the achievements, you have to read the same text 8 times. Hope you like clicking.
Appearances are deceiving, so it's easier for me to describe what this game "is not" rather than what it "is". First and foremost, it "is not" fun, and it "is not" recommended by me...nor, as of writing this, by the vast majority of other people that have played and reviewed this game. Despite the stated goal being to conquer a map consisting of multiple districts, this "is not" a strategy game; nearly everything that could involve tactical thinking is automated and out of the player's control. The difficulty curve "is not" balanced, mainly because said automation makes success or failure feel completely random even when the odds AREN'T stacked against you. The story and characterization "is not" deep; every character has a single-note personality, with all but your chosen protagonist showing up just once per run (and even the protagonists are just "the cat girl", "the wannabe movie star", etc.). And 100% Achievements requires FOURTY-EIGHT RUNS through these nearly identical story lines (which, with only 4 difficulty levels, means you'll either play each mode twice per girl or slog through a total of 24 Easy-Mode runs), which "is not" worth your time or effort. The only "is" that I'm willing to state is that the art "is" nice. I suggest saving your cash, and just browsing the screenshots.

Pros Cons

Lovely artwork
Can see a bit of butt and side-boob in the tattoo menu
Steam Trading Cards

Too many random elements and hidden information to fit the definition of a Strategy game
Bland characters
Tedious to unlock everything

Tokyo Tattoo girls is a small game developed by Sushi Typhoon Games, a game development branch of the Sushi Typhoon B/Z series movie production company. As a fan of the Sushi Typhoon productions I picked up this game out of curiosity. The gameplay, which is really not portrayed in the promotional material at all, is fundamentally a mix between an idle game and a minimal grand strategy game. Plenty of elements are automated, such as which territories are invaded. You as a player can use a series of commands to speed up the process and keep yourself safe, as you have a honor meter that essentialy functions as HP. It's a pretty mediocre formula, to be honest. The aesthetics, however, are great in general. While the anime designs of the characters may not be much, this game is extremely japanese both in terms of visuals, musics, world and dialogues. The entire game is based around the yakuza and their iconic tattoo culture. While the game in essence is not terrible, I would not consider it worth the base price. Most importantly, it was not what I expected from the Sushi Typhoon name. Though I'm looking forward for (hopefully) new games from the studio more on the Sushi Typhoon style.
