Today my review will be quite short as there is not much to write about – not in a bad way, mind you. I do not even remember how I came across Tokyo Snap, to be honest, and I cannot say that there was anything in particular that caught my attention. Except for character design, maybe. The game stayed in my library for some time until today I finally decided to give it a try. And I should say, it was a short but lovely experience! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1870816181
What I liked about the game
You will play as a fashion photographer looking for new models on the streets of bright Tokyo. You have just 7 days to complete your portfolio and post it online to get as many likes and followers as possible. Almost every day a new technique will be introduced that will force you to take your photos more and more carefully – if the first day has hardly any requirements, the last one will ask for at least 5 at the same time, such as beautiful backgrounds, eye contact, etc. And do not forget about limited time and number of photos! Also, there are several characters to choose from – starting with cute lolita Ami and ending with shy Sanaya. All of them have their own unique style that you need to keep in mind as fashion trends are important. As you can see, the gameplay is quite simple. There are no hidden pitfalls – you just follow the rules and take beautiful photos. If you do everything right, you can earn a lot of followers who will also leave positive comments under your works. I should also mention that I got surprisingly invested in the whole process and was even a bit sad when the last day came. Another interesting feature is talking to your models. You can learn more about each of them, follow their story line, and even change their lives. Just several photos can do a lot of good, as it turns out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1870815603 I think character designs are lovely – they are unique, colorful, and quite different from each other. Yes, there are not that many models in total, but I remember all of them well enough even after the game. Background characters are all grey and faceless, as they should be in a game like this, so there is nothing much to say about them, really. The background is also rather simple; shapes mostly and minimalictic as much as it could be without looking outright plain. Tokyo Snap is a short game: one playthrough takes just about 30 minutes. And it took me 1.5 hours to complete all achievements. On the one hand, this is not really much, yes. But on the other hand, the game would become so boring if it was longer – simply because of the simple gameplay. Also, if you decide to see all models’ stories, you will definitely need more than just 1.5 hours. The last but not least: music. Well, this is not among the game’s stronger features. There are just two tracks – both are good and suit the setting perfectly, but I would love to hear some diversity; for example, different music for each day or some specific scenes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1870815719
Would I recommend it?
So, the most important question is pretty simple: did I enjoy the game? Yes, it turned out to be a surprisingly pleasant experience. I felt like a real fashion photographer on a hunt for beautiful shots, and I definitely enjoyed learning more about my models. Tokyo Snap is a short yet very cute game to relax and have fun. There are no real challenges as soon as you learn how to play, but running around and looking for just the right photo is actually great. And just imagine that pleasant feeling when you finally get the perfect shot! All in all, if you are looking for something serious, challenging, and long, then Tokyo Snap is not your game. But if you want to relax with a simple game during one of your less busy evenings, then you are in the right place.
Amazingly simple yet fun game! Cleared Risako's story and can't wait to play the other ones! Besides what that other reviewer said, the only other thing I think this game needs is some sort of leaderboard for most followers and most likes. Doesn't even have to be online, just a personal scoreboard would be nice. Besides that, this is a really awesome game that's a mix of Pokemon Snap, Papers Please, and visual novels. You start out with the basics, and as the week goes on, it adds new rules and upgrades that enhance/complicate the gameplay (in a good way) such as adding more people to get in your way, adding more memory and other upgrades to the camera, and setting up new rules that can increase your social media presence! I will definitely follow this developer because they seem to make pretty awesome and chill games!
So fashionable, let me take a pic Ah, another photography game to fill that void. This time, a quick little game called Tokyo Snap. Tokyo Snap is a pretty simple game. You are in Tokyo for a week and your whole goal is to raise your following on StreetSnaps. This means taking pictures of some fashionable people out on the streets of Tokyo. You only have a couple minutes to do this, and only a limited amount of photos you can take, so you need to make it count. Mostly everyone on the street you’ll be taking pictures on are not fashionable, represented by just a plain design for their model, but there are a couple of people that are. When they stop, they’ll pop in color, ready for you to take a picture no matter if they know or not. Luckily, they don’t care if you took a picture without permission, but they do have a pose if they do notice you. These guys do move about though, shifting into the plain model like everyone else, so you have to try and get your picture in before then. Or follow them until they stop again. Once you take all of the pictures you can, you can talk to one of them before going to pick your best three pictures to upload. Though, running out of time means not being able to talk to one of them (heads up to anyone doing the achievement for talking to one person all seven days and doing the achievement for running out of time on the last day). Every character does have a quick little story, but you do have to talk to them everyday to see through to the end. You will get likes and followers as long as you take a picture, where they’re the vocal point, of one of the characters. And after that, the next day rolls around and you do this all over. Though, as the days go, you do get opportunists to get more likes. This does seem to be gated by your follower count in some way, but you will get messages that will unlock more aspects for you. Mainly, this is a way for you to get more likes, like knowing what the fashion trends are for that day and having eye contact. There are some that do help you out when taking pictures, like raising how many you can take or getting an easy way to get eye contact. I did find two of these upgrades iffy, like getting an interesting enough background is a bit hard and there is a camera upgrade for when you’re close but I couldn’t tell if there was a difference. Aside from this, I did wish the characters had a few different outfits so they’re not wearing the same thing for a week.
Verdict
For what it is, this is a good, short game to play if you have an hour to kill. I suppose as a photography game it may be fun, tho it lacks real challenge in it. I was getting 1000 likes right off the bat without much effort. The visual novel aspect is very weak, there's not much in it at all. The character's individual stories aren't very compelling and I played through mostly for achievement completion, not by any drive to see the character stories play out. It may be fun for less than three euros for the picture section though.
Such a nice little game that makes you feel good for an hourt or so, even characters are surprisingly fun. IT's a shame though it doesn't seem to have New Game+. Sad to see that there are less than 10 reviews on Steam by the time I'm reviewing it.
A beautifully designed game, but sadly very short. In my opinion, Tokyo Snap's best feature is its art style, and it is very visually pleasing! There's one main problem with the game though, and it's that it is very short, and so the replayabilty is not very good. I would love it if the developers added more content or DLC to the game, but other than that, it's a very beautiful game. 7/10
great small game about 30 min to finish but very replayable and the camera works very well and it's simple to use. ^^ the art is very well done and the only problem i had was some AI got stuck on things. if at the end you take all the pictures for the day you get the story part in a way you can talk to each person you take pictures of and find out their story. it's good if you want a short replayable game with a cute story and art. i would hope they add maybe dlc or something so you can go to new places and meet new people cuz the concept of the game is super good. i wish it wasn't hidden in all the trash steam has but it was a gem to find and more people should get it. 10/10 ^^
This one has been sitting on my wishlist for some time, then some time more on my library. Today I played it and it's basically just what you see in the trailer and nothing more. Some basic features that would have made the game more enjoying: - More outfits for each character or more characters, it's just the same 6 people every day. - More interesting dialogues with each character. It would have been more interesting if you exchanged some simple dialogue with each character every time you took a picture, and then had the opportunity to have a longer more meaningful conversation. But dialogues where just "hi, I'm a self centered a$$hole, ok, bye!" or "I'm shy. bye."... So, even though it looks quite good, it's too short and there was potential for... a complete game I guess.
