Game: Tokyo Hosto Genre: Visual Novel Publisher/Developer: Baller Industries System: Steam (PC) Total Score: 21/100 Value Score: 2.1/10 • Story: 3/10 • Characters: 3/10 • GamePlay: 2/10 • Graphics: 3/10 • Sound: 3/10 • Music: 2/10 • Length: 2/10 • Replay Value: 2/10 • Player Value: 1/10 Pros +Multiple scenarios depending on what action you take or what dialogue you choose Cons -Horrible story -Horrible voice acting -Horribly designed characters -No graphic options and the game only opens up in a 800x600 resolution popup -Music is generic and doesnt play as much -Very short, takes about 20 to 25 minutes to beat -Kinetic visual novel under the guise of multiple paths however they all lead to the same result or give you a game over -No extra content -No auto mode or any other feature seen in any other VN
Review
In Tokyo Hosto, you aim to be the best host of ♥♥♥♥ Lau's host club. What attempts to be an interesting spin-off of a dating sim/comedic VN, comes off as an annoying slog through a series of two-steps-forward-one-step-back scenarios. Tokyo Hosto plays more like a flash game than a VN. There is no mouse support or traditional VN options whatsoever (save/load features, skip key, text speed/skip command/window or resolution/audio/video options are all absent). Restarting each segment after an unexpected failure gets really tedious, especially since fast-clicking Enter can accidentally re-choose the failed option. The poorly designed ending also failed to succeed in any comedic or sarcastic form.
Issues
In order to run the game through Steam, you will need to either start Steam in administrator mode, or go to the game's TokyoHosto.exe file > right click > Properties > Compatibility > check "Run this program as an administrator." If you do not want to use Steam's features, you can still run the game through the executable.
Score
I appreciate the attempt to make something new, but this game does not play like a VN. Even disregarding that fact, Tokyo Hosto has the potential to become something decent if more time and effort is invested into the script, UI and basic game options. Welll... what the hell is that ending... Anyhow.. back onto review. A very short VN choice maker game about 5-10 minute long. The whole game is about a guy that got no skill that had to become the no.1 host in a bar by making the right choice talking to girls(some time guys). The game allows infinite retry and just keep at it for a little bit and you will have no trouble at all reaching the end. Graphic is weird cartoonish but still ok. Sound and Music are actually quite nice and i like them. The conversation is voice narrated by actuall voice atress and it's quite well done. Don't quite have enough content is problem of this game really. If the developer was able to push this game further with more content maybe it will do better at reviews and sales. one more thing to note is.. the game have problem starting. you have to go to the installation folder and turn the administaor pemission on for this game so then it can actually run properly. 6/10.. not much to recommend about but if you already owns. spend 5 minutes to play it then forget.
I actually have more than 5 minutes in this game it's just for some reason, to play it, I have to use a launcher outside of Steam as there seams to be a broken communication there. So if you also have that problem, Just find the game on your computer and open it that way. It plays it just fine! Now that that's out of the way, this is a hilarious dumpster fire of a game. There are just some games that are so bad they are good and I genuinely believe this is one of them. I get everyone has different tastes but really, just go into this game not taking it seriously and the ending will send you over the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ top, howling with laughter. XD
Epicness!
DODGE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF GETTING A BLUE COLLAR JOB BY BECOMING A HOST CHARM GIRLS WITH INTELLIGENT QUESTIONS AND FLAWLESS CAR IMPERSONATIONS WITH ♥♥♥♥ LAU'S GAUIDANCE, YOU TOO CAN BECOME A TOKYO HOSTO MAYBE EVEN A ♥♥♥♥ YOURSELF THANKS, BALLER INDUSTRIES!
★★✯☆☆ This is a very short little VN game, I guess I had fun with this, It kept me playing even to the … “ending” … I am not quite well versed with VN games but I enjoyed this one and the fact that it didn’t have achievements was a selling point to me, as the games tend to have multiple outcomes all with their own achievements, making your achievements % drop quite badly, unless if you plan to play through every scenario. PS the game just took me half an hour to play through so who knows I might have gotten a rotten/quick ending, oh and the game is fully voiced in English. Anyways, would recommend for a quick little game to play to scratch that itch. 2.5/5.
This game is too short to justify a 5$/€ pricetagg The devs bugged the game on release so that only 1 out of 2 possible endings are available claimed to fix it 2015 but never did. The game actually made me laugh quite hard at stages.. but its simply no 5$ game. It never gets discounted.. it only was discounted 50% once in 2015.. so nope If in theory it was 90% off I'd recommend it. Playtime: ~15 minutes a run, i did 3 in 35 minutes (to try out all possibilities + see wether the 2nd ending that is supposed to rotate was working, it wasnt) I got it in a bundle.. it was well worth a laugh
Don't bother with this trash.
